Help with sorting photos - please?
« on: December 07, 2008, 06:39:32 am »

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here, but I can't figure out a way to keep my photos nicely in groups, and still have them sorted in a good order...

I have 'Group by' set to 'Album (by date)', so that within my Images view the photos are grouped nicely.  But these are always by reverse date order, and there doesn't seem to be a way to change this.  So if I want to run a slideshow of photos, then it will always run 'backwards', right? i.e. I will see photos from Nov 30, then Nov 29, then Nov 28 etc...  Within each group, I can sort either way - so either the slideshow would run correctly within each day, then 'jump' to the start of the previous day, or alternatively would run completely 'backwards'.

Not sure if I explained this so well, but if anyone knows what I mean and more importantly knows how to work around it, while keeping the useful grouping in place, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the reply Marko.  Unfortunately, that doesn't solve the issue of the groups themselves being listed 'backwards'.  There doesn't seem to be an option to sort Album (Date) in A-Z order, unless I'm missing something?

I made a new library field called "Date minus time" which consists of "[Year] [Month] [Day]".

I group by [Date] (z-a) and then sort inside groups with [Date minus time] (a-z). This gives me my most recent photos nicely grouped at the top of the list, and inside the groups I can see the photos in the order they were taken.

I think that jriver should make this a default view in photo views.

Indeed.
Back before we had full-on grouping, I created two new fields from the [date (filename friendly)] field and used those to list newest photos first, but sort each day by oldest first [Link].

Now we have groups, which have by and large replaced this sort order, though it does still come in handy here and there.

Another thing to think about is: If you want your files to be grouped in a particular fashion that is not present in the presets or fields list, it's always possible to create a new, purpose built calculated library field of your own and use that for grouping.
