Cannot play .m4p files, what did I miss?
« on: May 18, 2015, 03:28:56 pm »

What am I missing?

The problem is it seems,
1.  That I have No .mp4 capability, My computer is authorized to play my protected songs
but will not show, nor play in MC.

2. I can see the .mp4 songs on my system however, If I go into MC's
side menu - Audio/Files/music location, any file with .m4p extension isn't even listed. (no show, no go).

3. In options/Library & Folders/Auto Import, I have "iTunes Protected Audio (m4p, m4b) checked as an option.
but even toggling this option does nothing.

4. Also ISO doesn't play, unlike win version of MC.

What am I missing.

Thanks in advance family.

P.S.
I have already deleted MC and preferences
as well as rebuilt my library.  If there is anything that I should repeat I'm open to do it
If it has resolved for someone else.  Thanks!

If you try an Internet search about m4p, you'll find that they are protected files.  You can play them from MC if you tell MC to use Quicktime to play them (set this under File Types in MC's options).

Apple offers a  program to exchange the files for unprotected versions.

Hey JimH,

Thanks for the quick reply.
I know the m4p's are protected files, I identified it in my question to get help.
Also, where is the File Type option other than where I stated in (3.) of the question?
I'm not seeing QuickTime playback. thanks for the help and the specifics.
This has never been a problem on the PC side, though I'm aware this is a different OS.

[Didn't know about the file Apple's exchange program, good tip].

If you have quick time player in your mac (application folder), when you open File/Open Media File in MC you will find your mp4 files are placed in a column under Quick time player.
so when you click your mp4 music file it will be played by quick time player instead of MC
This is what happened in my new mac mini with OSX 10.10

Thanks lok,
I gave your advice a test on 2 systems (10.7 & 10.10). It looks like no luck for me.
I've decided to let this go for the time being and will pay apple to convert the files.

I found a free way to do this Automatically with Google Music, however there are some limitations in regards to quality and availability.
Once I make the time to do 'the fix' I will share the whole process in a new post.
For the other missing features I'll just wait, as well as use my PC Server.

Thanks for taking the time lok to help me/us out.
