MC 20 Freezes when any transport functions are engaged
« on: May 27, 2015, 12:58:19 am »

System is built on new ASUS mini desktop computer, although somewhat lower end processor, boots fast and is reasonably snappy.  This thing is freezing like crazy and is unusable.  I have tried everything imaginable in the settings as well as uninstall and reinstall (MC 20).

System specs  below  and log is attached.  HELP!

More information please.

Version of MC.

Version of Windows.

What are you doing?

What happens?

A "freeze" may just be that Windows can't get MC to respond, but it may not mean MC is locked.  Let it run.

Turn off auto import and analysis.

Run a benchmark and post the results.  It's under the Help menu.

If your system is rebuilding thumbnails and analyzing audio, it will be slow and may appear to be frozen. You could try turning off these actions for the time to test.

That's a fair machine, not weak or strong.

Are your files local or on a NAS drive?

Media Center is MC 20.0.103
OS is Windows 8
Also using Behringer multi channel USB audio interface for additional music zones.
Turned off "Auto Import" (Tools > Options> Library & Folders) but could not find "analysis" option.

All thumbnails and media seemed to have completely imported previously.

I have tried opening a couple of different movie files, they open and start OK but when I try to fast forward MC20 freezes for what appears to be an indefinite period of time. I will let it freeze and leave it for a couple of hours and see what happens.

See benchmark results in previous post.

It may not help, but please try 20.0.108:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=97567.0

Try copying a file to the local drive to see if it behaves differently.

What file type(s) are the files?  Do they all behave the same way?

Upgraded to version 20.0.108

It is still doing the same thing.

All of the files "VOB" files (acquired an extensive collection from a friend).

I do not know much about the VOB format.  I see there are multiple VOB files ending with sequential numbers.

I will try playing an AVI file and see how that works.  Ultimately, I would like to utilize the library I already have.

All thumbnails and media seemed to have completely imported previously.

According to your Log package (and the System Info you posted in the first post), your Thumbnails are only 3% built.  This will cause pretty heavy CPU usage when you navigate through different views in Media Center, especially those showing lots of content all at once (Photos or Videos in thumbnails display mode).

You can force MC to rebuild thumbnails under Tools > Options > Tree & View > Thumbnails > Build missing thumbnails.

This will probably take a while, so it is best to run it overnight.  It shouldn't impact you except when opening a new view or trying to scroll to a "new" area of a view where it has to generate thumbs on the fly, however.

I'm confused about the Transport functions reference in your subject line.  A better description of the particulars of the issue might be helpful, for you to get more useful advice.

VOB files are raw files from DVD rips.  They are generally not useful without associated index files (IFO files).  More info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VOB

Each "set" of VOB files should be in their own folder, with an associated IFO file.

Usually it is best to rip DVDs to a container format, like MKV, MP4, or AVI.

Ok, yeah... That's a DVD rip.

Again, though... Please describe in more detail exactly when MC freezes.

Start movie, seems to start ok, then hit fast forward, Media Center locks up. I. can eventually get the dialog box to come up that allows me to shut down the program (or wait).  I can do an alt tab and get to other parts of the computer which are still functioning normally.  I am NOT at the computer right now so I don't have the opportunity to try an AVI file yet.  I would still like to figure out how to get the DVD rips to work correctly?

Okay, thanks.

When you hit Fast Forward, it is with the play control in Media Center?  Clicking and holding (where it "scrubs forward" like a VCR did in the old days)?

I'm not sure where the files are stored, but yes, that might be a valid test if they're on a slow USB disk or network drive.

I also noticed your Intel GPU driver is old.  The version you have is 10.18.10.3958.  The current version is 10.18.14.4170 (released March 2015).  This would also include the HD Audio driver.

Also, confirm which of these is actually connected and active:

Code: [Select]
    Behringer FCA610 WDM (driver 6.13.0.0)
    Intel(R) Display Audio (driver 6.16.0.3129)
Realtek High Definition Audio (driver 6.0.1.7058)

How is that set up in MC?  Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device is set to what?  And what is enabled/disabled under Device Settings?

You may want to check it using something other than the Behringer, assuming you're using that. Also worth making sure you have the latest firmware for the FCA610.  I saw they had two firmware revs on their website.

I think I am getting closer to the answer on this bad boy.  I moved a file over to the C drive and it played fine and I can navigate all around the movie time line with no issue.  The brand new Seagate external drive is where I have the movie collection (connected USB 3.0).  I am guessing there is either an issue with the USB driver or resource allocation to that drive.

Thumbnails: I think there is a large image collection and MC20 is perhaps acquiring the images required for the thumbnails in use (please advise).

Intel GPU driver:  The windows online driver update utility is not finding or identifying the driver you mentioned (says current driver is up to date).  I also did some searches and could not find it on the Intel site however; I did get some hits on some non-Intel sites (I usually avoid installing drivers not on the manufactures site.  Where did you see this driver? (glynor).

I think we are getting close.

Thank you for the fast and continuing responses.  I was skeptical about the support forum and have been pleasantly surprised.

Maybe someone else will remember.  I can't.  There is a known DVD problem over networks with Windows.  DVD Navigator?

Jim, I remember the same issue.  I think the issue is that DVD rips in .ifo/VOB format (or live playback of DVDs) rely on Microsoft's DVD Navigator which limits the amount of buffering in advance that JRiver can do and complicates seeking.  And this gets more complicated with slower drives, like network drives or (in this case) an external drive.

The easy way to test is to try playing a different kind of video file (a different format like .mkv, .mp4, etc.) to see if it works correctly. twb1000, if you only have .ifo video files, you can use MakeMKV to convert one to an .mkv for testing purposes, and then try and play it from the external drive, etc.

If that fixes the issue, you're running up against an unfortunate limitation of the file format you've stored your video in.  By contrast, if you still have the issue, then it's probably an issue with throughput from your external drive (possibly power management related, portable drives tend to spin down fast).

Well I could always invest in another drive however; this a brand new Seagate 3TB and connected locally with USB 3.0 and I think it should be fast enough.  I would like to use the video collection I have, one way or another.  I guess I could ghost the C drive onto a larger internal drive and move the movie collection onto it; that would not be my first choice.  The person I got the collection from is using Raspberry PIs as media players around his house and having zero playback issues (from a network drive). I realize this may be a windows specific issue (a big one, in my opinion).

Is there possibly a setting that will fix this?

Yes, it may be as simple as changing the power settings related to your drive, or it may be more complicated. If you try the diagnostic test I suggested, I can offer more specific suggestions.

But there's no point in replacing the drive or changing your configuration if the issue is related to windows DVD navigator, and the only way to test that is to try playing back video in a different format (just as a test).

FWIW, my experience has been that an "internal" network drive connected by ethernet will be significantly more reliable than a local external drive, but that's neither here nor there as your problem probably isn't bandwidth related, it's probably related to either windows DVD navigator, or your drive spinning down too fast (power management).

The windows online driver update utility is not finding or identifying the driver you mentioned

The Windows Update driver updater is useless except for bare-minimum functionality, and will never show the most up-to-date drivers for your GPU or other system components.

The only way to get the real drivers is from Intel.  Explained here:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Drivers

Updating drivers willy-nilly is never a good idea. However, the Intel GPU drivers are typically best obtained directly from Intel (except for on Laptops when you often need to go to the OEM: HP or Lenovo or whatever).

However... With the additional information, I don't suspect the GPU driver anymore.

I do, however, suspect the chipset drivers (or maybe Seagate firmware for that external drive), since it impacts USB3 usage.  External drives are... Troublesome, to say the least.

I would certainly try updating your Platform Drivers from Intel:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Drivers#Platform_Drivers

These contain a variety of drivers for the "motherboard and CPU components" of your system, which includes USB functionality. This would be, I'd guess, the best bet to fix the problem (assuming it isn't a problem with your particular drive, which is possible, but I'd guess less likely).

You may also want to try connecting the drive to a non-USB3 port on your computer.  This will make the drive transfer data slower, yes, but still not slower than an actual BD Optical drive would in most cases. If that fixes the issue, then it tells us it is some interaction between the USB3 chipset (or the drivers for it) on your computer and that drive.

USB3 chipsets are troublesome beasts.  I don't see any non-Intel USB3 chipsets listed in your System Report, which is good because those are particularly bad. If you do have USB3 ports you know to be non-Intel (often they'll be a different color from the rest, possibly red or yellow), though, avoid those like the plague.  One other note worth mentioning is that you should NOT install the USB3 eXtensible Host Controller drivers from Intel on that system. Those are for Windows 7 only, and they cause all sorts of trouble with Windows 8 and 8.1  More info here:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/usb3/sb/CS-033977.htm

If you did upgrade that system from Windows 7, that could possibly be your culprit (though it probably would have been detected as part of the upgrade).  If you upgraded and got a warning about that, and did nothing about it, come back and let me know.  Otherwise, don't worry about this, but don't go digging on Intel's site and download their USB3 driver.

The chipset driver, though, I'd bet is likely to help (and won't hurt). Do that first. Reboot, and test again. If it isn't solved, try it on a USB2 port.  Then, come back and report the results.

I'm sorry, but if you're using files from a friend, we can't help you.  I'm locking this thread now.
