Playlist Editing from JRemote
« on: July 10, 2018, 02:07:27 pm »

No. Our development costs continue.

I love MC, but why does JRemote get so little attention? If what I see is correct, there hasn't been an update to the Android version since 2/16. The playlist editing feature doesn't work and it would be great if like some other media players, the application could bypass the internal DAC. You're very attentive to lossless performance on the MC side, we need to have a choice of DAC when using our mobile device.

I'm hoping for more active development of JRemote too. I use it on iOS, and while the basic functionality is good (even very good) the app really could do with a new, fresh design. The 'front page', with its total lack of artwork, isn't exactly welcoming and I would love to have an option to skip it altogether or decide which elements I see when I open the app (for example, one row of 'recently added', another row of 'most played' or something similar).

I also would like some changes in JRemote. Just a simple left -> right swipe to go to the next photo would be great.
It can't be too difficult to do.

I too would love to see more JRemote development. For instance a functionality like the 'locate' contextual command of Media Center and features that make browsing and searching for related songs, albums, artists and year quicker.

I am also be prepared to pay extra for it. JRemote is my main reason for using Media Center.

Looks like the devs are putting all their effort into panel unfortunately. JRemote is one of my main reasons for using MC also.

If you haven't used Panel for a few weeks, please try it.  It might take a day to get used to, but it's really solid now.

It works particularly well with Radio JRiver.

Panel is getting better (has gotten better), so I'll echo what Jim said and tell you to try it again.  Panel, however, doesn't deliver the same user experience that a native app does.

For those of you looking for that native app feel, I would encourage you to check out MO 4Media.  There's a trial period you can play with the app.  The developer is involved in the forums and is actively making changes.

Panel's updates are most appreciated. I especially like the index slider to locate content. It's a great interface when I'm at work on my PC, but simply isn't adequate on my phone. It's noticeable that there is no statement of ongoing or even forthcoming JRemote development, instead we are redirected to Panel.  Not to be contentious, but if there is no intent to continue working on JRemote, perhaps it's best just to say it.

What problems do you have on your phone?

Hi,
I cannot connect to panel using my access key from my phone, nor from within my network either from outside. I can do it from my tablet.
When I connect I don’t seem to be able to find the volume.
I don’t seem to be able to watch a film at full screen.
I appreciate it can be down to me and maybe for  other people panel works great.
But for me it doesn’t.

Turn the phone sideways (landscape mode) to get volume.

The Access Key method will work from outside, if your firewall is open and your router configured correctly.  The wiki has a topic on Network Access.

Hi,
Thanks for the volume hint, finally I’ve found it.
Still no luck connecting using the access key. Port is opened (I’m being connecting using jremote for years) but I don’t manage to connect from my mobile. Some times I can do it from my tablet.
You have managed to improve dramatically Panel, which I honestly congratulate you and your team for it, but in my humble opinion and without questioning your decision to allocate resources to panel and stop developing JRemote, there is still an important gap between JRemote and Panel.

Been a MC/JRemote users for several years/versions now.  I upgrade MC every year just to support the business.  I find it a shame that JRemote sits unattended.  Haven't tried Panel in a while, but don't think it allows for adding songs to a JRiver playlist???  That's one of my favorite features.  JRemote is fast, visually compact and for the most part just works (I did recently post about some problems I've experienced - seems no other users have experienced the same problem. No one else posted).  I've said this before on the forums, I'd be willing to pay an annual fee for JRemote if there were updates and improvements.  I assume it's a business model that doesn't look attractive to JRiver.

P.S. I'd look at MO 4Media but I'm pretty locked into the iPhone/iPad world.

Have you tried Creation 5, it’s DLNA developed originally for B & W

i wish it worked on the shield tv.   could side load it but it is not designed to work with a remote, which is the shield’s primary input device.  sigh.   still no jriver for shield tv

wonder if i could get the shield to show up as a renderer....

Panel, is looking good but it just not practical for big collections of music, it needs an alphabet to choose for example an artist among certain letter. I have more than 6K albums and is just not practical, Scrolling albums is a nightmare and sometimes very slow. JRemote is just fantastic, and is very sad that does not have further support and enhancements, and saddest the need to look in other direction like creation 5 for an app like JRemote that keeps being my favorite by far. I really encourage the team to keep working on it.

Thanks

Try updating MC.  The last two or three builds have an alphabet slider at the top in Panel.

I take the liberty to give my 2cts. From the top of my head the things that come to mind are:
- speed (JRemote is much snappier when changing views, scrolling and the "alphabet-bar" is a much better implementation than what Panel offers)
- flexibility of the GUI (JRemote views can be customized in MC)
- flexibiity in functionality (JRemote can tag, add to playlists among others)

Nobody has ever claimed it was.  Panel is designed as a simple playback tool.  It's easy to understand, touch friendly.  Because it's a web app, it runs on any browser on any platform.  It takes advantage of HTML5 which is supported by modern browsers.

We will consider adding functionality to Panel if we can do it without making it overly complex.

For playback, it should satisfy most requirements.

It is a great product. However, to me, it lacks iOS integration. In my opinion, it shouldn't be an OR but an AND to development for iOS and Android. I even would suggest having the same App ported natively on both OS's. I, of course, understand the resource constraints though.

Just a thought, but perhaps it's time to move JRemote to a yearly subscription model. Of course the issue is existing JRemote users who may not want to pay for JRemote as a subscription. You could fork JRemote and create a new JRemote version for a subscription model. Call the old version JRemote (Legacy) or JRemote 1 or something and call the subscription version JRemote 2 (or something else).

Hmmm, thinking more about what Jim said above you guys could merge an Android media player within the same app (and kill two birds with one stone). The app could function as both a standalone (Android) media player AND incorporate JRemote's feature set. The income created from the subscriptions *should* hopefully fund having a developer actively developing the app.

It could playback from local media on the phone, over DLNA/MCWS/etc. Could also allow offline downloads too (and could be used as a "wireless sync" type of deal, allowing the user to send playlists/files to the phone/tablet/other device or vice versa). Honestly if that was viable, the name JRemote wouldn't apply anymore (except as a JRemote feature within the app)... call it something like JPlayer or JMedia Player... or JRiver Media Center! :D Both Google Play and the Apple Store allow subscriptions, so that wouldn't be an issue.

Again just thinking aloud.

EDIT: For the sake of being simple, an app that could do the following;

- Function as a media player and playback any type of media located locally on the device (whether it be a phone, tablet, etc.), including audio, video and images. Likely Android at first, but *could* support iOS in the future?
- Incorporate JRemote's features (remote, player, etc.).
- Could support offline downloads or allow "wirelessly syncing/pushing" of playlists and/or files from a PC/Mac/Pi to a phone/tablet/etc. or vice versa (I'm thinking JRemote/DLNA/MCWS could help here with that, if possible).
- To fund development, either be a monthly and/or yearly subscription instead of a one-time purchase.

Because that's what Jim mentioned above. Android would likely be much easier to get MC (at least in some form) working on it versus iOS. I'm assuming, of course, that's what the goal could be: running MC (in some form) on Android.

Well, kinda. Not MC in the sense of the full program ported to Android, such a thing likely isn't possible. More like "MC" as in the engine that can playback media, on Android. Maybe it's ported from existing code, maybe it's developed from scratch, who knows. Could use JRemote's UI as a basis for the media player portion of the app (which I'm sure users would appreciate as the JRemote UI has been well liked). Getting such a thing working is likely easier on Android than iOS. Not sure if iOS puts any restrictions in place for a media player on iOS (e.g. like forcing them to use iTunes' engine, like they do with web browsers having to use WebKit instead of their own engines). But that's besides the point... the idea is to have 1 simple app (with a monthly and/or yearly subscription) that can function as both a standalone media player AND as a remote/player (ala JRemote) for JRiver Media Center installed on a PC/Mac/Pi/etc. on Android (and maybe iOS later on). This could also allow JRemote/Gizmo to stay intact as standalone apps that *could* get updates made to them via the developments/improvements made to a new media player/remote app.

It's all hypothetical of course. Just giving an idea that could help fund the development and allow a merged standalone media player/remote on mobile devices. In all likelihood, JRiver already likely has thought of that.

Jim, the biggest thing for me missing from Panel that JRemote (iOS) is excellent at, is viewing album art work, liner notes, PDF's etc. Is it possible that Panel could one day provide that? Also JRemote is far more responsive, at least in my setup, than Panel, which I find can be slow and music will sometimes stutter when I'm scrolling rapidly thorough albums. That doesn't happen at all with JRemote. I do try Panel, however, every time I see an update. It's a cool concept and like where it's going but JRemote (iOS) is still the cat's 'hind end' for me.

No, that does not work. You do get the options, and always get a "new playlist failed" message whether attempting to add to an existing playlist or even creating a new one.

I have been using the newest Panel for a few days now and it is better, but from a usability and appearance perspective, JRemote is the better tool. Is it not possible to charge for updates to JRemote through the App/Playstore?

How about a security update to include support for SSL?  This important security change was introduced in MC23, yet JRemote can't take advantage of it:
