Why is it that sometimes MC doesn't play a track all the way to the end and go to the next track? This happens with multi-disc albums--always between the last track on disc N and the first track on disc N+1. I appreciate gapless play where it's appropriate but this is negative-gap play.

In MC settings, do you have gapless chosen for the transition?

What version are you running?

I am using 20.0.10. I am using the default gapless play settings.

20.0.14 does the same thing. The last few seconds of the last track of disc N gets cut off and MC jumps to track 1 of the next disc.

I am listening to multi-disc classical albums--e.g., operas. Some consecutive tracks need to be played without gap and MC does it well. But when it comes to moving to the next disc, MC appears to be confused. In my experience listening to multi-disc classical albums, gapless play is not necessary (or should not kick in) between discs.

Did you check the gapless settings? Its in the options under Audio.

If its set to crossfade (which may be the default, iirc), it could cause this. Try either gapless, or even gapped.

I will try different settings but before I do that please allow me to share the result of my experiment.

I thought maybe that MC is confused by the decrease in the track number. For example, if disc 1 has 10 tracks, then the track number goes from 10 (of disc 1) to 1 (of disc 2) if I play the multi-disc album in disc-track order. I deleted tracks 1-10 from disc 2. So, I play track 10 (of disc 1) and then 11 (of disc 2). The problem went away. MC played until the end of track 10 (of disc 1) and then went on to play track 11 (of disc 2).

However, the problem remains if I go from track 10 (of disc 1) to either track 10 (of disc 2) or to anything later than track 11. In other words, unless the track numbers are consecutive, MC doesn't handle the gap properly.

That makes sense, as by default it'll do gapless on consecutive album tracks, instead of the selected track switch mode.
Check the settings, you should be able to fix it there.

I tried various settings, but I can't fix it. Would someone on JRiver's end replicate this problem and post a solution please?

What are the files?  MP3, FLAC, etc?  Anything special?  Multi-track?

All of the multi-disc CDs were ripped into FLAC using MC. The filenames are generated in the "[disc #]-[track #] name" format. The album name is the same and all of the files are stored in one folder. I import the folder and then play.

It doesn't have to be a multi-disc situation for the problem to occur. I just imported files ripped from one disc and sorted by name (and hence track numbers are not consecutive). The problem occurs whenever the track numbers are not consecutive.

Does anyone else have the same problem or replicate the problem?

Is the missing time typically silence?  If so look under Tools-->Options-->Audio. Do you have the "Do not play silence (leading or trailing)" check box checked?  If so, that's probably the issue and you should uncheck it.

It is checked by default and it was definitely a source of confusion for me when I installed JRiver.

If actual music is being cut off at the end of tracks you may have a different issue.
