Video Thumbnails
« on: September 13, 2003, 05:57:54 am »

I have seen the ability to pause a video, and use that frame as your thumbnail preview. A friend showed me how to do it. We have slightly different versions of 9.1
I cannot do this, but he can. Is there a way I can turn it on?
How come it was removed? I thought it was a great little feature.

Thanks.

For reference my version is 9.1.222

Please try updating before you go on.  A lot of bugs have been fixed since then, and many items have moved around.

I've got the latest version and would be grateful if you could explain how to do it.

Thanks

Pause video, right click on video display, select use screengrab for thumbnail...easy as that.  Depending on the video type and the codec you are using sometimes the grab is not the exact frame you paused on...

Thanks NoCode UK. :D  That does the trick!

Now, can I ask you how thumbnails work for videos which are on CD?

I've noticed that under Advanced>CD 's & DVD my mpg and avi files sometimes have a thumbnail associated with them, but mostly, only the MC icon thumbnail shows.

I can't seem to establish why sometimes I get a thumbnail and sometimes I don't.

Any ideas?

I now have 9.1.251, and the option still isn't there!!
I can't work out why. Is there an option I need to turn on? I'm lost :)
I have tried it on avi's, mpg's. Neither work.
I am pausing the video that is playing, right click and that option is not there.
Rather strange.  ?

Same here.  No "screengrab for thumbnail" on my right click.

I'm doing a pause/right click in 9.1.251 playing an mpg file and there is an option for screen grab.

Are you guys right clicking the video display [this gives the option] and not the file entry in the library[this doesn't]?

The option you want is meant to appear below Aspect Ratios.

How strange - sorry I don't have a clue why it isn't appearing for you.  :-[

Good Luck

Sean,
Try doing a full uninstall and re-install of Media Center. Just dont forget to backup your library first :D

JimH,
I've noticed that you (well, I) can screen-grab with AVI's and MPG's but not with MOV's. Is this a limitation of your implementation of the quicktime decoder or an actual bug.

Cheers,

Scott.

Nope... That didn't work for me.  I uninstalled (complete) version 9.1.251.  And installed 9.1.252.
This is very strange.  :-/

This option is only available on Windows XP. The frame grab function we use is not reliable on older windows versions.

Well that certainly explains a lot  ;D

However, I still can't do frame-grabs on quicktime files. Just wondering if this is a limitation or a bug.

That's a limitation in MC. It's something we may be able to address in a future version.

I don't understand why it's not working on Window2000.
Why have differences on any of the MC functions between Windows platforms?

So us WInXP guys should suffer because older versions of Windows aren't "good enough" for relialbe use of this function?

Should JRiver support Windows3.11 as well?

Yeah it sucks that win2k users can't use this handy feature, but it's not a case of MC going "Oh, you're not using XP? Well then you can't grab a frame."
From my limited knowledge in the area, XP uses a new version of the windows GDI (the thing that 'controls' your computer's display hardware) and so maybe the screen grabbing routines that MC calls are something that XP's GDI supports and not W2K or below.

Hopefully that (kinda) clears things up for you, Cindy.

It certainly is something that JRiver should look at addressing though, as a friend of mine said he would purchase MC if it could grab frames on his computer, as he uses it primarily for video. Maybe come version 10? Who knows.

And as the function doesn't work on non-XP OSs (already explained by JohnT in a previous post), I assumed you were asking why does it exist in XP then.

Thanks Scott for clearing that up.

I have two machines a Window 2000 and an XP.  I just wanted to know why some things are different between the two.

I use a lot of different software for graphic visualization and I have never run into differences between window platforms.  I love this tool and I would rather have it on one of my machines then none.  I just feel sorry for those customers that choose window 2000 that can't use this great feature.
