How can you play Bluray discs?
« on: November 03, 2011, 06:55:34 pm »

Does MC17 play bluray discs natively?  Or do I need to add another program such as AnyDVD HD to support bluray.

Hey folks,

I am sorry but that wiki page is unclear.

Overview

Media Center supports playback and ripping of Blu-ray.

and

Playback

Insert a disc and the program will offer to play it.

More Information

Please see Matt's description of Blu-ray support in MC16. MC 16 can play Blu-ray discs or rips.

Blu-ray support requires AnyDVD HD or equivalent to read the disc.

This led me to believe that more info is for MC16 and MC17 supports bluray natively but it doesn't. I am still required to install a 3rd party program (which doesn't work properly either, but that is a different story).

Why doesn't MC include a bluray license?

I can buy bluray players for 50 euros. It will play any disc. Dedicated DVD/bluray software like PowerDVD can be bought for 40 dollars (probably cheaper if you search for it).

I don't get it ... I am sorry guys I'm a little bit dissapointed.

AnyDVD HD works well for me.

The Blu-ray club costs $50,000 to join.  They don't make it easy.

I can't speak for everyone here, but a lot of us rip our BD movies and store them on our computers. To rip a BD you need a program like AnyDVD to remove the built in copy protection. Since most of us already have this program it makes no sense for JRiver to include it (for which they would have to charge for it) and then I'd be paying twice for the same program.
If you decide to purchase a BD "copy protection remover" program, I suggest AnyDVD HD. It's very well supported and updated regulary.
