Audio sync issue
« on: March 11, 2015, 03:25:59 pm »

Hi all, I'm using chrome to watch Netflix with audio going through jriver but sound is behind video by about quarter of a second. Could anyone help me sort this please? Setup is windows 7 and Arcam irdac connected via usb. JRiver audio device is set to Arcam DAC asio and control panel/sound is set to jriver wdm.

Thanks...

how much buffering are you using ( from JRiver to your DAC)?

Not sure how to check that Ken. I've not changed any settings for that. Newbie here

Check the settings in options-->audio--> device settings-->buffering and the settings in options-->audio-->Advanced-->live playback latency.

Try setting both of those to a lower value (ideally to the lowest value that doesn't result in crackling or drop outs).

It says buffer is 50ms (Recomended). What should I set it to and why would this cause sync problems?

I'm baffled.  How are you possibly working on fixing audio sync and this at the same time?

In any case, don't worry about audio sync and messing with the buffers right now until you get your audio driver and device situation sorted out.

Which of the two settings I suggested you look at is set to 50ms?  I suggested looking at two different settings.

As noted above, try setting it to a lower setting to see if that helps.  I cannot recommend a specific setting as every audio device works a little differently.  Try lowering it, and see.

As for why a buffer setting might cause sync problems, a buffer effectively adds a delay to audio to ensure that audio playback isn't interrupted by sudden shortfalls in the data stream.  Some buffering is necessary, but if you have too large of a buffer it will affect a/v sync with external sources because JRiver has no way of knowing how fast external video (e.g. in Chrome) is playing.  So the solution is to use the smallest buffers you can use without causing problems (too small buffers will cause crackling, sizzling, or drop outs).

In any case, don't worry about audio sync and messing with the buffers right now until you get your audio driver and device situation sorted out.

Glynor is, as usual, quite right.  Get your basic output settings sorted, and then worry about the buffers.

Thanks for the help so far. Buffer settings are: device settings 50ms and live playback latency also 50ms. Should I change them both by the same amount or maybe just change one and see how it is? Not sure what the difference is between the two is..

DAC is Arcam irDAc using Arcam's asio driver and set to asio in Audio device

Ok, had a good play with buffers. Set device to 5ms and live playback to 500ms. Have I got that the right way round? Doesn't seem to help much...

think so I would set up a separate zone for video. Try 50ms on the device and 10ms on the live latency. Up the live latency if their is popping. BTW, 500ms is huge. In the big WDM thread there are links to a BBC video to help with the video sync.

Just my 2 cents, but as Glynor said, sort out your device and drivers first or you'll be doing this all over again. This is fine tuning stuff.

oops see that you did sort it out good job  :)

Could someone explain how adjusting the two different buffers works please. I'm just guessing at the moment...

Arindelle, zones are a new one on me! How would I go about setting that up?

Just tried those settings. Makes it worse. Audio is about 1 second behind now. I've not a clue what I'm doing! Any other settings that could help?

The wiki has a topic on Zones.

Ok had a look at wiki on zones. How will using a different zone cure this sync issue?

I don't think Zones will help with this sync issue.

I would suggest setting the live playback latency to the minimum, and your playback device's buffer size (Tools → Options → Audio → Audio Device → Device Settings) to the minimum value as well.
Be warned that many devices do not like the "minimum" buffer size, so I would gradually increase the device's buffer size until audio plays normally.

Hopefully at the smallest size which works, rather than playing corrupted audio, you will have audio in sync.
Or better yet, hopefully audio will appear before the video, since that means you can then increase the buffer size.

If the smallest buffer sizes you can use still result in the audio being delayed behind the video, I'm not sure that there is much else you can do.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. So that I inderstand how this works...setting the device buffer to minimum will make the audio play earlier, correct? and setting the live playback latency to minimum will do the same?

Correct. The smaller the buffer is, the lower the latency (delay) will be.
Most displays have some amount of delay in them, so the audio latency does not have to be zero, it just has to be lower than the display.

If you are playing video natively inside MC, this is not a big problem, because MC can simply delay the video.
But with Netflix being a separate app, there's no way for MC to delay the video in it - and I don't think Netflix have that option themselves.

I've put both setting on minimum but the audio is still slightly behind. Anything else I can do?

Unfortunately, probably not unless there is an option in Netflix itself to adjust the audio sync.

The only other things I could suggest would be trying different output types rather than WASAPI, and check to see if your device driver has latency options.

I'm using asio driver from Arcam and using asio in jriver device setting.  I find it hard to believe this can't be sorted out. The laptop I'm using is pretty good. It's going to the tv via vga. The tv is an LG which is about 3 years old. Are there any settings I can tweak for that?

Any other advice?

Have you tried WASAPI or DirectSound?  Just to test.
