Problem importing files with long names
« on: October 04, 2007, 12:32:28 pm »

I am continuing my evaluation of Media Center and I fear that I may have come across a serious bug or perhaps limitation which would preclude my purchase. I ripped a CD into Apple Lossless format using DBAmp and then imported it into JRiver. For some reason it only imported 9 out of 12 files. Further investigation showed that those files with the longest file names were not imported. So for example a file named

Evergreen - Tripping Up the Stairs, The Dog's Tail, Sweet Biddy Dally.m4a

or full name

F:\cd collection\Evergreen\Evergreen - Tripping Up the Stairs, The Dog's Tail, Sweet Biddy Dally.m4a

refuses to import (note this file length is less than 256 characters). I tried double clicking on this file from explorer and it still didn't play. If I shorten the length to something like.

Evergreen - Tripping Up the Stairs, The Dog's Tail.m4a

then it does play and import.

This is could be a major problem for me as I am dealing with a huge collection of mp3 and m4a files - well over 2000 albums worth and I have to know that Media Center is capable of importing all my files.

Note - I did look in your help and searched the forum for this problem but didn't come across anything.

MC uses Quicktime for some filetypes.  Quicktime has a 64 character limit.  That's an Apple issue.  Any other lossless format would probably work fine.  You could test that.

Pursuant to using QuickTime, there is plenty of information around about installing the correct DirectShow filters to be able to play m4a files (look for postings by glynor and/or about CCCP). After getting that set up, all MC uses QuickTime for is the DRMed files from the iTunes Music Store.

That can significantly decrease the problem of long filenames...
