Library Server Problem with Build 11.0.196
« on: February 23, 2005, 07:06:37 pm »

The problem: I can't connect to my media server.

Now for details. The Host machine and the client machine are both running the same build---11.0.196. The host machine has the library server service started, and is set to run a remote server on port 80 on startup. The host machine has a registered copy of MC, but I haven't yet got around to registering the client machine.

When I tell the client to search for local servers, it can't find any. I went into library manager, and added the library manually, setting the IP adress myself. When I try to load the library, it says:
Quote
Failed to install package.

More info: Failed to unzip file 'C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp\tmp10A.tmp'
URL: http://193.168.1.129:80/GetLibrary

I'm not sure what other information you'll want. The host's system info is below, and I'll post the client's next.

Thanks for your time!

Lachlan

The registration doesn't matter.  If the client can't find the server, it may be because a firewall prevents connection on the port being used.

I just had the router DMZ the host machine, and shut off ZoneAlarm on both machines, and it still didn't work. Also, back when I used Media Jukebox, the sever for that program worked without changing firewall settings, so I doubt this is all that different.

Maybe I'll see if I can get it to work between two other computers.

Let me know if you can think of anything else to try!  :)

Try moving the port it uses.  If you're on 80, try 81, for example.  Something else may be using it.

Also, turning off a firewall does not always work.  We've seen instances where an un-install was required.

Also, you may have the Windows firewall on.

The error message is different if the server cannot be reached. It should be like this:
Code: [Select]
Failed to connect to a server.

Reason: Unknown.
URL: http://192.168.0.2:4798/GetLibrary

Failed to install package.

More info: Failed to unzip file 'C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp\tmp10A.tmp'
URL: http://193.168.1.129:80/GetLibrary
Could the client MC have some kind of installation problems?

Could be out of temp space.

I deleted everything in the temp folder it referred and tried again with no luck, so I don't think it's out of temp space. The HD has lots of room still.

Could be a bad install. I'll try a clean install.

BTW, do I need to start Library server on the client as well as the host? I hadn't done that.

I tried a clean install---no go. I tried to have the machine I was using as client host, but that doesn't work either.

Does anyone else use 11.0.196's library server? If so, please say so. I know it's probably something wrong with my set-up, but I would appreatiate not having the nagging doubt. . . ;)

The connection part in Library Server works normally. I don't think it has changed recently.

There are some problems with the file format conversion options, but that is a not related.

I seem to recall that it was reported that login/password didn't work.  I don't think we've had time to confirm that.

It doesn't harm, but it's not needed or used.

It seems to be broken. The client shows this error message after enabling authentication on the server:

Quote
Failed to connect to a server:

Reason: The handle is in the wrong state for the requested operation.

URL: http://192.168.0.52:4798/GetLibrary

I would turn the handle, but can't find it.  ;D

I really reaching now I think, but is there any services I should make sure are running? I did so tweaking on both computers, disabling services we didn't need. I tried to make sure I had all the ones with likely sounding names enabled, but it didn't seem to help. Does it need the Qos RVSP service? I think that is enabled, but I can't remember now.

The thing is, I think MC 10 streamed just fine even after those tweaks.

No services are required.

I'm a little lost.  Did you try another port?

What port are you running on?

Did you start the server?

I have not yet tried another port. . . how exactly would you do that? I assume I'm currently running on port 80, because I thought it said it would default to port 80.

The Library Sever plugin is started. Also, under startup options, I have "Run a remote server on Port 80" checked.

You realize the services I was referring to were Windows services, not MC services, right?

Sorry if I'm not being clear.

The options are in the plugin window:

Remote Server is a different thing. It's for receiving basic commands from a remote pc that uses a web browser for sending the commands. You should turn it off or run Library Server on a different port.

When you connect from the Library Manager, you must give the server address in "address:port" format, like this: 192.168.0.2:4798

These techspot.com guides might help in determining what services are needed:
XP    http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/winxp_services/index.shtml
W2k  http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/win2k_services/index.shtml

Library server hasn't changed recently, so it should work for you. Definitely try the other port.

You can't run two services on one port.  Turn off Remote Server (to test).

OK, that sounds promising! I can't try it tonight though---my brother is on the other computer. I'll try it tomorrow and tell you how it goes.

Thanks for the prompt replies. . . They came a lot faster than I was expecting.  ;D

OK, it's working now. Once again, the problem was my own stupidity. After I turned off the remote server, it still didn't work so I was puzzled. I had gone into the plug-in manager and clicked the "Start" button for the library server, but I never even realized there was Plug-ins section in the treeview for the main application.  :-[

All is well now, though. Thanks guys, you were a lot of help!  :)

Good that you got it working. I don't think "your stupidity" was the problem. MC11 has many new things and it's not always easy to find and use them because the documentation (MC Help) is not updated yet.

These threads are good reading for those who are going to start using Library Server:
