Some thoughts on handheld conversion cache
« on: January 03, 2007, 06:30:12 am »

Hi,

first of all: MC12 looks neat and I am very glad on the handheld conversion cache.
But I have some issues with it:
Sometimes (esp. when MC terminated during synchronization before) the files on the device somehow won't get identified correctly on connection and any file already on the handheld will get re-converted. Wouldn't it be good, if the mechanism would work the following way:
  • When successfully converted, store conversion date, converted file name, conversion settings and any other relevant information somewhere in a conversion db.
  • When synchronizing, look whether file on handheld (identified by converted file name) is on device, if yes, look whether conversion settings and/or modified date of source file have changed. If yes, reconvert & upload. Maybe, if source file has changed, just identify whether relevant tags have changed in source resp. source file has been reimported due to any reason.
  • If file is not on device, look in cache, compare cache to original as above, (re)convert if necessary and upload...

Thanks, Marcus
