thumbnail not displaying
« on: November 02, 2005, 01:17:06 pm »

im not sure how to fix this.

i have an album and its thumbnails are not showing up.  my view is:  media library\audio\artist album and i selected the view to be thumbnails.  i get the default MC logo for the track images.  i also switched the view to album thumbnail and also get the default MC logo image.

i looked in  the album art folder (docs and setting\user\app data\jriver\album art) and the image is there.  so i picked one track and selected image\quick find in file\cover art directroy.  nothing happens.  i also tried to get from internet... nothing happens.

under file properties it says the image is inside the file...yet dosent display.  if i remove the cover art for one track then do the quick find in file, it will then display the cover art properly.

the problem is i have 10000 tracks.  a lot of the art dosent exist in the folder... as its inside the file.  if i remove the cover art from those... its gone.

the only way i know how to get it there is to copy the clipboard and paste it back.  this creates a copy in the album art folder.  i had to paste about 2/3 of the album art from the internet.  the confusing part is that even some of those that were pasted from the internet did not make thier way into the album art directory.

it would be nearly impossible to to re-sort all the artwork this way.  is there a way to bacth copy the images/ remove the album art/ then quick fiund in file while putting the images into each file?

what confuses me is why some of this is one way and some the other way.  this is 100% my music that i personally ripped using MC10 (8000 tracks) and MC11 for the last 2000.  i havent even begun to look at the main library as i only planned to append these new tracks to that one.

This problem was reported by Sauzee, Chrissssl, and myself ,Joncat. That's three users of registered versions of MC11, remember us?

MC11.316 is causing a  behavior that removes random thumbnails and won't rebuild them. We have each observed it, and devised a workaround. Maybe there is something in common with our systems (I know mine is not oc'd and runs prime95 and memtest stable) that causes this

Take this one album, Reggae Sunsplash, I believe that the image has been added to the tag because I can delete the album file in the cover art directory and then the thumbnail still appears in Playing Now. Now maybe MC has some other database or something to track this so I don't know.

If it truly is tagged, then the thumbnail simply isn't shown when browsing panes and view schemes; library browser seems to work okay and seems to act like you are highlighting the album in a pane which is also the quivalent of playing now.

The result is that there are album thumbnails NOT VIEWABLE in pane view schemes, but are viewable only in Playing Now or Library Browser.

I have spent about three hours so far updating thumbs I already have, once it dawned on me that something didn't feel right.

FYI, same result if in Audio View Scheme.

WORKAROUND (just use the Spart plugins "re-direct" thumbnail link to folder option):

If you have blank thumbnails in any panes and your tree is let's say, Audio, right click and check to see if Image>Copy 1st file to clipboard is available. If it is it means there is cover art tagged on the file(s).

2. Use King Sparta's Move Cover Art plugin to copy all the  art of every file/album in your ibrary to folder.jpg or one Cover art folder; either works.

3. Select all files/albums and choose Remove Cover Art and obviously choose NOT to delete files from the hard disk.

4. Select everything again, and choose a Quick Search in File/Directory.

5. This should rebuild your thumbs permantently...I'm still not sure though...we'll see.

I tried to rebuild thmubs after the tagged art had been copied into the album folder and MC could not do that...I'd try the alpha but after reading the posts and the long run of MC11...I am not really up for alpha testing yet, so if anyone is using the alpha check to see if thumbs go missing and if they can be rebuilt correctly.

Three users is not a landslide.  Maybe it's an MC problem.  Maybe not.

If you want to see more attention on this, you'll need to document the problem so we can reproduce it.

Problem documentation:

Album art tagged to files or in one specific folder.

Album thumb disappears:

You can see it in Media Library view but not in panes view that have been switched from auto to album thumbnails.
It wouls also show up when using Search function, but simply would not be viewable in any pane mode of a view scheme.

Rebuild thumbs doesn't fix it.

My problem was with tagged files with no copy in a folder and some with as Chrisssssl said.

Files that are tagged with album art > have Sparta plug add folder.jpg to album folder and rebuild didn't work because I needed to tell MC (via Spart plugin) to point MC to the folder.jpg

I had been adding thumbs via the search function; pasting album art onto a blank album thumb. Could that have mis-directed something in oter "normal"  pane views besides the Search mode? What if tagging had been turned off? Maybe this could have happend while utilizing earlier builds of MC11 and it simply couldn't be fixed by rebuilding thumbs? I'm confident that MC won't lose any more thumbs, but what would happen if we relied only on the art in the tags. Anyone doing this and NOT having a problem?

Running Library server to my laptop at school yesterday and had some missing thumbnails in Pane view; just where they had vanished before I repaired at copied all tagged art to folder.jpg.

Funny thing is, the Tooltip popup shows the cover art and I could copy the "blank" image and then paste it into a jpg. editor and see it.

Again, no problems at home since retagging and repointing MC to folder.jpg but it would seem there is some underlying problem with thumbnail behavior in MC11.316

thanks
Jonathan

If you have 2 cd drives MC11.316 will rip the second cd without asking......I have EAC ripping at the same time as MC, when its done, MC rips the cd as well. I wish we could see this bug fixed.
