Win 8.0 System not waking to record
« on: June 19, 2015, 12:04:52 pm »

I am just beginning to use JRiver Media Center. I am having trouble getting the Media Center waking up to do scheduled recordings.

I have a multi-boot system with one partition with Windows 8.1 and Windows Media Center. A second partition runs Windows 8.0 with JRiver Media Center. The system has an ASUS mother board with a Ceton InfiniTV 4 PCIe cable card. Both Windows partitions are up to date with fixes and have the latest Ceton drivers. My client and server are in the same PC and partition.

My Win 8.1 system with WMC is working fine and wakes up consistently to record scheduled programs. No problems at all.

My Win 8.0 system (on the same PC as the Win 8.1 system) has a new copy of JRiver 20.0.115 installed. I have the TV set up to use the Ceton cable card and have run the automatic EPG grabber (Nice!) to populate the TV "Guide". I can watch TV and record TV fine. However, if I select a program to be recorded at a future time, and put the PC to sleep (S3), it never wakes up to do the recording.

Powercfg /waketimers never shows any timers being set by JRiver. The Windows Task Scheduler never shows any entries for Scheduled Start for JRiver. This is probably why it never wakes up. I have not found the log file to see what's happening. Perhaps I missed some setting in JRiver.

Any ideas as to where to look further?

Thanks for any pointers you can provide.

Welcome to the forum.  Try running Media Server on Windows start.  It's in the options for Startup.

Any particular reason you're running Windows 8.0 on a second partition? I highly recommend just running Windows 8.1, as does Microsoft. ;)

We do set wake timers.  Wake timer is set just before Windows goes into sleep.  That is why you do not normally see them using powercfg.

JimH brought up a very valid point.  Either Media Center itself, or Media Server must be running in order for TV recordings to take place.

Awesome Donkey, I used the Win 8.0 partition since it was available and did not have WMC or any other media center software installed. It runs with no problems, is officially supported by MS, Ceton, and JRiver, and so thought it would be a good test bed for JRiver. My default system is Win 8.1, but it has a lot of "stuff" installed on it already. I also have a Win 10 system available, but didn't want to get into the "unsupported" pre-release environment.

I will try starting the server with Windows start up and see if that fixes the issue. But if Windows doesn't start up at the appointed time, how could the Media Server awake from sleep? Doesn't JRiver MC support a "single seat" environment, where the client and server code run in the same partition/machine?

Yaobing, re: Wake timers. When I checked for them with powercfg, I had already put Windows to sleep after scheduling the recording and manually woken it up. I thought the timers would still be set.

Thanks for the pointers. Let's see if I can get this puppy to behave.

Starting the Media Server with Windows has solved the recording issue I was having. Thanks for all the help. :)
