Hello... Currently when you use this, all of the files are copied into 1 folder. Can this be changed to allow you to put it in a folder structure like Artist - Album?
It could be a great function, but currently it is a pain.

If I use it it drops all of my files into 1 folder, So if I have a track that is on more then 1 album, it will not copy.

I had asked for this awhile ago, but the thread got lost somewere...... This seems easy enough?

I agree with this one.... Right now, the Copy Disk File feature is really limited in its usefulness...

You can set up a psuedo-handheld device as a folder somewhere and sync to it. The sync ability can create appropriate folder structures. Admittedly, this is a lot of overhead for a simple copy, so I'll lend my support for this request.

Sent my Acoustic Genre over to my sever via File Disc Copy. Eeek! No folders, just files!
No big deal but I would rather have Artist/Album folder structure.

I'm definitely in on this one!

For me to actually make this work, I have to rename Files from [Track #] - [Name] to [Album] - [Track #] - [Name] do the copy , Import, Rename the files back to [Track #] - [Name] annd select the path.

So this would definately save a lot of steps.

Here is a quick mockup of how I would like to have the options in the "Rename Files From Properties" tool:

I also added a drop-down menu to the Base Path dialog. It could store the previously used strings.

I've got this working really well here using a couple of expressions, one for filename and one for directories.

What I really need to make the rename tool complete (on top of the afore mentioned items) is for the 'base path' to accept expressions too. Then I'd be able to send different media types or genres to different drives and have them named correctly, simply by loading the dialogue and hitting the OK button.

I agree, Gamer. And it wouldn't seem too terribly difficult to implement. Alex B provided a good idea of what it could look like. This issue is keeping "copy disk file" from becoming a best-practice for track backup within MC.

I know that not everbody's requests see the light of day.... But this just seems like an easy thing to modify, and something that should have always been there. The Copy Disk File now is really useless depending on how people name there files.

I name mine [Track #]-[Name]
So, If I copy over all Rolling Stones, I get a window that says duplicate file, would you like to replace this with this.....

Syncback is a great backup program, but I wouldn't consider it as a solution. (I know you didn't mean that.)

We need an internal MC solution. We need this functionality for partial selections of the library. MC already has the needed functions in various separate tools. The functions should just be combined into a single tool.

I know there are programs that will do that, But there are other reasons I would use this.

Oh, this would have come in VERY handy this weekend.

This is what I have to do as a work around.

Rename Files to [Album]-[Track#]-[Name]
Copy Files to X
Rename Files to [Track #]-[Name] Make sure that I set the right folder structure.
Rename originals to [Track#]-[Name]

This may not be a big deal with a few files, But my Library is fairly big.

I don't get it, Is it actually that hard to implement??

hmm, I'll check this out.... It may work as a workaround..... But I don't copy all the files to the same place... So this is a bit of a pain.

The copy function is already there, Why is it a big deal to add the folder requirements?

Alex, pardon my catching up to the basics here. It seems to me that the virtual device is superior, or would be, if we can enable persistence. That is, when I eject my ipod, I still want to see it as an icon in devices, and I want to browse the contents as reported in the last sync. Similarly, my backup drives. I want to sync them using virtual devices, remove them, and still see them and browse them, until I select "Remove and Ignore". Is this currently doable?

As for different settings, MC seems to tolerate multiple virtual device that go to the same folder, so why couldn't you create a device for each setting? That is, unless there's no persistence . . .

Sorry, but there will be no more new features in Media Center 11. Media Center provides several ways to manage disk files. (My Computer, Move/Copy Disk Files, Rename From Properties, Virtual Handheld)

AlexB's enhancement proposal looks good to us. We'll see if we can do something like that for version 12.

However, this is not a function that works...

If I have a group of files that I want to copy, and I use this function it will overwrite any file that is the same. I keep all of my files named [Track#]-[Name]... Since Track 1 Song Battery, can appear on multiple albums as track 1, (This happens frequently in my Library) if I use the Copy function, I get a box that asks if I want to overrite the file....

As a temperary solution, can you allow MC to add a (1) to the file name if it's a duplicate name? That would allow me to use this function.

The function works as designed, although you may not agree with the design. We can revisit this in MC 12.

It's obvious that they're prepping for starting work on MC12 (and maybe even have been secretly working on it without releasing any builds yet).

For now, Gamer, I've been using the Virtual Handheld option. While AlexB's suggestion would be much more elegant, that method does work fairly well.

I tried the HH Option, It worked all right, but the cover art in the music file didn't transfer.
