Are there consultants who can install JRiver MC for Linux Ubuntu
« on: December 14, 2023, 07:04:18 pm »

I just bought a Linux Ubuntu mini computer to run JRiver for Linux. I have been running the Windows versions for years, but wanted to simplify and get away from Windows. After about three hour of trying no luck in loading JRiver. I have no experience with Linux. Can I get the recommendation of a consultant to help? I would pay a reasonable amount. I'm thinking possible someone could get remote control of my computer and simply install it in 20 minutes or less.

Pease don't tell me to do a search. I have done that.

Yes, I did for over an hour. It didn't install. No doubt I did something wrong. Those instruction are not for rank beginners. That's why I threw up my hands and wanted to just have someone do it for me. A video would be helpful, but I don't expect that.

I couldn't get the install program to run. I've seen some Linux tutorials on the net, but I was hoping I could load mc without hours of effort. Perhaps I need to update my Ubuntu to the latest version

What happens when you try? Can you post screenshots? Need to know the exact error(s) you're encountering here otherwise it's going to be hard to guess what the issue could be.

I appreciate your help. Before, I continue, I have a more basic question. Can I restore my MC windows library configuration in the Linux Ubuntu version of MC, or do I have to set it up manually? Will the Linux MC read the windows restore file?

You can restore a library backup from Windows in Linux, yes, however be aware the paths to your media files is going to be different on Linux and will have to be fixed before you can play anything in an existing library of files. You can do this using the Rename, Move, & Copy tool but be warned it's very easy to mess things up when doing it.

Just do clean install Ubuntu 22.04

Then do all updates

Then download .deb file from here: https://files.jriver-cdn.com/mediacenter/channels/v31/latest/MediaCenter-31.0.83-amd64.deb

Then install it (by default archive manager will open this file, you have to change it to software installer)

After installation you will find Icon of JRiver Media on app list.

Then rest of the things goes the same way like on Windows. You can also backup settings from Windows version and restore them on Linux version

After recent experience... I would give up idea to install JRiver media on Ubuntu.

Debian is much better choice. Debian 12.4 Gnome is almost that easy like Ubuntu 22.04.

Funny, I find Ubuntu the easier (and better) choice. Debian is going to confuse most first time Linux users with adding yourself to the sudoers file, which if you've never done it before can be quite a pain. Which isn't an issue with Ubuntu, and it ships with newer libraries and drivers (and Linux kernels), which can be a requirement if running newer AMD or Intel CPUs and especially newer GPUs like AMD RDNA 3 GPUs.

Also I wouldn't recommend Ubuntu 22.04 LTS at this point either (especially if running newer hardware), who knows what the dependency requirements for MC32 will be, and there's a chance Ubuntu 22.04 LTS *may* be too old to run it if they decide to rebase MC to a newer Debian released after Ubuntu 22.04 LTS was. This has caused issues in the past a time or two. Also 24.04 LTS isn't that far off now too, something else to consider.

I'm currently running Ubuntu 23.10 and it's the best Linux experience I ever had after years of using Ubuntu in the past, along with Debian, Arch Linux and Fedora and many, many others. I was honestly shocked how well it worked after installing without needing to tinker around with things like I had to on Arch Linux and Fedora and even Ubuntu in the past. For those coming from Windows and are more familiar with how that looks and functions, you may give Kubuntu a try instead. I tried Kubuntu 13.10 as well and was surprised how well it ran too, especially KDE Plasma's Wayland session running smooth as butter with its variable refresh rate support (Wayland VRR support hasn't landed in GNOME yet, hopefully GNOME 46). Easy chef's kiss praise for both Ubuntu and Kubuntu 13.10 from me. Of course, it'll probably come down to hardware. I'm running newer hardware so newer Ubuntu was required. Your mileage will vary of course no matter what, so I always recommend those unsure what Linux distro to use to distro hop around and try different things to find the distro which best fits your needs, but be mindful not to use distros that are *too* old in the dependencies department, it could cause unforeseen issues.

I know that you are highly experienced JRiver user with great knowledge about Linux. I have no intention to argue with you.

But... with all respect.

Sudo on Debian is not that difficult. It is just one command which can be easily found on internet.

Ubuntu have some advantages which you mentioned... but have also serious disadvantages about which you are not mentioning here but they are well known to Ubuntu users.

I also tried many Linux distributions (on my level of experience) and discovered that Debian 12.4 with Gnome is the most stable and easy solution for current latest version of JRiver.

It is almost that easy to install like Ubuntu. But JRiver is working better on Debian than on Ubuntu. I noticed some annoying problems with pop up windows in JRiver on Ubuntu. Also JRiver was less stable on Ubuntu.

I didn't noticed any of this problems on Debian 12.4 Gnome and because it is almost that easy to install like Ubuntu 22.04...   I would say that Debian may be better choice.

Of course... this will not apply in every scenario... but I think in most cases it will be win. The scenario that I have in mind is... very new hardware. But for middle age computer it make no difference.

PS
I already tried Ubuntu 23.10 and it looks promising. I can't remember that I tested JRiver on this version of Linux. I may give it try to make my own opinion based on my own experience.
