Access Control for newbie
« on: August 18, 2004, 08:59:21 am »

Hi, I'm trying to work out the Access Control settings. There are files I would prefer my kids not to see and I understand MC provides a way to do this, however I am unsure about the actual process. Do I need to tag each file, or add something to the name? And what will be visible if I get it to work.

Many thanks from a still struggling through MC newbie.

This is from the Help file:

Access Control (Filter)
With Access Control you can exclude files from displaying in your library.

1.   First, you must set up a password-protected account.

2.   Go to View > Access Control.

3.   Type in a user-name and password. If you leave the password field blank and just press the Enter key, you will not have to login to use Access Control from that point forward.

Create filters

1.   Open Access Control (View > Access Control)

2.   Login.

3.   Place a checkmark next to "Enable Access Control".

4.   Select from the standard filters by clicking on the drop-down menu, or select the Advanced button to create a custom smartlist.

What I've done is either create a new field that I flag... actually I think there's one in there already, or just create a playlist and through everything I want restricted in there. Then just tell the Access Control window what playlist or field to key in on and tell it to exclude those items. It works great. None of that stuff shows up at all. It' s like they're not even part of the library.

Doof, is your access controll set up actually working at the moment? I had one set up under MC 10 but it doesn't seem to be working under MC 11. Just wanted confirmation before diving in and posting it as a bug.

Cheers

Yeah, it seems to be working fine. I just tried it on the latest build. I picked some songs, set their Access Rating field to "R", then enabled Access Control and set it to "Prevent Access To Ratings: R, NC-17, Adult". Clicked OK and the songs I had set to R vanished from sight.

Sorry Doof should have explained myself better. I can do what you've just described but when i exit out of MC and then restart the program the items that were access controlled are visible again.

Yup, you're right. MC seems to be forgetting your Access Control settings. I'm seeing that here as well.

Ok, I'm still confued. How do you set Access Rating fields? I get the control panel settings, but have no idea how to set the Acess Rating. However, from the comments above, it doesn't work anyway?

read the part of the help file that jim posted above.

but generally speaking you have to do 2 things:
1.
tag some of your files to nc17 or whatever (in the extended fields part of the tag window)

& 2.
set that control panel thingy to say dont show those tagged files.

 :)

Great, thanks for that. I have tagged the files I want to restrict and thney have disappeared.

Next question, is there a way for me to view them without turning the access control off?

Cheers
