HOWEVER, now 14 replaces special characters with "\", which it then interprets as a new subfolder.
I can verify this behavior. The AC/DC albums that I recently ripped are now stored as such:
My Music\AC\DC\1979 - Highway To Hell\AC_DC - Highway To Hell - 01 - Highway To Hell
I've got XP - MCE as my OS. To be clear, I ripped these albums and then used Rename, Copy & Move on them. A few older songs are stored under an AC_DC directory.
not sure if this helps but:
\ gives separate directory
/ does not
I'd previously noticed this rename behavior and assumed this was my issue. I tend to forget which slash is which if I'm not paying close attention. My slashes in the example above are exactly as they are in my library and file system.
One similarity between Jeff and my naming schemes that I notice is that we both include the field with the special character in a directory name and a file name (and only see the problem with the directory). I don't know why that would be related, but since Matt couldn't reproduce the problem I figure it's worth pointing out.
