Downloaded album does't appear in JRiver Directory
« on: March 02, 2014, 01:56:30 pm »

I downloaded several albums from HDTracks as I have done before. This time, only one of these appears in the JRiver interface although it is clearly present on the drive in my High Res Downloads folder. I cant find any way to import it (admittedly I'm a newbie also and really don't "get" this yet!)

Any help would be appreciated.

Look through the view Audio > Files to see if you find the tracks.  They may be incorrectly tagged.

You can use Search using the part of the file path where the files are located to help.

This response is based on JRiver Version 18.

I’m assuming you are using the File, Import screens to import your music files into JRiver.  If so, here are a couple of suggestions to get past the problem.  When you get to the “Media Import” screen, trying using the “Import a Single Folder” option as this will keep things simple.  Also, you will encounter a “Import These File Types” box.  In that box, click the arrow next to “Audio” to view audio file types and make sure the type you want to import is checked.  Albums from HDTracks are typically AIFF, ALAC, FLAC, and WAV files so click those on.

If you are not familiar with the File, Import screens, here are some instructions below:

Click “Tools” at the top menu bar, then in the dropdown window click “Import”.  Then click “Import a Single Folder”.  Click the NEXT button and the “Media Import” screen will open.

In the “Import these file types” box, click the arrow next to “Audio” to view audio file types and make sure the type you want to import is checked.  Albums from HDTracks are typically AIFF, ALAC, FLAC, and WAV files so click those on.

Next, click the BROWSE button and this will open a “Browse for Folder” window displaying a folder tree.  Navigate to the drive and folder where you stored the HDTracks album and click on (to highlight) the album to import (Note: you can only select one album).  Click the OK button and this takes you back to the “Media Import” screen.  Click FINISH and the next screen that appears should display “Imported XX new files.”

You can go to “Playlists” then “Recently Imported” to see the album you imported and song details.

Thanks for your thorough instructions. I was able to create a new Playlist from the missing file but it still does not appear as a thumbnail picture to open on the "Audio" pages. I can only find and play it via a Playlist. Any other ideas about putting it in the "main" Audio section (album art plus track listings)? I am using v. 19.

Thanks again for your help.

Glad you were able to make some progress.  Because the album is now in Playlist and you played it that means it is in JRiver.  You saw it in Playlist “Recently Imported” I assume?  What is the name of the album?  Was album artwork supposed to be included in the HDTracks download?  Do you have your albums that you play in JRiver stored in different drives or are they all stored together in the same directories/subdirectories?

Here’s my shot at a quick fix…..Try closing JRiver and rebooting the computer.  Then reopen JRiver and see if the album appears at Audio, Albums.

It’s time to explore and look for clues…..

COMPILATION ALBUMS
I noticed that albums with various artists showed up in Audio, Artists listed under a group called Multiple Artists.   However they listed normally in Audio, Albums.  Is yours a compilation album by chance?

TAGS
When JRiver imports an album it notes where that album is physically stored by remembering the path to that album, for example F:\iTunes\iTunes Music.  It doesn’t move the album or create another physical copy.  JRiver also notes other info about the album such as the song names, track number, artist, filename (path) file type, etc. called tags.

Try looking at the Album’s tags for a clue.  View tags by going to that Playlist where you see the album and clicking (to highlight) a song.  Then open the Action Window (usually in the lower left of the screen) and click Tag.  Scroll through the tags.  Look at Filename tag.  It should show the drive and folder where the file is physically stored.  Look at Album tag.  Is this the album name you expect?  Let's make sure that it is.  Look at Image File tag.  If it doesn’t have a value then the thumbnail art may not be recognized by JRiver.

ALBUM VIEW
Audio, Album can show you different views.  Views can be changed by clicking “Album” in the header of the view pane and then selecting the options in the dropdown window like List style Thumbnails or List style Details.  Change this to List style Details and maybe the missing album will pop up.

LIBRARY STRUCTURE
My music library is stored and structured by Songs under Album folder which is under Artist folder.  Is this how your library is structured?

Looking forward to hearing what you find out.

Oh, best to not close JRiver before you go to Playlist and look at those tags.  This is because, depending on how the option is set, closing JRiver may clear the info in Playlist "Recently Imported".  I think the setting that controls this is under Tools, Options, General, Advanced.  Under Advanced, in the "Clear recently imported and recently ripped on exit" box, there are choices. I think the choice "Leave all tracks" will keep your "Recently Imported" Playlist intact.

Hi Phil and once again thanks for your comprehensive and clear instructions.

Sadly, I pursued your various suggestions with no useful outcome. Some information I did locate however may be useful (?). I was able to find the track listings in file view but they were not associated with an album. Each was listed separately and when exploring their Tabs, no information was present on them except for the album name.

When I went directly to the drive where my downloads are kept via Windows, I could easily locate the file for the album (not a compilation by the way) and, in it, the tracks and cover art (latter as a .pdf file) are present. The contents of the file were/are exactly like all the others in my Hi Res Download section of the drive and JRiver has never had a problem with the others.

Also, I did search through all manner of possible names, etc. and views in JRiver for the album and it was nowhere to be seen.

Question: Is there a way to make JRiver find the file on the drive and essentially reprocess it so that it appears inside like all the others? Is it possible that there's something in the file name, extensions, etc. that block JRiver from doing this?

Again thanks for your help and sorry that this doesn't resolve readily!

A clue may be your discovery that only the Album tab in the song files had a value. That does not sound normal as there are usually several tabs filled in. That said, the fact that an album was associated with its song files in the Tabs should have enabled the album to show up in the Audio, Albums view.  Does the Artist for these songs show up in the Audio, Artists view?  BTW, the icon in the upper left corner of the Tab Action Window, when clicked, shows a pulldown window with tab view choices.  It might be set on “View Default Tabs.”  To be sure you are seeing all Tabs, select “View All Tabs.”

You asked about reprocessing the misbehaving files.  You can try re-importing the album with the Tools, Import, Import a Single Folder method.  This is easy enough to do except for one possible complication that is easily overcome.  When I tried to re-import an album, JRiver displayed a message that 0 files were imported.

After trying a few more times and getting the same message, I found out that JRiver will not re-import files that are already in JRiver.  So, if you get this message, you have to delete the song files in JRiver first, then import those files again.  If there is a setting in JRiver that allows re-importing without first deleting, I am not aware of it.

I have not heard of file names, extensions, etc. causing the kind of problem you describe but I’ll be on the lookout for it.

I wonder if it’s possible that something is wrong with the original files or download process from HDTracks.  Maybe the album can be re-downloaded from their site or they can be contacted for a solution.  I say this because it sounds like you have processed albums from HDTracks before and gotten them into JRiver without incident.  So maybe this one download is defective.

Please let me know what you find out.

I've been facing the same problem as you.

It started some days ago, and it happens on both computers I have JRiver installed.

The files are imported, but they don't appear on the "Audio" section, only on the "Recently Imported" playlist, and without tags. If I look for artist, or album, nothing is found.

As an observation, it's happening to EVERY new album I import since the problem started.

I have found a tedious but effective workaraound. Try and see if it works for you:

After the first import, when the problem occurs, do this:

Move the folder of the album to another place. The destination must be a folder that JRiver "sees".

Execute import again in JRiver. This time the album must show up for real.

Move the folder back to its original location and execute import again in JRiver, just to set the pointer to the right place.

Try this and see if it works for you.

Set auto import options under Tools/Import.

Add a folder, then edit it.

The options are set, but something is wrong somewhere.

All albuns are on single folders, inside a general "Music" folder. This "Music" folder is set on JRiver auto-import, so every new album should be automatically imported when auto-import is run.

It has worked flawlessy for more than a year, until 2 or 3 weeks ago.

JRiver says the new albuns are imported, but they don't appear on the Audio section, or any other section, only in the "Recently Imported" playlist, and without any tags.

The only solution I've found is to move the new folder around, like I've descibed in my previous message. Then JRiver sees the files as modified, and they appear correctly in the Audio section. Sometimes I have to execute the process more than once to make it work properly.

Select one of the files in Recently Imported.  Open the Tag Action Window.  What are the values for Media Type and Media Sub Type?

No tags...

I think I have found the culprit.

I was trying to do this:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/ISO_Files

and certainly screwed up. I removed the "tag on import" piece and everything seems to have come back to normal.

Thanks for all you help! Appreciated!
