This is probably a naive question, but is there any way of copying settings from MC20?

The reason I say is that I gave MC21 a try, but soon after reverted back to MC20 when my Stream Magic 6 couldn't find MC21 in its UPnP search.

Problem was resolved when I went back to MC20, where it quickly detects the server in Audiophile 24 bit DAC mode.

Perhaps I am bit premature with this?

Backup from MC20, restore in MC21.  Make sure you turn on Media Network in MC21 and turn it off in MC20.

Note that when doing a restore, you can choose to restore the Library data, the Settings, or both.  Look at the check boxes in the Restore dialog.

I have a master license and MC20 installed and working. Downloaded and installed MC21 and it failed to recognize my license. Did a restore and despite being told that the license had been successfully installed, MC21 showed as unregistered. Tried again; no luck. Reinstalled MC21 and now it says trial expired and despite having a copy of the MC21 license I can't get from the dialog box telling me the trial is expired to it recognizing the license I have in my download folder. Suggestions will be welcomed. Thanks.

On the dialog box saying "Trial Expired" there's a button that says something like "Restore" or "Restore License".  Click that button and it will ask for your license key.  That's the one that originally got mailed to you when you purchased it.  Cut and paste that code from your email into the box and it *should* license MC21 for you.

Good luck!

Thanks, that did it. Restored my library from a current backup of MC20 and life is good. All is as it should be.

Hi

I still use build 112 of 20 version because I have clicks problem in the latest builds. Do I need to install 21 over 20 or in separate folder or this problem has been fixed in 21 version?

How I can move all my settings and library from 20 to 21? Is it correct to use both versions with shared library at one time?

Thanks

MC 21 won't override MC 20 - they both can co-exist on the same system.

So do you need to uninstall the mc20 once u completed the installation of mc21?

as AwesomeD said already no you don't .... actually I recommend to the people I have helped install their systems with MC that on a version change they do NOT uninstall right away ... at least until the next version is up and running correctly.

what I do

1) make a back up of the prior versions library and name it specifically (like justb421 or something); if wierd crap happens you can do a clean install of the next version and use that file to restore directly. If the user plans to reorganize their hard disks or filepaths do it BEFORE they upgrade or after .. NOT in between (eg. uninstall version 20; change to a new NAS or move your file structure) then do a clean install of 21 is going to pose a bunch of problems ... usually solvable, but complicated when it doesn't have to be. Just saying as someone recently did this and was not a hapy camper

2) go to options in the prior version (20) and make sure the any options to run JRiver on boot (either the main program or just media server) are set to none

3) remove any shortcuts (like in the task bar or starup scripts that would launch the prior version by mistake)

4) install version 21 and ervything will be (should be^^) ported over automatically no sweat, no restores, no re-config. Set up windows boot options if you use them and/or any shortcuts if needed and get your licence sorted

So IMO, then, and not until everything is copacetic, you can remove the prior version - (there can be some issues with uninstalling, if so reinstall prior version and then uninstall .. this happens to me as I always keep 2 versions to help others who don't make the jump, so I might have three versions on my machine at one time ... this won't affect most people.)

of course if you have the library backup file you can uninstall the prior version install the next and restore the library, but I find this is the most trouble free way of going about this.  This also permits you to go back and use version 20 if initial releases are not as stable as you'd like.

just my two cents of course. hope this helps  :)

I just upgraded my MC 20 license to MC 21 Master. I then downloaded and installed MC 21 for Mac.

  • How do I use the mjr-file (i.e. the license key I was sent) on a Mac? When I tried to install it (using the "Open with …" feature of OS X and selecting MC 21 to open it) MC 21 just prompted me to restore my license, which I did. I then received an email telling me this counted against my total number of restores. Why do I have to use up a restore when I have a non-expired (just minutes old) license key?
  • After installing MC 21, I noticed none of my settings, library, playlists, VST plugins etc. was retained. Is there a way of smoothly upgrading from one version of MC to the next, as with regular software?
  • Since all my settings etc. was lost I tried restoring from my latest MC 20 backup and found that most of my stuff was restored. However all the VST plugins I had installed under MC 20, together with their settings, was gone. How do I get them back?

*Most* of the time, running the MJR with Package Installer (which should be the default) will license it correctly.  Sometimes it runs with MC20 instead, which doesn't work.  The only totally reliable way I've found to license MC21 *every time* is to do a restore from MC21's prompts, as you have found.  Yes, this chews a restore.  But the JRiver guys are very good about resetting restores, as long as you have a good reason, which this seems to be.  If you get close to running out, you can post a thread here, with your reasons for running out, and they normally reset them.

As you seem to have found in the next point, restoring a backup is the way to go.  I think MC for Windows automatically does this for you somehow "under the covers".  With MC for Mac, you have to explicitly restore a backup.

Hmm, I've played with VST a little bit, but I'm not very well versed in how they are stored, etc.  I know that MC20 and MC21 can run on the same machine.  I wouldn't run both at the same time, but you can still open MC20 any time you want.  Can you view the relevant locations and settings of your VST plugins in MC20?  Then duplicate them in MC21 manually?  I don't know of an automatic way.  Maybe someone else has a better suggestion.

Good luck.

Aha, Package Installer seemed wrong for a license file, so I selected MC 21 instead  :-[

Of course I can, but I shouldn't have to. It's also a lot of work since I have several zones, each with their own settings. Thanks for trying to help, anyway  :)

Anyone know if there's a good reason for MC not to retain settings between versions ? I haven't done any programming since the early nineties, but I can't imagine it should be very hard to implement. I also can't think of any other software that throws away everything when upgrading. Even operating systems usually let the user retain settings etc. between versions.

I just found out I just had to re-install my VST plugins to regain my settings. Apparently VST plugin settings are restored when performing "Restore Library…", but not the plugins themselves. Weird behaviour … Why would I need my plugin settings but not my plugins? Anyhow, my problem seems to be solved now  :)

Backup from MC20, restore in MC21.  Make sure you turn on Media Network in MC21 and turn it off in MC20.

Could i get instructions on how to do this?
thanks

File > Library > Backup.

Media Network is under Options.

I restored again just now, because I wanted to link my license to my new email adress. Running the new MJR file with Package installer just got me an error message, but I found a way that works (the Linux method). Since I thought it might be of use to others I'm posting it here.

This works if you keep your Media Center 21.app in '/Applications':

Open a terminal, input the following command (substitute correct path to MJR file where appropriate) and press enter.

Code: [Select]
$ /Applications/Media\ Center\ 21.app/Contents/MacOS/Media\ Center\ 21 /RestoreFromFile /Path/To/MJR-file.mjr
