"I'm aiming to organize my music library like a pro. Ideally, I'd like to sort by year, displaying each year followed by all the albums released in that year. And to make things even more nostalgic, I'd like to see the oldest albums first. Oh, and one more twist: I want to keep my beloved Grateful Dead collection separate from the rest. How can I pull this off?"

Off the top of my head... Under "Audio" on the left of screen, right click "Albums".... add library view.... give it a name... click OK.  Right click on the new view and select "customize view".  Add category "year".... move it to top of the list.  Press OK.  Albums by year should be in the top pane.  When you click on a year, you should get albums in the lower pane (for that year).  you can play around with the sorting from there.  You can create a separate library view for just the Dead.  Note your tracks need to be tagged correctly by year/album , etc. for this to work.

Under customize view,  if you click on Set Rules for File Display you can select what tracks you want to display - e.g. The Grateful Dead. Once you have done that, with the new View open click on its name at the top of the View and you can set a sort order and you can add text that appears under the thumbnail.

I forgot to add ... on the first step of customizing the view.... change the view from categories to "panes".  You can play around with other view types, but I think panes serves what you are looking for.

I posted this earlier but I wanted to clarify what I was looking for in my music library organization. a friend who is usually a great computer guru for me couldn't quite grasp what I was attempting to do, so here goes a second time.

I have a huge library of live Grateful Dead shows between 2 hard drives that I'd like to organize:

1) Organize by year in ascending order (oldest first)

2) Within each year, by show date, also in ascending order

3) Song selection within each show sequentially, so the entire show plays seamlessly

4) I also have a smaller library of other live performances that I'd like to organize by performer or group and by date.

Please try to keep in mind that I'm half computer literate. Would this be something that I'd need to organize on the hard drives themselves and then transfer to J River?

Hi.

I am not clear if you speaking about the file folder structure or a View. Assuming it is a View, as suggested a Panes view maybe what your after. Within, you can customize the content with many different options including filters, sort, etc. Right-click>Edit any column heading while in Panes and you will get an extend list of Category selection options. See screenshot.

First, sorting is based on field (tag) values in the MC database. It has nothing to do with how the files are organized on disk. You need to have appropriate fields fully populated to effectively sort.

Personally, I would recommend using Categories rather than Panes. Panes are very effective for those you like to do manual selections, whereas Categories allows you to simply browse a view to make your selection. You can try both.

You probably know some of this, but here is some detail on how to do sorting.

You need to create a View that has the appropriate sorting. To customize a view to have the right selection criteria (like Artist is Greatful Dead), right click on an existing view and then select Customize View. From there, choose Select Rules for File Display and add rules that select what should be viewed. In your case, Artist is Greatful Dead should be enough.  Add Categories (Field Names) as appropriate to the left hand column.

Once you have selected the view for viewing, go to the top of the view and there will be a small windows with the name of the view. Hover over that and select Sort Options and then Custom. Once in custom you can select the fields you want to sort by in either ascending or descending order. So, sort by Year (ascending), then add Show Date (ascending). A to Z means ascending even it is for numbers like years.

To set the text under each cover, again go to the window at the top of the view and select Thumbnail Text. You can add multiple lines with the appropriate field name. Those will be displayed under each cover.

You will probably have to experiment a little to get it to look like you want it to.
