Stuttering with WAV file playback
« on: February 17, 2006, 03:27:39 am »

The pauses between WAV files when played via Media Server are gone (thank you) but I'm now getting "suttering" when the next file loads.  I turned off all virus scanning, disconnected both systems from the internet, and turned off the firewalls, but the problem persists.  It seems to correspond to a spike in CPU usage from "System" according to the task manager.

This happens whether or not I jump to a new location in the song, although jumping locations makes the stutters more prevalent.  If I just let the songs play, however, I still often get the stutters (although not "always.")  I watched the Library Server log page, and the stutters correspond to the requests (2 of them for each song) for the new song.

Also, I'm seeing 6 digit bitrates in the client's display for these songs.  This, once again, only happens when playing them via the Library Server.  The 6 digit bitrate values are different for every song, but they're consistant -- i.e. the same song displays the same, incorrect bitrate every time.

Thanks,

Larry

I wonder if this is due to slowliness in DirectShow graph building on your machine. What is your system spec.?

This is a bug. I have fixed it for the next build.

The client or the server?  The client is "decently" fast -- a 2.5Gig P4 with 1 Gig RAM.  The server is a little long-in-tooth these days -- a dual 1Gig P3, also with 1Gig RAM.  Would the "graph building" really cause stutters that correspond to the "file request" moments on the server?  I do notice that when I watch the Library Server log as the songs are playing (listenning to the client in the other room) the stutters happen when the "requests" show up in the LS log.  Does this jibe with the "graph building" theory?

Is there a way to test your theory?  Would turning off the "spectrum analyzer" prevent the issue you're thinking of?  I can tell you that a few builds ago (when the "gaps" between songs were still occuring with wav files over Media Server) I don't remember getting any stutters.  I believe the stutters started with the build that stopped the "gap" problem.

Thanks again,

Larry

How about trying APE?  The bandwidth usage would be about half and it might make a difference.

I meant the client. The server does not use DirectShow graphs. You client certainly is fast enough. I am now discounting my own theory. The gap could be explained by slowliness in graph building, the stutter actually can not.

Does the spike on CPU usage occur on server or client?
