Media Center 10.0.75 beta available
« on: February 20, 2004, 03:25:00 pm »

This is a beta.  Avoid this if problems, changes, or crashes will upset you.  Do NOT try this if you aren't prepared for trouble.

Please reserve this thread for obvious bugs.  If you're not sure, or you need to ask a question, please start a new thread.

Please keep a list of issues you find and report them with each build until we have addressed them.

The latest known stable version of 9.1 is here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Please check the license and price thread before you download:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=17336

The latest beta of 10 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter10075.exe

IMPORTANT -- This build includes a re-worked handheld system.  Only IPOD, WMDM, and Nomad Jukebox players currently work (for Nomads, please install the new plug-in -- 9.0.33).  Tread lightly if handheld support is important to you.

10.0.75 (2/20/04)

1. Changed: Skins can now specify the Action Window list colors separate from other Action Window colors. (see Blue Steel for example)
2. Fixed: AAC tag reading could crash in some cases.
3. Fixed: AAC tag reading supports entire genre list. (instead of only certain genres)
4. Fixed: AAC tag reading wouldn't always import the year.
5. Changed: AAC tag reading much faster.
6. Fixed: CD burn action window has improved logic for drag and drop of files with changes to burn mode, drive letter, etc.
7. Fixed: Right-click on non customizable toolbars would still show a "Customize Toolbar" option.
8. Changed: Action Window and file lists have unique window names for easier access with automation tools like Girder.

10.0.74 (2/19/04)

1. Fixed: MC could prompt to rebuild the database on a removable drive handheld multiple times if it was empty.
2. Fixed: Certain advanced searches could cause an "Invalid argument" error message.
3. Fixed: Offline synchronized files could crash MC.
4. Fixed: Download Manager displays "Finished" status (instead of "Cancelled") when a resumed download is cancelled again.
5. Fixed: MC was unable to play preview files from Wal-Mart's web site.
6. Fixed: MC was not visible in task bar if invoked through automation interface.
7. Fixed: Several actions could cause the playing now scroll position to be lost. (Mini View and Standard View)
8. Changed: After a reshuffle in Playing Now, MC will show the currently playing file.
9. Fixed: Synching a handheld player without first starting the handheld Action Window could crash MC.
10. Changed: Updated the look of Action Window. (smaller icons, different background color, removed header images, etc.)
11. Fixed: Mouse back button behavior wasn't consistent in the Action Window.
12. Changed:  Removed iPod "Show files at root" option.

10.0.73 (2/18/04)

1. Changed: Album Analyzer no longer case sensitive when looking at artist names.
2. NEW: MC includes updated and improved Z skin.
3. NEW: Removable drive handhelds have a database -- synch and analyze are now much faster.
4. Changed: In Download Manager, Pause All button toggles between "Pause All" and "Unpause All".
5. Fixed: A link in the skin manager window was loading old skin page.
6. Changed: Currently playing file item, in content view, now uses bold font.
7. Fixed: "Update Tags (from library)" would erroneously ask for confirmation to keep changes when complete.
8. Fixed: Pg Up and Pg Down weren't selecting the next / previous track while editing in the AW.
9. Fixed: iPod last played could be off by an hour for DST.
10. Fixed: When tagging in the AW, clicking a new file could cause it to get updated along with the current file.

Thanks - was wondering if I was going mad!

An odd one with CD ripping. If I insert a CD and highlight one or more tracks - not the whole CD - that I want to rip, then r/click and select "rip CD" the next screen shows the list of tracks with the ticks against the right tracks that I've selected. This also works like that if instead of r/clicking on the tracks I go to the toolbar and click on the icon for CD ripping that I've customised.

However, if I select the tracks I want to rip, then click on "rip CD" in the AW, the next screen shows all the tracks with ticks against them, not just the ones I selected originally, and I have to untick the ones I don't want.

This may be by design, but I'd have though that you ought to get the same result whichever route you choose to go down to rip a CD.

It's working for me.  Is it possible something else is fighting with that association?  Maybe try a computer restart.

The Action Window headings are in ALL CAPS.  I think it is the only user interface element that is. Looks funny.

The View menu has a submenu called "List Style" which in turn contains a submenu called "List Style". Confusing. Shouldn't the first one be called "Configure View" or something like that?

In Mini skins, using the scroll wheel on the mouse over the volume slider is inconsistant as to how much it changes the setting by. Some skins are worse than others - particularly bad is the "lower left" and "lower right" skins - however others show it also.

gundan,

I had the same volume slider issue way back in v9.1.280:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=16111;start=msg109306#msg109306.

At JimH's suggestion, I simply re-installed my SoundBlaster drivers.  Slider has been fine since.

Give it a shot.  Good luck!

More mini-me related bugs (when LowerLeft/Right are used...not LL/R bugs, MC skinning engine problems):
1. With playlist window shown, right-clicking on the playlist window redraws the whole window on top of the track information window (should remain behind).

2. The playlist vertical scrollbar's thumb is not drawing correctly...almost reverse of what it should be...but, even that's not consistant.

1. "Auto Rip" is not working here. The progress bar remains full with the final rip speed to it's left. Underneath that it says "Complete. Insert another cd or click close". Underneath that, I have "show list" on the left and a close button on the right. After inserting the new disc, the file list refreshes, and all the new .cda tracks are ticked, in greyed out check boxes, I tried clicking one of these check boxes, and got the dialogue you see below. I moved it next to the rip dialogue for the screenie.
I have no option other than to click close and start the rip process from scratch.
Autorun for cd & DVD drives is disabled here. Tried initialising the rip from a toolbar button too, but got the same results. Unsure if it's a drawing bug or not, but notice that the rip progress meter has not made it fully to 100% done before the "complete" announcement is made?

2. [date] field not being saved to file. (option is set in tree & view settings)

3. Image > quick find in file/coverart directory does not pick up correctly named [artist] - [album].bmp files. (works with .jpg's)

4. 'Right click > locate > external, opens the containing folder in explorer, but the target file is not selected.

5. 'Right click > locate > on disc - internal' is still quite buggy. If the action window is showing a large screen like tag or filetype info, then a lot of wierdness ensues while MC drills through My Computer, and when its done, the AW obscures the selected tree node.
All appears to work a bit more smoothly when the action window is at its default size, "home" or "image" for example. Click back, choose another file, "locate" is now top of the menu, hit that, MC begins to refresh the left panel, then crashes. The numner of times locate is used before MC crashes varies, but the crash will happen. So far, I've not done 4 without a crash.

6. Right-click > send to > play > replace (shuffled) is not shuffling the tracks.

7. 3d picture cube is not updating coverart when track changes.

==============
==============

Wishlist Please consider these...

1. rename files from properties: Can we have an MRU button (for recently used locations) next to the browse button for "base directory"

2. remember action window state across sessions

3. remember right-click MRU across sessions

4. Auto-complete: Would be neat if this could also "auto-dropdown" and filter the list. (I always forget to drop-down first and think auto-complete is broke)

5. Long time wish :) (3d picture cube)

6. remember media mode state across sessions.

Thank you :)

Using MC's internal "my computer" (all of the following performed using the default "single folder" view).....

Selecting a folder in the tree, then dragging a file from the filelist and dropping it in a new location on the tree causes MC to crash. 100% repeatable here. The file is moved, but the database is not updated before the crash. The "move/copy disc file" does appear to be working OK however.
I tested above using 4 files. these 4 files were now out of place, and showing as not imported. the original location in the database was listing the files as "missing". I used the move/copy tool to put the files back where they came from, then located the directory internally, right-clicked it, and selected "import". The import was successful, I saw the dialogue showing files scanned/files imported, then MC crashed out again.

More on Auto-rip problems....
"atapi" is cd rom related right? After the crashes mentioned above, I checked the event logs here to see if there was anything there that might be of help to you, but there was nothing there. I did spot this however...

The auto-size of column logic is not working correctly -- or is this by design?? When I browse for a song, the columns are all perfectly sized up. But when i play the song, the playing icon appears in the left column and then all the text is pushed to the right, without the columns re-sizing. This causes a lot of text to be replaced with "dot dot dot"

Using "My Computer", I can drag a track from one album to another without a crash.  Is that what you're doing?

My files are stored like so...

D:\music\[file type]\[album artist (auto)] - [album]\[track #] - [name]

I drill down to "D:\music\mp3\" using the little "+" then select an album folder. The files are listed in the main window. I take one or more of those files and "drag and drop" them onto the "music" directory. This produces the crash. files are moved, database not updated. Tried with single and multiple selections, just tried it again with different files because the files I originally used have the artist filled with question marks, but still it crashed.

I hope this is the right place to ask this. If not, sry about it.

In version 9.xxx there were the back and forward arrows which i used a lot to jump back and forth between my library and playing now. i.e. i would go to audio library and do a search for keyword "french" then switch to playing now. Then i would just press the back button to go back to the library with the keyword "french" still active.

In 1.10, those arrows seem to be gone. How can i achieve this now? Is there a shortcut? Is there a way to make them appear again?

I hope this hasn't been answered a thousand times already.

Thanks in advance,

-Cascius

Bug:
When playing short videos (my music mpg's) MC is stalling (a few seconds) between videos and showing it's icon.  This has been happening since 10.073.
It's a bit annoying when your playing a high volume of music videos.  Please fix it to be seamless like before.

Thanks!  ;)

Audible files no longer work over Media Server.  They worked up until "relatively" recently, but I have no idea what build brought on this problem.  I know that they worked on 9.1.  This is a VERY important issue to me since I do all my management on one system and use Media Server to access the up-to-date library from my other system.  The Media Server log shows the files being accessed, but nothing is transferring.  Underneath the title on the progress bar it just says "contacting."  Sometimes it will fly past several aa files (i.e. it skips from one to the next without playing them) before it stops.

After I try to play aa files over Media Server, MC no longer works properly until I go into Task Manager and end task on "Media Jukebox.e," which gets "stuck" in the running processes.

Both systems are "activated" to play aa files, and both systems can play aa files as long as I don't use Media Server.

Thanks for looking into this,

Larry

I just burned a data Cd and MC mis-calculated the amount of disc space available.  The disc was labelled 80 min 730 MB.  I put 88 files in the burn queue that MC reported as 688 MB and 102% full.  I burned the disk anyhow and it was OK.

For info the disc contained a mixture of MP3 CBR and MP3 VBR.  1 file was reported as having more than 110 char file name.

You can customise "Back" onto the top and bottom toolbars.
I seem to remember a useful "back" or arrow on the middle toolbar

All recent v10 betas show an erroneous behavior when MediaCenter is open when my PC's are resumed from a hibernate state.

To recreate the error:

1) have MediaCenter open, playing a list of music & displaying a list of images.

2) pause or stop the music & image playback.  Do not exit or minimize the MC window.

3) hibernate the PC

4) resume from hibernation.

The error condition is that MC will act as if you're creating a new smartlist as soon as you activate the MC10 window.

This is not a huge problem, its easy to just cancel the SmartList creation.  But this is clearly an unintended behavior.

Is THAT why so many stations are suddenly giving error messages?

I also noticed that the speed selection box for station searches doesn't work -- you get all speeds regardless of what you select in this drop down box.

One other thing -- some stations automatically bring up the "playing now" screen as if they have video content when in fact they don't.  This is annoying if you're going through a search list and trying stations since you have to redo the search and find the spot you left off.

In 'Tag Info', using large fonts doesn't space the top few rows properly. Have to do a 'Show All Fields' then turn it off so it redraws with the proper spacing.

I can provide a screen shot if needed.

Here are problems I encountered.

Existing smartlists aren't updated for iPod during a sync.  For example, if I have a 5 star smartlist and change some songs from 5 to 4 or 3, those 4 and 3 star songs are still in the list.  Another example is the unrated smartlist, where rated songs stay despite new iPod-applied ratings.  To work around this, I delete all iPod playlists before syncing.

Clearing the library still removes all playlists.

The handheld icon in the action window still flickers when MC is busy.

Yes, I noticed this in .74, and wondered if it was just something going on with my iPod, so I restored it, but I haven't done a sync yet with .75.

Edit
Just installed .75 and my playlists are definitely not being updated on the iPod.

I've put this thing in a separate thread first, but it seems to me that I've bumped into a bug:

I'd like to disable this 'Save folder structure' option when I burn a c.d.
I see the option, but I can't switch it off.
When I try to disable this option after I dragged some files into the box I get the message: "There are no folders or files queued to this device".

It burns all these directories I don't need - I simply want to burn a file from whichever directory and this file should show up in the root of the CD.

I use 10.0.75

Mark - This isn't a bug it just needs a little more explanation.  Rather than start a discussion here I think you should find your original thread and repost your question in there.

The "Rip CD" window of the Action Window isn't updating logiacally/properly.  When I finish a CD, it says "insert another CD or hit close."  If I simply insert another CD, it continues to show the previous rip status.  The only way to get the rip window to update is to close and re-open it.  Until I do this, the "Rip" button does not appear.

Also, if I take one CD out and put another in before ripping either one, I have to close and open the rip window for it to show the new CD's title.  It is not intuitive to have to keep closing and openning the Rip window in order to rip CDs.

ForsakenArdor and SouthsideIrish,

Do you have 'Update tags info' checked? If so, if you change a rating in MC and  then sync, iPod will update the tag in MC to its old state and then sync which would give you the result you are seeing. I will change this so that if you have 'Update Tag info' checked the iPod rating will change MC's rating and if it is unchecked, the Rating will change on iPod.

-Edit- the change I mentioned is in tonight's build.

MarkCoutinho was right and I was wrong (though in my defense his description of the bug was a tad misleading).  There is indeed a bug with CD/DVD folder naming.  Here's the evidence:

All recent v10 betas show an erroneous behavior when MediaCenter is open when my PC's are resumed from a hibernate state.

Could you (or some program) be hitting F9 somehow during this? (the shortcut for smartlist creation)

Audible files no longer work over Media Server.

I'll check into this on monday.

Thanks,

j

Have you had any luck with this yet?

Thanks,

Issues with Quicktime Videos

1. When importing quicktime video (.mov) files, they get incorrectly tagged with the media type "Audio". I always need to change them to media type "Video" manually.

2. When pausing a quicktime video, there is no right click menu option "Use screen grab for thumbnail".

Since I have a lot of quicktime videos, this is becoming quite tedious to workaround. It just seems as if Quicktime video files are not fully recognized internally as video files.

We'll take a look at this.  I can reproduced it.

That's because we use the QT playback engine so there's no way to get it.

Problem with burning CD.  I changed the tags of CD I ripped.  I then tried to burn new CD and tags were wrong (looks like maybe what they were before changes but can't swear to it).  Also I updated sequence order....now had same numbers as the track numbers....but it didn't burn in that order!
