Hello all.

First post here. Sorry, but this will be a JRiver session for dummies...

I have a WD MyCloud that I am using as a NAS. I have been using Plex to control my music library on the NAS from my iPhone 8. I’m not happy with Plex at all.

Can I use JRiver setup on a laptop, and use a remote app on my iPhone to control my library from the NAS?

My main issue with Plex is that I lose my file tags. I have no idea what a great majority of my music files are until I click on them to play. They are labeled as “untitled”.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, you can use a phone to control playback of music that's on your NAS.

In MC, you can import the files.  See the wiki topic on Import.

Then you install a remote control or use Panel on your phone.  Connect it to your laptop.  See Remotes and Media Network on the wiki.

Thanks for the response, Jim.

I left a piece of the puzzle out.

I will be using the remote app to play music on my music streamer via WiFi using Chromecast.

I want to try to keep a computer out of the loop. Is there a way to put JRiver on the NAS and control it from my iPhone? I don’t want to have to have my computer on to play music.

See, I told you it would be a session for dummies...

We don't have a version of  MC that runs on a NAS.  A NAS is a computer.

The IdPi would work and it's under 10 watts.

You could set up MC on a Windows PC first, to see if it worked for you, then substitute an IdP for the PC.  Both work with Panel on a phone.

Ok. Now I’m lost. (Remember the dummies reference)

I have MC22 still on my laptop where I used to have it connected via usb to my DAC. I can update this to the latest version.

So I can get MC on my laptop to recognize my NAS?

Where does the JRiver id come in? Do I download it on my laptop as a separate thing?

And i assume there is an app I’ll have to download on my iPhone?

If I’m going to be successful in this setup, it’ll have to be explained step by step.

Thanks again for your help!

Don't pretend you're a dummy.  You can read can't you?  Wiki topics on Media Network, Remotes, Panel, etc.

MC on a laptop should be able to see the NAS with Windows Networking as long as Windows sees it.  Just import from the location where you find the NAS.  Read what blgentry said here:  https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,111194.msg768496.html#msg768496

Start by trying to importing, then use Panel to play.

Step by Step is what Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire did.
