Attempting file format conversion crashes MC 12
« on: February 22, 2007, 09:13:04 am »

I have MC 12 installed on two separate machines, both running XP Pro, both fully up-to-date and patched. One is a 2.* Ghz single Pentium chip, the other a Dual-core AMD machine. When I attempt to convert ape and flac files to MP3 format, MC 12 crashes, regardless of which machine I use. I've removed and reinstalled MC 12, but this didn't solve the problem.

I get a memory error on the AMD machine (something about memory being refernced but not there) but no such reference on the Intel platform. However, on both machines, the format conversion begins, gets about 1/4 of the way through (according to the filling bar) and then stops and the program crashes. Flac and Ape codecs are installed and apparently working (i.e. - playback is fine).

I'd appreciate some help here. If I can't convert formats, my iPod is worthless, so to speak.

Someone else reported a similar problem in the last few weeks (try a search).  I believe that the APE files were encoded with some other program.  If that's the case, try encoding with MC.

Problems with FLAC may just be related to the wrong version of the decoder.  See scthom's posts on the Third Party board here.

Re: encoders -

I have something over 100,000 files, virtually all .ape and .flac, a few mp4, and even fewer .shn. All playback just fine, and all were convertible (meaning the ones I  tried to convert) using MC 11. Since I've been using MC sincer Media jukebox 7, and all files have been successfully played at least once, I don't think the problem lies in encoding to flac and/or ape, particularly since it doesn't matter what format I try to convert to to mp3. The convertor freezes and the program crashes.

Maybe there's a problem with the MP3 convertors in MC!@?

This is happening on two separate machines in exactly the same way.

Were the APE files encoded with MC?

No, although I'm puzzled why this should be an issue. The same behavior happens with flac files. Also, I've never experienced problems before with MC 11. Why should this now be a problem.

I've never used MC (any version) to encode anything from CD or any other source except when I'm transferring to an iPod. I either use Monkey's Audio directly, or DBPowerampconvertor to encode to ape or Flac. . I only use MC to change into MP3 when I need that format (and thereby saving tag info.)
