Media Server and WMA files
« on: September 05, 2003, 10:08:14 am »

Is it possible to share WMA file using Media Server? I can hear MP3 files, but I get an error if I try a WMA file.

I guess Media Center does not work with WMA files.

If so, a explicit error messege would be welcome. Now, I receive a undefined error which does not say anything to me.

Windows media works for me using media server

however when testing it

when the library downloaded the progressbar did not work correctly.

but everything worked fine

my media server is up at 24.88.229.197:80 right now using MC9.1.246

i have maybe 30 or so windows media files on it and about 13,500 mp3s

maybe you need to make sure you have the latest version of MC9.1.246 and windows media player.

both computers need to have the same version.

09/06/03 18:17:54 - streaming 7  D:/My Music/Ultimate Dance Party 1997/Ace Of Base - Ultimate Dance Party 1997 - 05 - Beautiful Life.wma

I noticed someone trying to connect, i highlighted the part above.  both computers need to have the same version. or it will not work

Oh. So I dont know where is the problem.

Both computer have WMP9, MC 9.1.246, and XP SP1. I am administrator in both machines (if it cares)

The server IP is 192.168.0.30:8079

The client is 192.168.0.1

As I said, I can reproduce MP3 files, but get an error with WMA. The error message says: "Windows Media Error: Unknown error (0xC00D001A)"

I am very interested in making this work.

Any idea?

Another WMA...

Listening to: 'Oye Como Ya' from 'Non Stop Millennium Dance Party' by 'Tito Puente Junior' on Media Center 9.1

I can see the flocked ceiling and the lights blinking and the ball with the little mirrors slowly twirling over the sweaty bodies dressed in white leisure suits.

should get you your true IP address

however i uess the router address will work if your streamiing from within the local network.

i would update windows media player to the latest if you have not done so.

OK. I found something.

The problem is with spanish characters. When I play a file in the client, a message appears in the server. It says I need to update the library or that some file is missing, and then appears a list of theorically missing files:

C:\Mi mĺsica\Album name\blabla.wma

The real path is:

C:\Mi música\Album name\blabla.wma

"Mi música" means "My music", and all my music is stored there.

I moved some files to another location, and then the files played well in the client. Songs with spanish characters dont play, though ("Mi niña", for instance).

As I said, these problem do not occur with MP3 files.

I will report it to the build thread.

PS: I have always though that all the world should speak the same language: SPANISH!!  ;D

Both computers are in the same network. So, my PC is called 192.168.0.30 in this part of the network.

I think.

I have noticed this problem before but when i Use Microsofts TCP control if you send "Non Standard" Chrs to the TCP Control as a file name it will not work. A Work around for my Lyrics Finder Program Was To Strip All Non Standard Chrs From It When Sending Files.

I am pretty sure this is not a problem with Media Server. You are using some proxy type thing that is messing up the characters (maybe something to fake the DNS for your IP address or something?). There's a message in the archives, probably within the last year, that describes this problem and how they fixed it.

My configuration is pretty simple. The network only has these 2 computers, with default configuration (Microsoft Network, workgroup, static IP, no proxy, no firewall, i think nothing wierd).

In the other hand, how do you explain it only happens with WMA files? Did you try to rename a file as "niña.wma" and tried to stream using Media Server? Did it work for you?

Yes, that's what I tried, and it worked fine. I'll do some more testing.

I also did some testing, and I have not found a solution or a clue. I can reproduce the problem using the same computer as server and client. I have two machines, and I can reproduce the problem in both machines. does not matter if OS is WXP Spanish or W2K English.

I've also tried to change local setting

I've search thru the forum, and I have not found the post you talk about. I've find three persons with the same problem and none of them found a solution.

It does not seems a comunication issue. ¡¡MP3 works!!

If you wish I do some test, just ask me to do so, I dont know what else try, and I am absoluty unable to streams WMA file with accents on it...

I had the same problem with that but only with Wma files encoded with wma V7.1, encoded with the new wma V9 there is no problem.

Can you do a test for me? Take a wma file with no international characters in the name, make sure it works, and then rename it with international characters and see if it still works.

Thanks,

No, it doesn't work. If its name contains accents (áééíóú), it does not stream. If I rename it, it streams. And viceversa.

The file was encoded with WMA V9, however, I dont think it matters, because the same issue appears if the international character is in the folder name...

Thank you very much. It works.

However, I just notice there are a similar problem while streaming cover arts...

The client does not see the thumbnails, and the media server says it can't find:
"C:\Mi m?sica\blabla\folder.jpg"...

The correct path should be:
"C:\Mi música\blabla\folder.jpg"
