BAD user review on CNET
« on: May 22, 2003, 02:09:36 pm »

Here is what one clueless user wrote on CNET/Download.com
which brings the user rating down to 78%

"The Borg of Music Players!"
Got the program to check it out. I didn't care for it that much, but since I have DFX for the program I thought I'd leave it on my pc. I unchecked all file associations, including cd. Even after doing that the program STILL opened and attempted to be the default player for my cds. I uninstalled the program, but it left its icon on my desktop even after the program was gone. Download this only if you want to give up control over your audio options. You WILL be assimlated!

I am sure that was something major he could not take care of. some users just don't know how to delete a desktop icon so don't be to hard on him

That user has as much right as anyone else to post a review, and to rate MC9 as he sees fit.

At least the user didn't harp on any of MC9's many actual bugs, right?

And BTW, MC9 *does* steal associations sometimes--it does it for me with MPL files, no matter how many times I uncheck the option.

A simple re-boot might have cured this.

You're absolutely right.

If we do, we don't mean to.  We'll check it.  Please report it in the thread that announces each build if you still find it there.

There does seem to be a disconnect between extensions one selects for association (within MC) and the reality of the situation, ie. extensions that MC "takes over". This is also true for a lot of programs. Another reason why the Windows file system should have full support for embedded metadata, but that's a geek tangent...

Relating to this, I would like to comment on the improvements in the installer. One of the advantages of a responsive dev team is that a user can see many builds in a relatively short period of time. This used to be a minor drawback with MJ8 because of some installer issues with exytension "hijacking". This has not been the case for me with MC9, and I do notice these tiny issues.

Compliments aside, please stop stealing associations for my obscure graphics programs' color palettes  ;D

I don't know anything about Borg-like behavior on the part of MC9. (Funny how we all know what that means)
It's a chore just keeping other apps from stealing file associations away from MC.

JimH, Is the "Nameless One" back, perhaps?

You can't please all the people all the time
You can please all the people some of the time
You can please some of the people some of the time
You can please some of the people all of the time
MC can please most of the people all of the time or all of the people most of the time but not all of the people all of the time.

Now, what was the question?

Well, MC 9 is BORG, but that's good!!

Sounds like an attack on all other players  ;D ;D

"WE ARE THE BORG. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE"

Cheers,
Raist

P.S. Perhaps JimH should change his name to Locutus? ;)

P.P.S For me, MC is that way the BORG that I added some "modified" Real & QT-filters, now I can playback those files without crappy QT-Player & RealOne  8)
