OT- Microsoft Anti-Spyware App Available
« on: January 06, 2005, 09:07:48 am »

We all like playing with beta software and we spend lots of time on the 'Net.

Just thought maybe some people would like to take a look at this.

And why don't you go find it on a Microsoft site?
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/default.mspx

I get software where I get it. Easier.

No.

In a few weeks they will ask to get some $ for it. They work for it, so nothing to complain so far.

But for the moment I keep my free solution.

Color me impressed. This thing manged to clean a PC that Adaware, Spybot and HijackThis all couldn't. I especially like the autoupdate feature and the real-time protection. Plus the advanced tools are nice to have all in one package like this.

Hi Doof,

Details please. Was this a pretty sick PC, or did it just remove a few cookies that others didn't find.

Thanks

In case you didn't know, Microsoft aquired this software from Giant Software Company.  A good article about  the acquisition and the software is available here: http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/ms_antispyware_preview.asp.

A warning though: The site is completely Pro Microsoft.  If you're in for a good laugh read how incredible WMA is and how much superior it is to MP3 and AAC here http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/msn_music.asp.  Nevermind he's just going to transcode it to 160kbs mp3...  I decided to try MSN Radio after his recommendations.  I quickly cancelled...  WMA at 64kbps hurts to listen to!  To be fair, Rhapsody uses 128kbps WMA 8 and sounds pretty darn good to me.

Hi Doof,

Details please. Was this a pretty sick PC, or did it just remove a few cookies that others didn't find.

This was a very sick PC. Trend Antivirus kept catching a trojan trying to install spyware on the system. The problem was, I could never find the file that it was laying the blame on. Meanwhile popups would continue to show up. I determined that there was some form of malware that was trying to connect to some site and download this trojan, but I could never find it. Adaware initially cleaned off a bunch of things, but none were the culprit. Spybot found a few more but still none were the culprit. HijackThis didn't show me anything that I could make sense of (most likely somebody with a little more experience with it could have found this one). When I tried MS ASW, it found a bunch of new things, and it's built in advanced tools (namely the process viewer and system explorer) helped me locate two different running processes that would continually re-add themselves to the run entries in the registry.

Now with that said, it's pretty clear that there's nothing there that HijackThis and windows task manager couldn't have helped me with, if I had had a better idea of what to look for. But MS ASW helped me finally find the cause. For me, that's enough. :P

Never been to Belize. My focus for the last 2 years has been Florida cave diving. :) Going back for a couple weeks at the end of the month, actually. :)

I tried it and it found several things that AdAware missed.
The cool tools are real handy, too.
But then there's this : "The software will stop running on July 31, 2005."
Ah, well.

It's a beta, it will time out. Now, will they charge for it? They could. But I'd think with all the security problems they will either do it for free or bundle it with their upcoming anti-virus package.

Actually, I'd pay a small subscription fee for this.

Works well, is laid out nicely, doesn't have an impact on my system.

I agree with GHammer, I would pay a small subscription fee for it as well.

I have been running Norton AV, Ad-Aware, Spybot & Spyblaster for quite a while. I installed MS ASW and it found 5 instances of malware that all the other apps didn't.

Suggestion Doof, if in this situation, I suggest you go to the fora at cexx.org and post your HiJackThis log there, they will advise you.

I Think It Would Be Best For Microsoft To Include This For Free, Since They Allow Holes In The Products They Create For This Type Of Abuse Of A Users Computer That Degrades Performance And Security Issues.

I can buy that. :)

However the ease of use of the OS and power and design of the programs that come free with it should be an embarassment to Bill Gates.  OSX does NOT feel like a patched together product.

But the problem is most of the compelling software that comes out is for the windows platform. If there are any other programs that are good on other platforms they usually migrate over to windows.

So you get stuck with windows like it or not. This may change if Linux gets to be more prevalent but not for another 5 years at least. If you want low(er) risks from spyware, viruses etc sure, Mac or Linux even. I have worked on Macs before OSX, and i readily admit they are a nicer platform to work on.

Sorry for the tangent there.

I'm quite impressed to hear that M$'s product found things that adware & Spybot missed. Were there many false positives ?

Linux has been aval since the late 80's early 90's I don't see it taking over the market anytime soon.

Maybe if apple changes there ways it could do better
