Raspberry P1 as network media player?
« on: March 26, 2015, 02:42:25 am »

Hi guys, just spent a good while reading various threads in and around this subject, and have gotten myself throughly confused. Not hard. some who know me would say.

I'm keen to extend my usage of MC out into a user friendly media network player, SONOS like, environment. I've got plenty up and running now, server, a couple of HTPCs, DLNA media players, and JRemote on an ipad, playing via bluetooth speakers in a couple of rooms. But what i'd really like is headless network media players, that I can control remotely. I could of course buy a couple of JRiver Id's, but $395 a unit is not affordable for me at the mo.......

But I do have an old, currently unused Raspberry P1, sitting in a drawer that I've never really been able to do much with. Loved the concept, never really got to grips with the techie stuff. Anyhow, it seems from what I've been reading that various people have made progress getting MC to run on and, in conjunction with Raspberrys.

Is it possible now, or likely in the near future, that there will be a easy to install build for a P1 to allow it to work as a network media player, audio only?

Cheers, Paul

Probably not soon.  It also probably won't run on the original rPi.

The Id Classic is $295, not $395.

On a budget, an old laptop should work.  You could use it with Wake on Lan (topic on the wiki).

Shame. A bit of a long shot, but worth the ask.

Would that be running Linux on an old laptop or Win?

Why not make it a DLNA device or even an AirPlay device?
A quick Google on DLNA or AirPlay will turn up various ways to do this on a Pi.
Then setup a zone to send the music to that device.
For AirPlay you would need additional software loaded, but that is documented in the forums and works well.
I have a number of Pi's that get used for various media streaming projects.
