Best way to get cover art?
« on: February 05, 2007, 10:16:48 am »

I am pretty proud of myself, during the superbowl weekend i was bored and since it was like -10 degrees outside i decided to rip the remaining 200 discs in my cd collection.

Once i had everything ripped to 320br i made a new library in mc11 for retail cd's only and imported my 350 discs. I then in about 2 hours had everything correct for the tags.

After the game i went about to get the coverart, through mc11 internet interface with freedb i went out and snatched the cover art. It only found about 2/3rd's of my collection, i still am left with about 100 covers i need.

I have a wonderful canon scanner that works great with MC11 and by doing just 15 cover scans a night my remaining 100 discs that need covers would be done in a week but i am wondering if there is a better or faster way to get the cover art i need?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

to list all without coverart, type [image file]=[] into the search bar.
select a file in the list, right click, image>get from internet.
This function received some developement attention recently, making it soo much better than days of old.
Once you see it work satisfactorily, select all files and repeat, sit back and wait.

Any that don't have art after that will need to have their art tracked down manually.

Thanks for the answer Marko, questions:

1. Does this work in both MC11 and MC12, i am using MC11?

2. You mention files, i am trying to put the cover art in the album folders, does this
    mehtod do that?

3. What database does MC go out to, is ti stil freedb?

Thanks

One of the changes made early in MC12's development was the introduction of YADB coverart lookup. coverart found there has been uploaded by users of MC via the 'submit to internet' option. It's my understanding that these changes were also incorporated into MC v11.1

2. You mention files, i am trying to put the cover art in the album folders, does this

MC should save the coverart as per your settings at "Tools > Options > File Location > Track Images Location"

Thanks
TC  :)
You're welcome :)

The new YADB cover art database works only with MC12. MC11.1 does not contain the needed code.

To search manually try: walmart.com, Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de and AMG All Music Guide.com

I haven't tried this program, but it might do the job: http://louhi.kempele.fi/~skyostil/projects/albumart/

Check your spelling. Walmart maybe more limited to the more popular stuff, but the Amazon sites have been about 98% successful. With Amazon, choose the "music" catagory and put artist - album in the search box. Do not include the album year in your search or you'll get a lot of false negatives. If you want the largest image, select the album and then click on the image. I've probably downloaded 30 000 album covers from walmart and amazon. I only use AMG as a last resort as their images are too small (200x200). Walmart images are 500x500, Amazon mostly 300x300 but are getting more and more 500x500.

Excellent site. I missed that one. :)
I'm glad you like it  ;)          (although not really surprising)
BTW, feel free to contribute. You don't need a valid email addy to reg. Max filesize is 4 MB.
So let's summarize:
If you search manually for CA
#1 Cover-paradies
#2 Wal*Mart
#3 Google picture search  (no need to go to Amazon since they show up there and you can choose the best)
#4 rateyourmusic.com/  (you need to reg if you want to see the covers in full size, size varies from 280x280 to 1400x1400...it's worth a try)
#5 if you like brazilian music:   www.bossa.net
.
.
.
.
#6 AMG as a VERY last resort

That's my trail but still some rare covers are missing or @200x200 only. There is no "everything is available here" site around unfortunatly.

guess you are busy now re-downloading a few of your 30k covers, good luck  ;D

Nah, I'll replace the AMG covers as I come across them, there's prolly less than 50-100. All the rest were either 300 or 500's resized to 900x900 and perfectly acceptable.

A couple other sites that sometimes have good quality cover art:
http://www.buy.com
