MC24 - Cannot use Theater View
« on: May 10, 2018, 07:22:53 am »

I have recently upgraded to MC24 but when I select Theater View I get a whole screen message saying ' error starting OpenGL engine (OpenGL 2.1 or newer required (1.1.0 found). I cannot go back to my music and have to shut down my PC and start again.
If I want to use my preferred user interface, ie Theater View, I have to use MC23. Has anyone else experienced this and maybe know what's going on, Terry.

What OS are you using?

What is the full version of JRiver?

I am having similar problems on my MC server.
I run MC on a small server that contains all my music and movies, this machine has no keyboard, mouse or monitor connected to it, so I use remote desktop to access it. This worked well with MC23 but now after upgrading to MC24 I find I am unable to make adjustments to the Theatre View environment as I cannot start it on my server as it errors saying OpenGL will not run on remote desktop.
As a temporary fix I have enabled Tools>Options>Theatre View>Advanced>Use legacy direct3D Theatre View (not recommended) but I am told this option will be removed in future versions of MC.

Remote Desktop with Theater View is not going to return, because its just technically impossible - unless Microsoft adds OpenGL support to future Remote Desktop versions. You can always use another remote control solution like VNC or similar applications.

Ultimately the problem is, Intel decided not to support or provide drivers for OpenGL 2.1 and above on older HD3000 integrated graphics on Windows 10.

So, the only real options* are...

1) Start thinking about and considering upgrading your hardware, especially if you're still using Sandy Bridge-era hardware. IMO, if you are using older hardware it'd probably be time to consider this anyways, especially if you're interested in 4K videos at some point in the future.

2) Add a dedicated GPU (if your PC supports it), which will allow the PC to gain newer OpenGL support. This is probably the most straightforward solution of the three options here. If you're using a laptop/notebook/etc. you're out-of-luck unless you replace it with something newer/more modern (with official Windows 10 support) or go for the third option...

3) Downgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 7 or 8.1, where there is official support from Intel for OpenGL 2.1+. If you're stuck on older hardware and upgrading hardware or adding a dedicated GPU isn't possible, this is probably the best way to go until Microsoft ends support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (I'd recommend Windows 8.1) - once that happens, I'd recommend replacing Windows with a Linux distro.

* I don't consider using the legacy Direct3D Theater View option as any sort of solution, just a temporary workaround. It's been marked as deprecated and the JRiver devs have said it will be removed in the future.

I have taken the link given by Awesome Donkey and followed the advise given by Country Bumkin in that link. I can now use
Theater View in MC24. Many thanks for all your replies, Terry

Again, using the legacy Direct3D Theater View option is just a stopgap measure. Reading what the JRiver devs have posted, that option is scheduled to be removed in the future. I'd highly recommend considering the options above instead.

Thanks Awesome Donkey. I, like thecrow above have enabled direct3D. I now appreciate this is a temporary solution but one which
I will have to stick with for the time being until such time as this option is no longer usable . Going forward I will have to get my son to help me with this computer malarkey (to me) and see which of your recommendations would be the way to go for me. Cheers.
