I am able to play TV channels on an MC client that come from a server with a TV tuner, but attempting to play a radio channel produces an error message:

Something went wrong with playback.
Details: Unable to open or parse file.

The TV status on the server at the point that the error message is produced is Idle.

Are you able to play the radio channel on the server?

Yes, and it can even be invoked from the client by sending it to a server zone.

I'll mention it in case it's relevant. i've edited some tags on the library entries for the radio channels, to give them thumbnails, friendly names, and a media sub type of Radio. Media type is still TV and Type is still tvlb. Are there any tags that might make a difference to streaming to a client?

Try saving it as a playlist and then playing the playlist.

Play the stream.
In Playing Now, right click and save it.

Try saving it as a playlist and then playing the playlist.

Play the stream.
In Playing Now, right click and save it.

No, this doesn't work I'm afraid, I get the same error.

1. On the server, started playback of the radio channel.
2. Went to Playing Now, right-clicked on the radio channel in the list and created a new playlist.
3. Verified that the new playlist exists and contained that one item.
4. On the client, reloaded MC.
5. Went to Playlists (in Theater View), long-pressed on the playlist icon (on a tablet - same as right-click) without drilling down into the playlist and selected Play from the pop-up menu.
6. The cover art of the channel is displayed together with a message "Opening..." at the bottom.
7. After about 10 seconds, the error message is displayed.

Are you using MC on the client?

Does the playlist work on the server?

Yes, I used MC on the client, and radio channel does work from the playlist on the server.

Also, I've noticed that when I try to start playback on the client (while it says Opening), a folder is created in the videos folder on the server relating to the channel and the status of the TV tuner becomes active. But when the error message appears, the folder is deleted and the tuner goes idle.

Im away early tomorrow morning for the weekend and have now turned everything off but will get back to this onSunday and create the logs.

Do you have a tuner on the client?

No, although I've noticed in the Status dialog on the client that the two cameras on the tablet (front and rear) are listed as devices. I've not set anything up with regard to that and TV options in general on the client, it's basically a clean install of MC to be used purely as a remote to the server.

Thanks for the logs.  It appears to be a case of client not handling audio-only situation correctly.  I will need to dig deeper to figure out.

What if you record a radio channel, using jtv format, and then, after recording finishes, try to play it on the client?  Will you get the same error?  If you are not able to play such recordings on a client, please email me a short one (zip up the entire folder of files).

Ok, will do.

In the meantime, I'm having another thought. I don't know if you remember but I was having similar issues a few weeks ago when I first got the Tv tuner and was playing around with it, but couldn't really reproduce the problem after reporting it and then reported no further problems. For one thing, this was on a different PC as a client, so I can try that one again. Secondly, It could well have been the case that I was getting the error on radio channels only but hadn't clocked that, so again I'll see if I can reprodcue it on that other PC.

No, this actually works. I can play the recorded file from the Recordings list on the client with no problem

I can also reproduce the error on two other clients, i.e. playing a TV channel works, playing a radio channel doesn't, playing the recording of a radio channel works.

Thinking about the fact that I have tagged all my radio channels (I had to change the Media Type to Audio first to allow cover art, then I changed it back to TV), I have checked using the Tag pane which tags are different, between one of my radio channels and a TV channel that works. The tags that are shown as [Varies] are:

Date First Rated
Date Imported
Filename
Filename (name)
Image Height
Image Width
Keywords
Last Played
Last Skipped
Media Sub Type (I have set the radio ones to Radio, the TV ones are blank)
Name
Number Plays
Original Title
Rating
Skip Count
TV Channel
TV XMLTV ID

Most of those are inconsequential I guess.  I've now tried blanking out the Media Sub Type again but I still get the error (after killing off and restarting the MC server and reloading the client, just to make sure).

That is a little puzzling.

Anyway, please try this patch:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6hbn9upzxy53mok/MJTSFileReader.zip?dl=0https://www.dropbox.com/s/6hbn9upzxy53mok/MJTSFileReader.zip?dl=0

Download, unzip, and copy the file to [MC installation]\TV\ subfolder.

Yes, that's worked, thank you!  I didn't know whether you meant to install on client or server but I did it on both anyway.

I forgot to mention, it was meant to be installed on the client, but putting them on both is fine.

I am glad it works.  Another problem solved!

Is that fix included in build 108 or do I need to save and restore that file?

No, it is not in 108.  It will be in the next build.
