As far as I know, you can already use Panel on an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield TV.

how?

chrome, while can be installed on shield, is a really poor if not unusable experience.

is there even a browser for apple tv?

remember - these devices use remotes with nothing more complex than up, down, left, right, and select

I have been experimenting with Panel using a mobile phone in the car, and for simple playback it is more than adequate. When selecting streaming rates do you have to stop/start playback to take effect? Is there any way to make the setting persistent? I don't need anything over 128 in my noisy little commuter.

Thanks.

They should persist unless you have cookies in the web browser disabled (or set to clear on exit of the web browser).

Really like the JRiver Panel idea instead of using dedicated apps.
However, JRemote and Gizmo have one particular advantage so far in my opinion:
I can browse a long list of albums by, using the capitals.
I know that loading an entire list of albums on one screen including the thumbnails would take long so you split it into several pages. However, the number of the pages are not that useful to jump to a certain artist/album.
Would it be possible to have an alphabetical index on top of the page instead of the page numbers?
Perhaps only optional, if other users prefer the way it currently is?

Kind regards,

In recent builds of MC, Panel should show an alphabet slider at the top of at least Audio.  It may not be everywhere.

Make sure you have MC24.0.46 installed.

yes.
i'd say all of panel. Is not really working correctly. sometimes refreshing helps.
But as I navigate it doesn't load page data very well. Or not at all.
I don't know what to try to test it.

Using Chrome to test, on a brand new Win10 laptop, very poor experience. Hangs, doesn't go Home but shows playlists instead.

Panel requires you to click Settings to change your Zone?

Ultimately, I'm not sure MC is well developed enough to serve the larger libraries we all have. Been noticing this for some time even using JRemote on a Gigabit LAN with modern equipment SSDs, and fast NAS, serving requests is just....slow.

Is the view with the alphabet selection on top mandatory or can the user choose to have one long list (like it was before) ?

Ok I finally have something at all to report about slow thumbnails.
Overall they still feel to slow to load when working. They seem to be first looking in each item to count the number of items in it. Then load the thumbnail. I guess waiting for jriver to generate the one image from all of them.
But! I have a DVR view that has 438 videos in it. If I go to that view it takes a really Long time. And after that all other thumbnails break in panel. Even on the views that were working.
I hope that help narrow down the chase of this issue.
Thanks

Found it!
The way the view was setup affected the thumbnail loading!

So i looked in the log and saw these calls.

1131313: 480: Sharing Plugins: JRWebService::Process: Start
1131313: 480: Sharing Plugins: JRWebService::Process: URL: /MCWS/v1/Browse/Files?Version=2&Token=nbVNRwx7&ID=1073&Action=Serialize
1132610: 3000: Database: CSearchFilesHelper::GetResults: Search: [=TVInfo(NameDisplayWithDate)]=[Olympics 2018: Figure Skating /(ice dancing/), /"Olympic Ice/" /(2018/)] (([Filename (path)]="\TV\Recording" or [Filename (path)]="playlater" or [Filename (path)]="\TV Recording") ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d); Elapsed ms: 1294.768
1132610: 3000: Sharing Plugins: JRWebService::Process: Finish (7281 ms)
1132610: 3000: Sharing Plugins: VHTTPMessage::Write: Wrote 148 bytes

But after i click to another view in panel. These calls were still going.
The other pages never get any of the thumbnails. Until it all of these previous calls finished.

It only seemed to happen with this specific view. I have setup for dvr recordings.

So i changed the search for this view.
From This:
([Filename (path)]="\TV\Recording" or [Filename (path)]="playlater" or [Filename (path)]="\TV Recording") ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d
To this:.
[Filename (path)]=[F:\TV Recording" ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d

It went from 7 minutes to under 2 minutes!!!
So I took them all out and now it's seconds for all the thumbnails.

So i made a top category with this. [Media Type]=[Video] [Media Sub Type]=[TV Show]
Then under that i have add the search back.
  • Recorded
    • Search

Why did these searches affect the thumbnail loading?

To this:.
[Filename (path)]=[F:\TV Recording" ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d

Well the first search is searching inside the path (one of the slowest fields) for several strings.  Just putting them all together (so there's only one [Filename (path)]) would really help.

The second search caps at the start of the string so is a lot faster.

I think you could take this:
([Filename (path)]="\TV\Recording" or [Filename (path)]="playlater" or [Filename (path)]="\TV Recording") ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d

And make it:
[Filename (path)]="\TV\Recording","playlater","\TV Recording" ~sort=[Date Recorded]-d

It should run quite a bit faster than doing independent or commands.

On iPad, latest iOS as of this post, either Safari or Chrome - trying to expand a video to full screen does not work.  The control is there but tapping it has no effect.

this works fine on both browsers on MacBook

My first impressions of Panel.

it does have potential, I can see it.   I don't like the whole web browser aspect but beggars can't be choosers as the saying goes.
That being said, here is my list of  gripes/criticisms/wishes/whatever you want to call them,

I'm not complaining because Panel is not everything "now now now" I'm just going through what I would like to see in it as an application that is useful to me.

Caching
I noticed this behavior in JRemote also.   There needs to be a way to cache album art so it doesn't have to re download it every. single. time

I don't like the way it buffers tracks, especially since I am forced to use MP3 320kbps (I can't stand 128k MP3)
It seems like it loads nearly half the track (rather slowly...) before it starts playing.   It does not buffer ahead the next track or keep the previous track buffered.

Playback Controls
They seem kinda wonky.  The  Next/Previous buttons on my receiver will seek the currently playing track if held down, however they will not skip to the next or previous track if pressed.

The Play/Pause button on my receiver momentarily pauses the music but then it immediately resumes playing.

Album Up/Down  does nothing when you would expect it to go to the next album in library order, etc..

I would like to see playback controls that make full utilization of basic car receiver controls.

Interface
I haven't played with it much. I understand it has a degree of customization available so I'm going to look into it.  However I will say it feels slightly clunky in the way it loads/queues songs.   I prefer the simple JRemote method where you navigate into an album and start playing from there.   I mean you can kind of do it, but then you have to navigate to the actual playlist part of Panel to gain access to  playback controls.

I would like to see Album listings reflect  Disc # like JRemote does.   So I go into an album with 15 or whatever discs, and I can see a clearly delineated list, which helps me find what I want easier if I am looking for a specific starting point. -  can this already be done via user modification?

So that's my primay feedback I guess.

A lot of my usage case is for out of the house stuff driving in a car,  and needless to say that right now the amount of time I have to pay attention to my phone to set things up or switch an album, etc.  is too much.   It doesn't make for safe driving.  Would love to see that improved.

Summary
I think the Panel should have a way to cache album art, video thumbnails, etc. I haven't modified anything about Safari,  maybe its the browser?  idk

I think Panel should provide caching options for music.   Give us the ability to say  "cache next/previous tracks up to X number of tracks".  Most people don't mind a brief pause upon starting playback -  it's the long pause between tracks that will drive people nuts, especially if they seek a lot.   Likewise I'd like to be able to set an initial buffer size in seconds, so it can start playing after  2 - 5 seconds or more have been cached.   This will help with large seeking between tracks  (i.e seek from track 5 to track 13) if those tracks are not within the  cached next/previous  data.

I would like to again, reiterate that we need AAC as an option.  Preferably  AAC-HE of some kind.   It will allow us to select much lower data rates for faster program response and reduce the need for a lot of caching in the first place.  (caching is still a great option if you live in an area like me which can go from LTE to 3G or no data in some spots).

At the very least I would like to see a 192Kbps  MP3 option added in the short term.   I think 192k is an acceptable middle-ground between  data usage /bandwidth required and sound quality.

Can't seem to connect to panel using the access key.   I tried both on my iphone (Wifi disabled) and on my local computer (connected to LAN/WAN)

Safari just hangs after I enter the access key, like its trying to connect.
On the PC on Firefox, I get an actual error page "unable to connect" and my WAN IP address/port  it tried.

I had no problem with access key resolving in JRemote.

I can access panel directly by  http://IP:Port   so this seems really weird and not sure where to look for the problem if its on my end.

Hi

When I'm playing through Panel, whenever I start a new track, it plays for a second or two, pauses and starts over playing the entire song with no problems. Feels like there's a buffering issue. It's a little annoying. There are no problems when I'm playing through MC. I'm using a win 10 tablet pc on local wireless network playing audio from a networked hard drive.

Panel does not continue to process a playlist when a phone has its screen shut off either by timer limit, or by manual button press.

It'll finish playing the current track (good),  but will not continue to even load the next track, until the screen is woken back up (bad)

Not sure if this is a "bug" or a "feature"

Seems to happen in both  Safari and Firefox Focus,  for iOS 12 on my  iphone.
I also just tested  Google Chrome and Firefox Focus on Android.

Google Chrome on Android is the only one that continued to play, so it seems to be something related to privacy settings  other browsers may use.

Hi

is it a bug or does the playlist dosent auto scroll/advance down to follow the track in panel?

it works well but then the current playing song has passed the initial view in the panel interface you only see the old tracks and not the current playing song

best

In recent builds of MC, Panel should show an alphabet slider at the top of at least Audio.  It may not be everywhere.

Make sure you have MC24.0.46 installed.

Thanks a lot for the information!
My Linux Server was not running the most recent build, I just updated it.
Really LOVE the new slider!

I've been using Panel on my phone during the commute each day and it's very handy but since I have an very large library the thumbnails load so slow that I rarely jump into the artist view and just jump into playlists.

Would it be possible for thumbnails to be turned off entirely in the list view?

I think I saw this question asked before, but cannot find which thread.
Is it possible to make Panel remember, ideally the exact place where the playback was stopped, but at least the last track played?
The issue I have is that I am listening to podcasts on my android phone while driving, and if the phone goes to sleep or gets restarted, I need to first scroll through a large library of podcasts to find the right one, and then fast forward through the ~ 1 hour long track to find where I left off...
  Thanks!

FYI, this shows up even if the sort on the view isn't alphabetical by title.  For example, I have a view set to sort by Import Date.  I want this so I see new things first.  At the top of panel is the alpha slider, which makes no sense.  It would be helpful if the slider was context aware and would change in this case to show me a date range.

I am not sure if this is the right place for this.  If not, sorry.  But I was having a problem starting a new thread.
A few weeks ago I was looking in the back end of Jirver. I may have pressed something by mistake because now, in the bottom right corner
or what I call the fancy view (where you watch movies) I have a little circle. No one else would know it there but it's really bothering me.
Has anybody ever heard of anything like that and how I can get rid of it?
Thanks

I need to ask as I've looked and searched without success.

Should I be able to see cover art in Panel for movies?

How about for season episodes for TV Series.?

I see cover art for Music (albums), For TV Series and for TV Seasons but that's it. No cover art for Movies or TV ep. under each season. Just lists of txt. Gizmo was much more appealing in these areas.

Is this how it's supposed to be? Am I missing a setting someplace that will turn on cover art for video content or are we txt lists only going forward?

Thanks,

Steve D.

Thanks,

Steve D.

By default, there really isn't a view that does this because videos aren't typically grouped into categories like 'album' so they usually just go right into list type views. You can modify a view to show cover art though. Go to Tools -> Options -> Media Network -> Advanced -> Customize views for JRemote, Gizmo & Panel... On the left side of the dialog that pops up, you can see the hierarchy JRemote, Gizmo, and Panel use. Toward the bottom, you should see a Movies category under Video. If you select Movies, on the right side you should see a box "Show Categories In This Order". Click on Add... next to it and select a field like 'Name'. Click OK once you're done to exit all the dialogs and restart Media Center. After restarting Media Center, the Movies view should then display cover art.

Went to Tools -> Options -> Media Network -> Advanced -> Customize views for JRemote, Gizmo & Panel and tried to change the layout for the audio section - moving Composer to the top of the list, then genre. Then added a files to display rule for composer to attempt to filter out all but the genre classical. Nothing changes in the panel view - under audio the old sequence is shown and every possible composer comes up under that section. Tried this on 24.0.56 and 24.0.58. No changes in JRemote either -what am I doing wrong???

Did you restart Media Center after making the changes?

Yes I did - a couple of times, the order in the customization panel is as I set it up but the display on panel firmly sticks to its original layout. To be fair the 24.0.56 machine is now kind of doing it right but a subsequent change and then restart is being ignored. The 24.0.58 machine adamantly refuses to change it's layout or follow the display files rule I set.

EDIT:- A complete computer restart fixed the problem but it does seem a little drastic!

Make sure you exit the media server also and you won't have to restart for changes.

As far as I know, you can already use Panel on an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield TV.

How can you use panel on an Apple TV without an internet browser?
I don’t think Apple TV has an internet browser.

By the way, panel on iPad has no wake on lan, JRemote has.
I like JRemote WOL feature to boot my HTPC.
