Getting media server to connect from work
« on: January 12, 2003, 08:07:37 am »

Loaded up MJ8 on my pc's at home and media server is working great.  Can download the library to every computer and play...

Logged into my pc at work and tried.  Won't connect.  I went into my Linksys router and set forwarding to the ip that the library sits on (192.168.1.103:80).  When I'm on my work pc, I tried to hit my roadrunner ip address (with port and 80 and without.  Nothing.

I was thinking that forwarding pointed pings to the internal ip address (192.168.1.103:80)..

My work has lots of security.  I was looking for a socks 4 (proxy) menu were I could put the information (that I use to get AIM to work for example) but couldn't find any special dialogue box.

Any ideas?

It's very possible that RoadRunner is blocking incoming connections.  Since most Terms of Service prevent hosting web servers, port 80 is a favorite to block.   You might want to try using an obscure port like 46558 and see if that helps.   If not, call RoadRunner and ask them if they're blocking ports before troubleshooting further.

The router isn't going to forward pings, only connection requests.  Actually, the router itself might not  even respond to pings.  There's a setting somewhere like "Respond to pings on wan interface?"  If it's unchecked, the router ignores ping requests from the network.   What happens when you ping the public IP address?

MJ uses the proxy settings from Internet Explorer.

On the forwarding page of the router, it allows me to pick an internal ip and then has another box for port service.  I put in 192.168.1.103 in the ip and then 46523 as the port.  When I tried to connect from outside, I put in 65.31.16.189:46523.  I bet I have the wrong syntax.

I guess I'm not sure what the setting should be.  On the mj side, do I ask for 65.31.16.189 or 65.31.16.189:46523?  Does the router now take that request and tranlate it to 192.168.1.103:80 which is where MJ at home is listening?  I think I have it set up wrong...

This isn't unusal for me by the way.  A year ago, one of your guys tried to help me.  Luckily the internal stuff works now...

"TTL expired in transit"  Yikes!!

That means a serious routing problem.  The default TTL for ping is 241 hops.  An expired message means that the ping went through 241 routers and gave up.

Try a tracert and see what happens.

I've got to run... I will try the tracert later...  I was just thinking that if I can see a web site (which is an ip) or use AIM, MJ should work from work...

With that as a premise, my head tells me I have the settings wrong.  I'd think anyone working inside a firewall would have the same issues getting to their home pc's.

Sounds like the setup is OK with one exception.  You have to change the network settings in the media server to be on port 46523 as well.

The correct syntax is 65.31.16.189:46523 on the MJ side (assuming you're on V8).  If you're on V9, the location in the library entry should be "m01p://65.31.16.189:46523"

I changed it to 65.31.16.189:46523 (the mj8 running at work - call it the remote) and I have the mj8 at home set at 192.168.1.103:80 (call it my mj8 server) while the router is set to forward 192.168.1.103:46523...

I also tried changing mj8 at home to be 192.168.1.103:46523 with everything else the same and it didn't work.

Can you grab the library from your location.  That would at least let me know wether the security at work is hosing me up...

No, I can't get to it.  Unless you told the router specifically to forward port 46523  to port 80, then the media server must also be set to 46523.

All right, the linksys is forwarding 192.168.1.103:46523 and mj8 is running the server on 192.168.1.103:46523.  Try 65.31.16.189:46523...

Do we care about he dns or default gateway stuff from roadrunner.  I was thinking that all we cared about was the ip they give me...

That's working now.   I don't have V8 installed anymore so I can't actually download the library but I can get the media server's error page.

Don't worry about dns or gateway.

I really appreciate the help by the way...

Anyway, so you are telling me that I am set up correctly now?  If that's the case, i wonder why my pc at work fails.

One thing that might be doing it is that I am connecting via the VPN using pc anywhere to take control of my work pc.  The routing problems could be that I am calling out from my home network via the vpn and then trying to come back through.  Tomorrow I will try actually sitting at my desk with no connectivity to my home network except the call for the library...

If that doesn't work, any suggestions givin that you can see it from the outside...

Again, thanks - when I see folks complaining in these forums, I try and let them know how hard you guys try to help.  The upgrade from 7 to 8 is really good.  I'm shutting down Musicmatch.  Is 9 that much better...

The VPN + pcAnywhere does complicate things quite a bit.  That combination CAN work but it's very much configuration dependent.   It looks like the home side is at least working as it should.

Just one satisfied customer trying to help another!

If you're happy with v8, stick with it for a while.  V9 does add some capabilities but it is also still in beta test.  Give it another month or two.

Got to work and couldn't connect... Ran the tracert on the home ip and it never got out of the bank I work for after 30 hops.

Anymore ideas...

Trying the traceroute from another machine might tell you whether the problem is specific to your PC or is related to network routing.

There could be so many issues at this point.   Firewalls, proxy servers, network problems, etc.   Without knowing more it's going to be hard to make useful suggestions and it probably wouldn't be a good idea for you to be describing your bank's network setup in public.

Try using your browser to get to the media server: "http://65.31.16.189:46523".  You won't be able to stream music this way, but at least you might make contact with the server.   Maybe changing back to port 80 will help you make it through proxy servers.
