The impossible question (mpc functionality)
« on: January 22, 2003, 11:48:28 am »

I belong to the race of impatient souls.

I somewhat balance this up with awe and deep respect for what you guys have to develop, deal with, and the incredible amount of overview you have to possess in the development process.

So I can boil it down to this:

Is it possible for you (matt/nikolay) to give a hint as to when we can expect mpc to become functional again in the new unicoded MC?

Are we talking next build or three, or in a month or so..

Jesper.

listening to: The impossible dream, Elvis presley, in mpc format, on MC 9.0.89

Hi Xstatic,

I too, belong to the race of the mpc deprivated souls !
But there's good news as Steve and the JRiver crew is now working on this issue.

Don't worry Jesper, mpc will play again loud and clear on MediaCenter !

Some progress this week.

The newest MPC decoding source isn't working right yet though.  We'll see what we can do next week...

So what are the chances that this week will bring us mpc in v.9?

Good.  I need to shore up my APE tagging to work with APE v2 tags, and then the plugin is ready for beta.  Sometime soon...

The Foobar2000 develper has added APE2.0 support to MP3 in his player.  All of the "ID3v2 Is Evil" people over at HA Forums are practically foaming at the mouth, they're so excited about it.  Any chance of that becoming an option in MCs MP3 plugin?

I read that the other day at his download site. Just out of curiosity, would the tags be ignored in a portable player? My instincts say yes. Files would probably play, but would come up blank with the display.

Yeah, AFAIK, the Foobar MP3 decoder is the only one that reads APE2.0.  Any other decoder, hardware or software,  should skip them.

Okay, I give up.  What's MPC and how does this functionality affect me?

Kurt,

MPC is another codec. Another (lossy) format to compress music in the same way as MP3 or OGG does.
It is considered by many one of the best lossy compression format, definitely better than MP3.
The other advantages are gapless encoding and decoding (very good for live performances) and a pretty fast encoder.

For now, there is no MPC plugin for MC9 (well from 9.088 ). You can then understand the frustration of some people with large collections of MPC files. All the other major formats (MP3, APE, OGG, WMA) can be used with the current version of MC9. In short if you don't have any mpc files, or don't intend to use this format, the current problems with mpc plugin does not affect you at all.

Hope this helps,

Christian

Matt,
I hope this coming week will make it to mpc?

Or will the mystery work that Jimm announced in the "no build tonight" thread affect the mpc plugins?

The two most important things for me are MPC and ASIO support, since I got the M-audio Revolution 7.1, and both are broken. Well right now even direct sound. After playing few songs, MJ closes and vanishes. I got to increase the buffer in ASIO because the DSP equalizer was fainting on me. Saint Matt, please fix this isues. In the name of the father, the son and the holly s...... Amen. ;D
