While the Volume control at the bottom of the screen reacts to touch on my phone (Samsung G8), there is no change in volume on the system being controlled.  Any ideas???

Try the hardware volume keys.

While using the hardware buttons moves the on screen volume control, there is no impact on the actual volume.  Just to be clear, the music is not being played on/to, the phone but on a stereo system connected to a machine running JRiver, to which the phone is connected
This also is applicable to Gizmo on the same phone.

If you use MC on the machine, does volume work there?

There are several types of volume.  Click on the speaker icon in the upper left corner of MC to change them.

That was it.  Never knew that the icon was functional - just assumed it was informational.
