Media Center 12.0.534 is available here
« on: September 22, 2008, 11:12:09 am »

This is the latest version of MC 12.0.  Any MC12.0 license will work with it.  Please post bugs here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.

This latest build (usually safe) of MC12.0 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/MC12/MediaCenter120534.exe

12.0.534 (9/18/2008)

1. Fixed: The cache building thread didn't clean up nicely if there was nothing to do.
2. Changed: Finnish and French DVB-T frequency tables are included in the DVB-T frequency file.
3. Fixed: Media Center could fail to detect an iPod in some cases.

12.0.533 (8/29/2008)

1. Fixed: Library Sync could crash in some cases.
2. Fixed: Pane tagging could crash in some cases.
3. Fixed: "AverTV Combo PCIe M780 tuner ATSC" TV device did not work.
4. Changed: Digital TV retry loading the generic Microsoft Network Provider if the Network-specific provider fails to connect.

12.0.532 (8/25/2008)

1. Changed: Tuned Radio playback algorithm to be less likely to focus in on a certain artist or genre during playback with little user input via skips.
2. Fixed: The license needed dialog could report that a trial had expired when there was still a valid trial period.
3. Fixed: The trial period could affect MC13 use as well.

12.0.531 (8/18/2008)

1. NEW: Added DirectSound channel modes "Hardware Direct (sound card chooses)" and "Do Not Specify Channels" to help with surround sound routing on some hardware.
2. Fixed: In rare cases, quickly switching tracks could cause a dead-lock.

12.0.530 (8/8/2008)

1. Fixed: Pasting using right-click menu > Edit > Paste would not honor the right-click position.
2. Fixed: Pressing 'Enter' in a list could fire two times, causing possible strange behavior.
3. Fixed: Clicking in a thumbnail view could fail to do range selection properly if the stack icon was the first column in details view.
4. Fixed: If the main JRiver tools library was reused by a program without being completely unloaded it could crash. (could cause shell extension crashes)
5. Fixed: Editing the last renamed / created file could unintentionally change the filename in rare cases.
6. Fixed: Nested keywords that reused the same base-path could confuse Theater View.

Another crash while syncing with handheld - this time my handheld was my local harddisc. There was about 1600 files to sync with a few lame conversion (2 processes). The syncing finished overnight but there was a message box that MC crashed.

After applying this update, all of the audio is completely distorted and unusable. Is there a way to downgrade to a previous version other than reinstalling?

Update!! - If I select Wave Out instead of Direct Sound, life is good once again. Seems like a bug with Direct Sound whatever it might be.

It's working.  FTP is probably blocked by your firewall.  You can substitute HTTP for FTP.  Here's an HTTP link:

The changelog doesn't show any fixes for the various tagging problems in MC I (and others) have reported. Are these problems going to be fixed?

I just converted from 12.465 (pre stacks) to 12.534.

I want to use stacks for sync to 2 ipods only.

My set up is
to use a specified cache dir
convert to mp3 256k fixed rate
   convert unsupported formats

When running a sync, all ape and flac files are converted to mp3 and copied to the ipod as expected.

However, only the converted flac-mp3 files are copied to the cache dir , converted ape-mp3 files are not copied to the cache.

I am hoping this problem is something I am doing wrong and not a bug, but since I can't get it to work even in a logical manner, I'm reporting it as a bug.

Suggestions and/or new bug fixes will be appreciated.

I had no trouble getting the cache to work as expected in 465, but I don't like being behind on versions.

-----------

2008-10-16

I managed to clear the trouble by running an "auto-import", which then imported thousands of duplicates.  I deleted the dups and reran the "auto-import" and now the stacks for handhelds seems to be working as expected.

I still think there is some kind of bug which allowed my library to get corrupted or whatever in the first place.

Hopefully, whatever caused the problem will not happen again.

Bugs:

1. When editing multiple fields in the file list, the topmost row becomes covered by the column header (this one's been around for about 6 months).

2. Page Down skips to the next audio track by default in MC; makes uses a remote with page down to browse by pages ....not so easy. Page down should be ...page down.

3. Anyway to get the option to change font color under tiles etc. , instead of having to edit the xml file.

A long-standing tagging bug, which still occasionally shows up

Rename files from Properties: [Artist] - [Album] - [track #] - [Name]

will sometimes create file names: Grateful Dead - American Beauty - 00 - 01 Box Of Rain
which reveals itself as an incomplete album after using
Fill Properties From Filename: [Artist] - [Album] - [track #] - [Name]
since the tracks are now no longer sequentially numbered.

I have never been able to figure out what causes this or where the 00 comes from, but have seen this at times since MC10 and it still exists. Finally I am certain it is of no cause of my own, so I thought I'd post it in case it lives on into MC13.

Another similar tagging error:

Rename files from Properties: [Artist] - [Album] - [track #] - [Name]

sometimes returns: [Artist] - [Album] - [Artist] - [Album] - [track #] - [Name]
Grateful Dead - American Beauty - Grateful Dead - American Beauty - 01 - Box Of Rain
-OR-
[Artist] - [Album] - [track #] -[Artist] -[Album] -[track #] -[Name]
Grateful Dead - American Beauty - 01 -Grateful Dead -American Beauty -01 -Box Of Rain

The strangest thing about these if most often they only occur to a SINGLE track within an album which the other tracks are properly tagged. If the entire album was done at the same time, then why the odd one track?

Bug while exporting playlists: some "extended characters" aren't exported correctly.

Example: Shantel - Disko Partizani (2007), Track #5, "Şuşuleker" becomes "Susuleker" in the M3U file, breaking the link of course (the filename is "Şuşuleker.mp3"). I'm viewing the M3U file with an Unicode aware text editor (UltraEdit). Another track called "Šota" is exported correctly. The tracks play fine in MC, and the filenames on disk (W2K3 Server) correspond to the filenames in MC's library, so the problem is in the "Export to Playlist"-function.

It would be nice to get a definitive answer whether this and other MC12 bugs are going to be fixed, or not.

I have 43 wav files on my system including some recent vinyl archives that haven't yet been converted to .ape, none will play on my system.

They open in WMP & VLC. Still fails in MC after reboot.

Maybe  the HRx wav file posted about here in the forum may be suffering the same fate.

Does MC13 play wav files ?

"BWF" wav files play in MC13 but not 12; actually I can't get any wav file to play in 12.534

Can anyone care to at least verify if it's just me ? ?

Just tried a wav file in MC12.534 . . . . it works for me
(although this was a generic wav file, and I do not know what a "BWF" wav is)   ?

See HRX post in MC12. Alex said they are taggable wav files i.e. "Broadcast Wav Format"

Thanks for checking on your machine. I have no idea what's going on.

Whenever I rename files from properties MC is leaving temp files behind for all the image files that were renamed to a new location. It names the temps as:

~!~MCTEMP~!~
~!~MCTEMP~!~ (1)
etc

Yet the image files are also moved to their new location and properly named.   ?

FLAC tagging does not working properly for the Date (Year) field. The field is set to  YYYY/MM/DD instead of just YYYY:

My work PC is having a problem with a CNN MMS stream.

When I try to detach display, the video window goes blank.

I tried again to detach display and MC closed without warning.

Hoping it's "safe" to post this here given the circumstances i.e. works in MC13 but not MC12 with same filters/settings.

I have a newish (Oct) version of FFDShow installed.

MC12 settings:

1. Nvidia DVD decoder/FFDshow Audio decoder (direct sound output)
2. Zone set for DirectSound (Realtek HDMI)
3. Enhanced Video Renderer

DVD (ifo) playback error due to failure to connect to FFDShow audio decoder

MC13 settings:

1. Nvidia DVD decoder/FFDshow Audio decoder (direct sound output)
2. Zone set for DirectSound (Realtek HDMI)
3. Enhanced Video Renderer

DVD (ifo) playback successful

Notes:

I was using these settings the day before last in MC12; after awhile things just break in 12. I'm also noting gui rebuild failures when using visualizations in full screen and then "closing display".
I came home with MC12 paused in Zone 2 and stopped playback, switched to zone 1 noted above, and pressed play. Got the DVD failure message and a black screen, no MC & no Windows. WIN key on keyboard brings up taskbar really fast but I'm stuck in some kind of dead zone, no MC and no Windows. Right click comes up but no progress bar for MC, can't switch views to theater or normal mode. I switch back to Zone 2 and press play then stop which brings MC out of the mystery mode.
I have also noted in the past, if Theater Mode is left on, I would see a failure to build 3d device error after some time (overnight). All of this and my reported exception:275 errors, I believe, point to some corruption or conflict with the ATI driver. I'll do my part and try a fresh install and read up on this, but I'm hoping someone can chime in or take a look at this possability and we solve this strange behavior once and for all.

EDIT - I just opened MC12 while playing the DVD in question in MC13 for about 15 minutes. Now MC12 builds the filter graph. I double checked and it seems that "video" playback was set to EVR, but DVD playback was set to Automatic and using VMR9 for MC12. But it works suddenly with VMR9 and also EVR.

File list (for Tiles) drop-down menu needs a right-click. Mouse-over or left-click won't drop it down.

Using Library Server over WAN I'm observing large bursts of sound between each play of uncompressed audio. I optioned the setting for aggressive reset to no avail. Doesn't seem to happen over LAN. Any ideas? Same version on two XP PCs.

I wish you guys would fix this (reported over a year ago and still happens in this version):

Using Tabs and having an iPod (Nano 1G) attached, MC12 redraws (refreshes) the currently displayed tab with data from an inactive iPod view contents tab.  There seems to be some interval this happens on (about 1 to 2 mins it appears).

So, if you have 3 tabs created with Playing Now in tab #1, Recently Imported playlist in tab #2 and iPod details in tab #3...and, for me, Playlists in Action Window:

When you are viewing tab #2, all of the sudden the tab #2 display contains the tab #3 data...tab focus did NOT change.  So, you can cover up MC12 with another app (Firefox for example) and come back to MC12 and it will redraw tab #2 correctly.  Or, you can just click away from tab #2 (say on tab #1) and click again on tab #2 and it's redrawn correctly.  This only happens with an iPod device attached and viewed in a tab (inactive tab).

Again, I reported this over a year ago...I hope you can fix it someday and/or at least fix it in MC13.

I'm not able to reproduce this using MC 13.  Since it contains several tab optimizations, you might want to take a look.

[OK, MY BAD.  DIDN'T SEE THE IPOD CHECKBOX OPTION TO CORRECT THIS.  MUSTA CHANGED IT DURING AN UPGRADE.  THANKS FOR A GREAT PRODUCT THAT (STILL) WORKS.]

I see a new and unwanted change in iPod synching behavior:  I have long relied on MC to move my updated iPod song ratings back to my MC library.  New MC behavior is that any changes to song ratings made on the iPod are lost on synch to the mother ship.  My use case:  I travel with my iPod, especially my 'new music' library, and mark songs on iPod with ratings as I hear them.  I have always liked the feature that takes those iPod song ratings back to my library.

MC still moves song ratings from MC to iPod without error.  It's the other direction I now miss:  taking iPod song ratings back to my MC library.
Can this be changed, please?  My MC/iPod combination is much less useful to me now.
Thanks.  Love the product.  Use it constantly.

Occasionally, during operation of MC12, the McCafee virus scan comes up with a popup indicating a "Exploit-ObscuredHtml" virus in the "Media Center 12\Library\field(episode url).jmd.tmp" file.
Any idea about the reason and/or possible ways to solve the problem?
Tks for an answer

Choosing Album>Details to return some stats (why MC ever had this function torn out is beyond me), Print List seems to return unique albums but export to HTML will return every track on an album. How about just providing a statistics function to easily bring up and export number of unique albums or other useful stats?

I created a new library on my laptop to use with a portable drive for travel.

Upon returning to my standard library I find the Auto-Import folders set to the portable drive rather than the original settings. Apparently the settings are not Library-specific and are universally applied to all libraries.

Is there a way to work around this as it creates problems for me?

Thanks

*edit - it appears that this issue has been resolved in MC13, but as I still wish to use MC12 until MC13 is out of Beta and fully stable. In the meantime, is there possibly a 'work-around' for MC12?

No way to configure Last.fm plugin (Configure button doesn't show up ... only Show & Hide). This is typical for all the Interface plugins. I got lucky on a Hide click once and was able to configure. Can't get back in to see if login info and file types stuck. I don't think it's an XP X64 display issue.

Must have got it right though as the submissions are showing up @ last.fm. Nice plugin there Rhino & JR.

Once you click on 'SHOW' in the Plug-In's menu, close it and go to the 'Services & Plug-Ins' branch of the Tree pane and in the LastFM branch you will see 'Options'

You must have found it once as the submissions are showing up @ last.fm.   ;)

D'oh! ... ok ... no bug ... thanks Amy May. I brought it up exactly as I described though ... which programmatically can't happen except that it did  ?. Most of the entries are from Amarok and the built in FM plugin. Only recently became aware of a MC plug. I am xen-uno there. Chalk this up to a false positive ... delete or move at your discretion JR.
