Something's unstable
« on: February 29, 2004, 12:35:56 pm »

 :'(
I am sorry to tell you, but....
I have NEVER, NEVER seen such a kind of unstable software as MC. I can NEVER, NEVER work longer than 30 minutes with it without a crash! And I am doing only common things with MC...

And please, please don't say that it is caused by my system: I'm am running heavily loaded software as Adobe's Photoshop and Premiere Pro, and they have never crashed till so far!

I am running iTunes together with MC, iTunes didn't crash 1 time!

These are my records with MC: 3 min 14; 14 min 55; and 14 min 10.... doning common tasks.... crash.... Repeating the same task after starting MC again... no problem!

Sorry!

This is beta, but it has to be something different about your system than the majority, since the majority do not have these issues.  It could still be an MC bug, who knows, but whatever it is, its rare for a few users.  How about posting your sytem info in case anyone has any ideas?

Unfortunately, that doesn't prove the system is stable.

These kinds of problems can be hard to track down, but crashes are often hardware related.

Describing what you're doing might help.

Are you using a plugin when it crashes?

I'm also experiencing multiples crashes. I've noticed that when it crashes the most is when I'm editing tag information and there is a track change at the same time.  I'm running MC with 8sec fades between tracks. The tracks that I'm editing the tags on are not the ones being played (cross-mixed).

Later.

I have experienced crashes for a long time too.

I would really welcome an automatic reporting system for crashes, so JRiver would have good statistical data on how many people experience crashes, what they were doing at the time, what sections of the application it occurs in, and so on.

I think people respond really poorly when told that crashes could be hardware or driver related, since those are issues that are very difficult to identify and resolve.  Having statistical data on what's going on would go a long way towards helping the environment.

I agree an automatic crash reporting system would help.

OTOH, I've been using MJ/MC since version 7 and rarely does it crash.  In fact, MC beta 10.0.74 has been running continuously for better than 2 weeks without closing it and I've been using it daily for hours at at time doing a wide variety of tasks.

More than likely its a driver issue somewhere.  Video drivers are very prone to cause such crashes. Definately update those.  Software conflicts are a big culprit also. Try shutting down everything (including system tray apps) and use MC for awhile..  If it doesn't crash then you know it's a confilct somewhere and you'll just have to narrow it down one at a time.

If you're going to report a crash, at least give us a clue.  Version you're using and OS would be a minimum.  Better is to copy your system info from MC help and paste it here.

But crashes, especially bad crashes, are often hardware related or a bug in a driver (or the OS).

Same issue with my MC being unstable. I'm not playing any music only importing/cleaning files.  I don't have other heavy applications open or in the background.

If you experience a crash, try to isolate what you're doing.  Often it's a certain file or sequence of events.

General, random instability is often hardware related.

If you can ever reproduce a crash, please let us know and it'll be fixed shortly.

I updated my MC to v.10 last night and so far things have been perfect. The strain on my processor I was experiencing before, now is not an issue.  Importing/cleaning of files runs smoothly.

Is there an ongoing "wishlist" thread?
