Purchased today, uninstalled, got refund.

JRemote2 was able to cast an album to Chromecast Audio device, which played all the way through. That's the good news, and an improvement over original JRemote for Android.

The bad news: App crashed immediately or within about a minute of every relaunch, while casting. Phone reboot didn't help. Started to cast another album, playback started, and app crashed immediately. Chromecast continues to play. JRemote2 shows time elapsed/remaining in track, but reports nothing is playing and an empty playlist, before it quickly crashes.

I would happily buy the app again if this issue can be resolved. JRemote2 otherwise would be a nice update to control MC server.

But JRemote2 has a serious problem on my setup in relation to Chromecast. Would it matter that MC server is not on the same network segment as the Chromecast? Phone is Samsung Galaxy S7.

Loving the products that you guys produce (ie. MediaCenter 26 and JRemote is pretty hard to beat)!

I just realised I had the 'MO 4Media' app installed on my phone, so I'm giving that a try - supports Android Auto...

Same here. I would purchase JRemote2 instantly if it supported Android Auto, otherwise have no use for it. There must be a sizeable user base with a similar use case waiting in the wings.

Anyway to set the app to "this device only". I don't ever want it to control devices in the home, but just to the phone.

Reason being there has been a couple times where I was away from home and the app likes to set back to my living
room for some reason. The volume was maxed out and it started playing on the house speakers while my wife was sitting
there with the baby and toddler. Needless to say she wasn't happy, and then it happened again.

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere. Should JRemote2 be able to run on a NVidia Shield? I just bought a 4K TV Pro and I am told 'JRemote by JRiver isn't available on Google Play on this device'.

My aim with the Shield is to remove the need for wifie to swap between the Smart TV and the PC that runs JRiver.

Thanks both. I have installed both JRiver for Android and Craig's MO 4Media. Both seem to work although I havent played much.

I will continue to run JRiver on my HTPC.

Given that I know absolutely ZIP about the capabilities of JRiver for Android, what are the pros/cons for playback via JRiver for Android on the Shield vs streaming the audio/video to the Shield from the HTPC. I use DSP and loudness functions on the HTPC and would like to retain both of those if possible when playing back through the Shield.

Is there not an option in JRemote to save tracks for offline listening. I was surprised not to easily find an option, maybe I missed it. Spending a day on airplanes this would be a really useful feature.

Nope, there isn't a feature for offline listening. As far as I know the only remote that can do that at the moment is MO 4Media.

Gizmo has a cache. When you start playback on your LAN, it can download.

JRiver for Android can play files from the phone.

Is the bookmark feature available with this app? Have things setup according to the wiki but the files just start from the beginning.

Also in "recents" I don't see anything that I listen to on the app. Seems to only be albums and not single tracks maybe?

It may not be supported, but I've sideloaded the apk and it's "working" on my AndroidTV device. At least, well enough to appreciate the hi res streaming from my server...

You may prefer using Panel for more library editing functions on mobile.

Is it just me or can I not turn off video conversion in JRemote2? I can turn off HLS VOD video, but then I still see conversion in the network activity log (Conversion=Android).

Same for audio, my Samsung Galaxy A51 for example can play wma, but JRemote2 is converting anyway. I wonder how JRemote2 determines support of a particular format?

I recently purchased a portable projector with Android TV on it, which made think about the best way to get content to it. And I ended up purchasing MO 4Media's app which supports ATV out of the box. I'm pleasantly surprised at how many options it has (to control conversion for all kinds of scenarios such as wi-fi/mobile data/casting), compared to JRemote2. I guess I'm spoiled by the many options MC itself has, I was expecting it from JRemote2 too.

JRemote2 is generally quite usable, but could do with some new Audio features in regards to Chromecast:

When selecting a specific Zone, but streaming to a Chromecast instead, it would be very useful if Zone associated DSP was applied to the stream being sent to the Chromecast.

As it is, there's no way to apply DSP to Chromecast input unless I use a DLNA client which happens to support Google Cast. Ex. in BubbleUPnP, I can select a JRiver DLNA library and stream to a Chromecast with that library's associated DSP applied. It's unfortunate that the developer's own remote control application can't do the same.

For those of us who use Google Cast devices as our primary network players for our HiFi systems, the ability to apply DSP to the streams is essential. Many of us use the Zone specific DSP and DSP-Over-DLNA facilities for Speaker/Room Correction EQ. Not having access to that through JRiver's own remote control application, JRemote2, when streaming to a Chromecast is a major drawback.

If you move everything from your old phone to your new one it will move automatically. Otherwise you can download it from the Play store.

As long as you're using the same Google account you bought the JRemote2 app with in the Google Play Store you can reinstall JRemote2 on a new phone that is replacing your old phone.

The key here is you have to be using the same Google account that you purchased JRemote2 with, otherwise if you're using a different Google account you'll have to re-purchase the app.

I would like to know if the app is in development, too. The app seems to be neglected, especially the iOS one; you can't even find it in the iOS app store anymore.

One complaint is I don't like how multi-valued fields are represented.

For example:
You have a multi-valued field called Genres. A few songs have the value 'Alternative; Rock'. Some other songs have the value 'Alternative; Punk'.
The desktop program will show them properly organized where you can see both sets under Alternative. The app, however, would show 2 separate folders named 'Alternative' .

So every combination of the field will show a separate folder instead of following what the main desktop program would do; simple grouping.
When you have hundreds of combinations, well..you get the idea.

I have a lot of other complaints, but based on the lack of answers to what others have asked, I don't feel they would be taken seriously here. Refer to the App store reviews (the Android one since iOS apparently doesn't exist) ; should cover most of them...

The app's developer, Hendrik, has been focused on JRVR development for a good while now. I'd assume the JRemote2 app is still in development, but it's not currently in active development because of the ongoing JRVR work.

JRemote for iOS is a completely separate app from JRemote2 for Android (which was developed by Hendrik from the ground up). From what I've observed JRemote for iOS' development has slowed down a lot over the last few years, basically in maintenance mode with only bug fixes, when Bob has time to work on them. Keep in mind that Bob isn't JRemote for iOS' original developer, the original developer left the project years ago.

I’m sad to see only one person is able to work the mobile projects (and surprised) since mobile has been more and more a dominant platform.
I primarily use Media Center for Audio with mpc-hc as my video player.

Wish I had the time and energy to contribute code to the apps. The only thing I can really do is buy stuff here and there for support.

I wouldn’t mind purchasing a ‘jremote3’, at a premium, for both ios and android to get them updated a bit; they really need some love.

While many of the development concepts used in JRemote were still very similar to what has become the standard today, the implementation was not. JRemote used a dozen or so third-party libraries, many of which had disappeared over the years - often because Google had created something similar for every Android developer out of the box. It didn't take me long to decide that it would be better to start almost from scratch.

JRemote2 is born

JRemote2 was created practically from scratch. The only thing I did re-use is the UI design, for one I think as a starting-point it was solid, and it makes the app feel familiar.

Everything else is new. Not a single line of code was simply copied. JRemote2 is written in Kotlin instead of Java, which has a lot of advantages, including crash-safety and a faster turn-around on new features, and I used all new modern Android development concepts and libraries, based on Android JetPack, a toolkit from Google to make modern apps.

Audio and Video Playback now uses Google's ExoPlayer2, which is far more capable then the default MediaPlayer JRemote used previously, this means we can support lossless FLAC up to 192/32, including gapless playback. And its extensible, which might allow us to add more native formats, and add some core DSP features like Volume Leveling in the future.

One key focus of JRemote2 is to make it reliable over all else, and hopefully we can deliver on that. Features that do get built-in should function reliably, and the app should ideally never crash.

Trans-coding?

So I've finally ditched my Roon install due to lack of mobile streaming away from home..

and returned to JRiver which I used to have installed in the pre_mobile phone era !

So im using the Jremote2 fantastic app and listening in the car or walkabout. the big question I have, is the audio being transcoded to a lower bitrate for my phone? how exactly do i alter the quality settings of this..As i listen to FLAC files and looking to get an external DAC for my mobile to use with IEMs , how can I be sure 100% im in a bit perfect condition? excuse my ignorance , only just installed within 48 hrs, so still learning the steep curve.. I welcome your response.. thanks

Try enabling the Use native audio format option in JRemote2, it works great for me with all my FLAC files playing natively without conversions. Also in MC's Options > Media Network > Client Options > Audio Conversion you can set Conversion to Don't convert audio if you want to avoid it completely.

As Awesome Donkey said, enable "Use native audio" in JRemote2. It'll avoid conversions for FLAC, ALAC, AAC, MP3, and OggVorbis.

Note that no option inside MC will actually influence this behavior, Media Network options do not control JRemote2 streaming behavior.

Thanks... cant believe how well this works.. no buffering when im driving.. hence wanted to double check.. yes I have use native audio checked..

So will go shopping for a usbC dac next..

As my IEMS need a little bass boost.. is there a way of using DSP option, prior to getting it on JRemote? also can you apply (slightly off topic) DSP to other streams, or is it only for the Server itself?

On my Pixel 3a phone using JRemote2, I kept getting a notification ding every time playback started and when I pressed play/pause or changed tracks. I am running Android 12.

To fix this, I changed the following:

Phone Settings > Notifications > App Settings > JRemote2 > Disable "Other: JRemote"
