I have been using JRiver for audio for a few months now and tried watching a DVD for the first time and get this error:

Something went wrong with playback
Failed to connect video renderer with video decoder

I extracted the DVD to a folder on the NAS and did an import of the Video_TS folder into JRiver.
Double clicking on the imported library entry produces th error message.

I'm able to playback on a laptop connected to the same NAS but not on my NUC that uses a TV for a monitor. NUC is also connected to the NAS.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check your Audio settings under Tools>Options>Audio>DSP Studio>Output Format. Make sure the Sample Rates and Channels are setup as necessary according the NUC's capabilities. It sounds like you are outputting 2-channel stereo (TV Speakers).
Also check the Audio>Default Audio Device. I have had best results using WASAPI (but try Direct Sound too).

Do you have the same issue with video files that aren't DVD .ifo rips?  What if the DVD folder is on the local harddrive in your NUC?  I ask because .ifo rips are "special," and use microsoft's DVD decoder which has several limitations.  Specifically it can act unpredictably with .ifo files not present on local drives.  So to rule that out, try playing back the DVD from a local drive and/or playing a different video file format.

Also, are there any differences in how the NUC and laptop are connected to the NAS (i.e. do both have the NAS mapped as a drive?  Or UNC paths?  Or something else?)

The laptop and NUC have the NAS as a mapped drive in both cases.

I'll try running from a local file.
