Suddenly..... distorted and garbled playback
« on: September 22, 2003, 02:08:10 am »

This popped up yesterday, while still using build 254, but everything is working smoothly. I rip a CD, and then suddenly, everything that I play through MC sounds distorted. I verify that it's MC by trying MediaPlayer and it works fine. I then install the latest build, 256, and then it still happens.

Here's where it gets odd.... if I open the DSP, set the "Output Format" to 4 channels or 5.1 channels, it plays fine. I don't have a surround sound card, nor have I ever had to use these settings before. Does anyone have any ideas what caused this and what might fix it or prevent it from happening again?

I've added the system info hoping that it might help.

I have a problem with DSP also

depending on the settings the sound becomes distorted

been like that since day one in MC9 with this sound card\system.

so i just turned it off.

But that's just it, I never had it on, never had any of the DSP stuff on (although sometimes I'll tweak the EQ for a poor sounding track but isn't that what it's for?  ;)) but now I have to turn on the 4 channel or 5.1 channel outputs to get it to stop.

What kind of soundcard do you have? I'm running a SoundBlaster PCI128 (onboard) and up until I ripped a CD yesterday, I never had a problem out of MC9 having distorted sound output.

SB Audigy

not sure if it happens to files without being analyzed or not.

I haven't analyzed any of my tracks, never saw a need to do it. Do you think that I'll have to do that now? That's bizzaare, or am I misunderstanding what you said? ?

all i am saying for my problem not sure if it happens to files without being analyzed or not.

maybe, maybe not

I am not sure if it is the sound board or the program.

i do know SB had a problem with a driver and windows XP once and that also made the sound distorted.

I doubt it's the card because it just started yesterday, and it only does it in MC. I've got the most up-to-date drivers for the card.

Matt? JimH? Anyone? Any ideas?

This just happened to me for the first time ever in MC.  I know the file is OK and my Audigy2 has the latest drivers.  The whole think went totally garballed.  I closed MC and re-opened and all is fine - for now.

I've tried that, even went as far as shutting the computer off, all day while at work, came back, still happens. I then install the 257 build, still does it, but not as bad, so I'm back to turning on the DSP with the output set to 4 channels. That clears it up, but I just don't understand why is it doing this. It's never done it before, and I can't see turning on the DSP as a fix for it. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Sorry - false alarm.  It was a particular section of the file that was at fault.

Re: Suddenly..... getting frustrated
« Reply #10 on: September 22, 2003, 05:43:05 pm »

OK, now it's getting really interesting! Either that, or the DSP has gone south for the winter! Just tried to listen to a MP3 stream and didn't think anything about the DSP being on. I'm not used to having to have it on so MC plays correctly.... and I get this error:

Quote
There was an error starting playback.
Make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in playback options.
(double check the output mode, output device, and output bitdepth)

If I turn off the DSP that I need to have on so that my local MP3s play properly, then the stream plays properly. This is getting very frustrating having to turn on the DSP and then turn it off.

Is anyone on the JRiver staff looking into this seeing as how it's not just me that's having this issue?

No idea....

...but I just started getting this with 257, can't play any APE or WAVs (all I've got) and I don't use DSP.  Tried restarting, no go.  Happens with ASIO or DirectSound.

Definitely a showstopper.

Mike,
Do the files play at all?

Uninstall/reinstall?  Reboot?

....but garbled, lots of cut out, both ASIO and DS, digital or analog out from the RME.  I've rebooted but have not tried uninstall/install.  I'll try that now.

Mike,

Did you try turning it to the 4 or 5.1 channel output the way that I do?

Still no joy
« Reply #16 on: September 23, 2003, 01:33:44 pm »

Uninstalled, reinstalled, no luck.  Played for about 6 minutes, then just completely went silent even though the player still shows progress playing.

The only thing I've changed on this machine is that I downloaded the Windows Update XP Sept Security Rollup patch.

[Edit]:  No, I haven't tried any multi-channel stuff, only have 2-channel rigs set up right now.

Try changing the playback settings from wave out to direct sound or the other way around.

Could be a driver problem.

Jim,

I was set at direct sound, so I set it to wave out, and it went away!!! YEAH!!!! ;D

One other thing that I noticed when I was set to direct sound was if I stopped a track while playing, it hic-upped.

This is hard to believe....
« Reply #19 on: September 23, 2003, 05:22:13 pm »

...but I did a little testing tonight.  I'm reasonably sure my problem is hardware.  Seems that my second system is working solidly now for a few hours, it's using a different interconnect.  I switched out interconnects and with digital out, this one interconnect just is not working.  I guess one end has gone bad, I haven't put a meter on it yet, what are the chances?  I'm strictly in ASIO mode, no DSP so far.
