NEW: Revealer Feature
« on: May 12, 2015, 07:16:57 am »

The latest build of Pono (20.0.100) adds a new feature called "The Revealer".  It lets you change resolution of a test file on-the-fly so you can compare the quality.

You need updated firmware to see the feature on your device.

You need about 1 GB of free space on the device before you start.

The process involves downloading a file and letting PMW convert it.  This takes a little time to do.

Results will depend partly on the quality of the equipment you're playing through.

Hi.

Looks like the "Revealer" downsample each track: if a track is, for instance, 192k, the highest resolution available in the revealer will be 96k.

Is that correct??

thanks

No.  It should provide several resolutions, starting with the original.

Looks like there is a bug then.  The demo Neil Young track shows all resolutions, but the 192kHz track that I made for the revealer myself only shows the 96kHz and lower resolutions on the Pono.

exactly.

I tried with different starting sampling rates, and the revealer starts always with the frequency immediately lower than the original. hope this helps.

Worked fine for me (Windows 8.1). Got 192 flac, 96 flac, 44.1 flac, mp3 and m4a.

I found the problem.

I have my library in iTunes, stored in Apple Lossless.

When Pono Music World creates the down sampled versions the 9600 and 44.1 lossless are stored as flacs.  But, the Original 19200 was copied over as an m4a.  The Pono player doesn't seem to see it.

There are two fixes.  Pono Music World could convert the original to flac, or the Pono player could be fixed to recognize Apple Lossless for the original.

BTW, I have PMW set to convert to flac when it copies to the Pono, but obviously the revealer creator does it's own thing.

Since the inception. Given it takes a second to determine its unavailability since the release and is still in that state, this is yet another example of sloppy, careless management. I do not delight in finding fault. It is fair comment. And the incidents continue with various facets of the software.

I don't understand what you're saying.  It's a web page that is unavailable.  It has nothing to do with PMW.

Agreed! If my comment is misunderstood, I am referring to the repetitions of bugs, explanations for, purported fixes, eventual fixes (thank goodness) and recently pages referred to that are missing, have been missing since Revealer released and remains missing. I am referring to the big picture that connects the software (firmware/PMW and the support). How is it that the tutorial page referred to for support remains unavailable.

I am focusing on what is AND not what isn't. And isn't the Revealer used in connection with PMW and the Pono Player? Would not the tutorial be useful when available? What is the reason for its continued unavailability?

Best,
Richard

I agree that the page should be there, but it isn't a problem with the software (PMW, the device, the player on the device, or the firmware of the device).   It's a web hosting error.

I reported the missing page.

Thank you! I am not holding you accountable in anyway. Merely responding to the poster before me. The day of the "returned" update to 20.0.100 (round 2), I noticed that the support page was missing, and gathered it would be published soon thereafter. That was about 2 weeks ago. Merely calling attention to Pono Music's failure to follow-through.

No intention to find fault with JRMedia Center and/or PMW.

Richard
