Media Center 9.1.246 beta available
« on: September 05, 2003, 01:32:36 pm »

Please read carefully before downloading.

This is BETA software.  There are still some known (and unknown) bugs.

The latest known stable version of 9.1 beta is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter9_1.exe

The latest build of 9.1 beta is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter91246.exe

Please report only known problems in this thread.   If you want to discuss changes in the UI, please use another thread.

History:
1. Changed: Program Files directory is excluded from default search directories list.
2. Changed: System and Hidden files will no longer be imported.
3. Fixed: mini-me player would run extremely slow if comment or any other field were very long.
4. Fixed: After installation, MC was alway reverting back to default skins.
6. Changed: Several optimizations to increase overall performance.
7. Changed: Less flicker and better speed when changing views, focus, selection, etc.
8. Changed: "Play" and "Add to Playing Now" no longer get added as right-click MRU items. (since they're always at the top)
9. Fixed: "Play" command didn't work logically inside of Playing Now list controls.
10. Changed: If a file is missing, MC no longer rechecks to see if it's not missing until a restart or rename of the file.
11. Changed: MC only synchronizes library and tags after selecting different files (or closing MC) instead of after every change.
12. Changed: Updating panes much faster -- especially with very long lists.

Bug:
1. Only the PixOS MEGA-ME skin is recognized now...no other skins are supported/recognized (get 'unknown skin' if you try to re-download/install a skin...like Windows).

Just three things bother me now:

1.- Playing now file need more contrast in AW (PixOs).

2.- AW still flicks when clicking in the panes. Why?

3.- Right click in PN's AW should display just the "List". No more 'Show it as window'

Obviously, I dont forget you promised to add some buttons  ;D

Great job!

Just open main.xml in notepad and change the version from 2.0 to 3.0.  This won't work for older skins.

The mega skins are in this directory:

Esthetic bug - robs of space:
Lists in Action Window always reserve an empty space on the right for a scrollbar - although there's no scrollbar present (for shorter lists...).

Esthetic Bug:
Some icons of the "ListIcons.png" don't have transparency.

Don't know if this has worked before:
When listening to web radio, Playing Now's Track Info does not refresh when a new song starts. It's sticked to the page that is loaded when you start listening to the station.
So in Hairstyle / Windowed / Full Screen mode, it's quite hard to get the right info...

Annoying behavior:
No mute when buffering web content (awful stuttering while buffering).

Drawing bug:
Action Window tooltip for "Bios" flickers when there's much content in the bios field and the tooltip is drawn over the top border of MC.

Drawing bug:
Handle of vertical splitter is not centered always.

Problems:

  • MC9 is still trying to play DVD disc when I insert it.  I want to use my favorite DVD player.  Please give me an option to stop this.
  • I cannot resize MC9 window from left-upper corner.
  • MC9 smartlist wizard is slow.  "Add Rule" -> "Artists..." took about 14 seconds.

Internationalization Problems:

  • MC9 doesn't sort list of artists/title/etc. correctly.  Unicode is not sorted character set, so MC9 should sort a list of artists/title/etc. by using locale information.  Google by "Unicode locale sort" for more info.
  • Grouping of list doesn't work for non alphabet artists/titles/etc.

CD Burner not recognized - fixed
« Reply #11 on: September 05, 2003, 04:43:41 pm »

I fixed this by unmounting and re-detecting the CD burner. All is fine now.

Build 9.1.226 used to recognize all my drives correctly. The current build recognizes my CD burner as a CD-ROM only.

Windows XP recognizes the drive correctly as CD-RW as well.

This is kind of a drag, because I had gotten used to the CD burning functionality in 9.1.226, which worked perfectly for me...

If you go to Tools/Skin Manager, click mini-me tab, click a skin name in the list to go into "rename" mode, then click back to the mega-me tab, there's either a re-paint problem or it's retaining the rename mode on mini-me.

Bugs:
1. Every time I start MC, there's about a 10 to 15 seconds lockup of MC (can't click anywhere in MC).  I see in the Task Manager that it's not looping (taking CPU time)...nothing is (just System Idle process at 99%).  This all started with build 244 or so, I think.  Any clues what's going on?  Only 700 files in my library (4.5 GB).  It's like MC is 'paused' waiting for something to 'finish' and times out or something.

Update:
Just wondering:  Is MC maybe searching my current mapped hard drives for 'something' now?  If so, I normally have 2 or 3 mapped networked drives that are discounted/unavailable...and, thus, take a while to time out if you try to access them (typical Windows operation).

2. If you use <Alt-Enter> to display/hide File Prop Details (in AW), the focus is lost and you can't use the Tab key and/or arrow keys to move around (in Content view or anything).  Requires a mouse click to regain the focus so you can use the keyboard to navigate again.

3. When using the Tab key to navigate, you cannot get to the Content playlist (only the Org Tree and the Search box).  Quite annoying...seems like you should be able to tab to the Org Tree, Content's Search and Content's List (all three, at least).

One small request about GUI.

I want to use wheel while mouse cursor is on scroll bar.  ;)  MC9 is treating scroll bar area as the outside of tree/pane area.  In addition, I wish if you can leave "wheel focus" on last scrollable area until cursor is get in next scrollable area.  Thanks.

And thank you for the response, JimH.

OK a complete uninstall and reinstall fixed this and the other problem I reported in this thread.

I'm having trouble burning audio cd's to cdr and cdrw's.  At the end of the burn the little progress dialog just hangs after the last file has been burned, I never get the message "writing leadout" or whatever that last message usually is and dialog never closes, and the only available action is Cancel.  But, usually when I Cancel the dialog the disc is still playable.

Great optimisation work.  There's still a potential further improvement you could make as I've found out where some extra latency exists when loading view schemes.  See the 'Slow areas of 9.1 thread'

I know there has been debate on how to do this best. For me this current implementation is nice - it doesn't seem to be particularly "surprising" and seems simple to manage complex tagging.
Good one!

BUG: Drag'n'drop within the media library doesn't work.

Go to Media library -> Audio -> Hard Disk Location
Select one Album (direcotory) drag it to a sub folder and drop it. It will generate two popup's:

"Error setting some file properties: Location (root)" and
"This operation can not be completed because the desired action is ambiguous or not possible"

Request for skinning
It would be nice if there was a way to define the text color of the "active link" for the AW browser symbols. It's now fixed to #0000FF...

BTW... are there any more goodies in MEGA-ME 3.0 aside from seperate colors for splitters and "PositionSliderFront"? Would be interesting ;)

OK a complete uninstall and reinstall fixed this and the other problem I reported in this thread.

I am also seeing another problem when burning audio cdr's/cdrw's which has been happening with the last few betas OR since I installed a new Pioneer A06 DVD burner.  This could be related to the other problem I posted in this thread

A cd audio burn results in:
1st track: ~5 seconds of buzzing or some other song, then the song starts playing normally
2nd track: ~5 seconds of the end of 1st track, some silence, then 2nd song starts playing normally
3rd track: similar to 2nd track
etc

This is with (burn) dsp normalize on with no other dsp options enabled, or (burn) dsp totally off.

The new tagging method can be a pain if you are mass tagging files in the playing now window or lists.  You make a change right click to get the menu for example to rename fils and MC starts tagging.  The right click menu is useless until it finishes but then focus returns to the app and it disappears anyway!!  In this respect the old method was better...the change happened staright away and you could then right click...now you need to do something to kick the tagging of...

MC does use locale specific sorting.  Is there a simple way we can reproduce the bug?

Reset to default sorting resets all libraries.  I just realised this to my horror when resetting one of my libraries I lost all my sorting set up in the main library...surely this should only affect the current library?

Sorting and other view info is user specific (registry) -- not library specific.  Right or wrong, it won't change in 9.1.  Sorry for any hassles.

Drawing bug:
When switching between view schemes, panes with short lists don't show a scrollbar. Making MC smaler until the horizontal splitter meets the end of the short list brings back the scrollbar. It then stays when making MC bigger again. After switching to another view scheme and then back to the one with the short list, the scrollbar is missing again...

Saving Views for all Locations in the Audio part of the Media Library doesn't work.

Tracks imported/ripped only appear in some of the Media Library locations  - I get them in Artist/Album but not in the top Audio part of the tree.

Hi,

I just installed and tried MC 9.1 (I'm currently using 9.0), and so far, it looks like a nice improvement.

However, one thing I don't like is the location of the 'Action Window'. I have plenty of horizontal screen space, so I'd like the option of docking the Action Window on the right side of the MC window. Putting it below the navigation tree just seems cramped.

BTW, I know that you can also 'float' the Action Window, but I don't think that's a very useful solution.

Keep up the good work!

If you play one "My Stations" streaming-radio entry under Web Media, and you try to switch to another station by clicking the second station's link under "My Stations", the first station plays instead IF the second stream is not responding (instead of an error message being displayed).

For example, assume I have both "WOXY - [Alt. rock] [48k]" and "Radio Paradise - [Ecclectic Rock] [128k]" listed under "My Stations".  If I launch MC 9.1.246 and play WOXY (which is working fine as I write this), then try to switch to Radio Paradise (which is NOT responding right now), MC just plays WOXY instead.  It seems it should generate an error message instead.

If this behavior is by design ("not a BUG, a FEATURE" ;)), I apologize.

**************

However, under some circumstances (such as if you try clicking the non-responding stream repeatedly), MC will crash.  Sometimes it crashes in the familiar Windows way (i.e. with an error message), other times it just disappears.

This crash occurs for me reproducibly if I click a station entry while the "Waiting" status is displayed.

I tried it with Direct Sound, Wave Out and ASIO, it's always the same here (with MC 9.1.x) on three different machines. Only my old living room PC does a stutterless switching between different streams - I'm still running MJ 8 on this one... ;D
