Any Hurricane News?
« on: September 18, 2003, 10:01:34 am »

Is anybody getting wet out there?  Or bailing out their basement?

KingSparta says they're supposed to get 70 MPH winds in North Carolina.

The power was off here for 1 1\2 hours. (Fayetteville, N.C.) AKA: Andy Griffith Land

Battery backup lasted about 10 mins I need to get a bigger Battery backup system.

I used the time to rewire my system and tape up the 10,000 cables behind it.

Since I Have a Freezer with about $600 worth of meat in it I hope the power stays on.

I guess getting a generator may help thats about $600 so i guess it would pay for it's self in one storm.

I mean this in good humor, but do you honestly think anyone in the hurricane's path is going to be sitting at home online reading the Interact forum?  ::) ;D

That was really smart to install those pedals, too.

BTW there is more than 400,000+ Homes In N.C. And Another 905,000+ Homes In V.A. are now without power.

As Of Right Now 4:12pm EST

I hove a Power Transfer center about 1 mile from my house so i normaly do not lose power. and most of the lines are underground from there.

Don't want to appear zynic but why you don't use a wind generator instead? (Caution very High Voltage)
Serious, I wonder why your cable is still working. If I remember well your powerlines and all of your TV /phonelines are very often on the same poles.

Lucky ones, your'e lightyears ahead to CA. (I took a closer look to installations there in 2001) A storm like this would rip their entire infrastucture into the desert. Everything on poles except downtown.

Im in the UK, where we dont have real weather - we just get a bit warm or a bit wet. It doesnt stop us talking about it, though...

The first time I went to the States I couldnt believe there was a Weather Channel (still my favourite tv station ever). But you guys get real weather.

I remember sitting in Virginia Beach watching the dolphins and pelicans at sunset. Today I heard a guy on the radio in VB describing how he was clinging onto his hotel balcony - and worse to come. Ive seen the satellite images of Isabel (on weather.com of course :)). Im glad the worst that can happen to me tomorrow is I get a little bit warm or a little bit wet.

Good luck.

Glad you're OK.

I had a friend a long time ago whose family lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, and one time, when the parents were traveling, there was a hurricane was approaching.  Her 17-year-old brother heard about it and so he took the chance to back the parents car out of the garage and put his car in.

The hurricane knocked over a big old tree and it fell on the garage.

Here in Virginia Beach, Va just had power restored 36 hours after losing it yesterday morning. Luckily we suffered no major damage although many trees came down in the area along with roof shingles and siding being ripped off houses in our neighbourhood.

It seems some cities had it really bad - all we could do was watch the wind and rain lashing down for the best part of 20 hours and listen to the local radio station for updates. Makes you appreciate the internet, TV and all the other appliances even more.

Time to play around with Media Server some more now.
Hope everyone else is safe and Isabel free,

Steve

yes I do, Chicken, Fish, Ham, Shrimp, But Most of it is stake. we eat stake about 3 times a week. it is fast and easy to cook on the grill when we get home from work.

It's a big freezer (about 7 feet high)

Lots of power outages here in the DC metropolitan area (let's hear it for intact phone lines and laptop batteries!!) - but doesn't seem there's been devastating damage, just what high winds cause. Falling trees and limbs mean that the outages are rather random and sporadic (as opposed to a large area being out completely).

Hopefully the flooding which will come from the drainage into the Potomac and other rivers will be managable - since the TV's not an option (my power went to black last night around 10:30) I've not heard when the Potomac crest is anticipated. Alexandria waterfront and Georgetown will be at risk - sandbags have been the order of the day. And it's not like we haven't already had LOTS of rain - Potomac was already 3 times normal for this time of year.
