Try to find the device in the Device Manager and remove it.

I would if I could but it is simply is not there... at all.

There is nothing called eHome under Device Manager (even with Hidden Devices showing).

Could it be called something else?

Could it be under another Device name.

Should it be under USB Controllers?

I also looked under Human Interface Devices and it is MIA there too.

It should be under USB Controllers.
What OS are you running under?
Can you try the receiver on another machine?

Do you have intellimote installed?  That program caused problems with mine.

It simply is NOT there.

Win 7 Professional 64-bit Desktop, single stand-a-lone, no network computer.

Have no idea what intellimote is.

Don't have access to another machine.  Even if I did, that would not resolve the missing eHome problem on my machine.

Thanks;

Quite true, but it might help point out whether it's just a dodgy box... was just an idea.

Btw I think your high up there in the non active but active accounts. 6 Years of non activity is quite impressive.  I take it retirements going well ;-)

Yes, I LOVE retirement.  LOTS of time to do all those little things that I never had time for before such as resolving this crazy little eHome problem.

I think the remote and IR receiver may be OK, just a missing eHome.  Now, if we can just figure out how to get it back I suspect all will than be well.

I installed the latest complete Catalyst package just two days ago.  Did not help.

There was one curious item in the video driver package... Folding@Home.

I tried it both ways with and without Folding@Home.  Still no go with the missing eHome problem.

Does anyone know how to re-install eHome without completely re-installing Win 7?

The eHome drivers are part of Win7.  Folding@home looks like a science project from Stanford.  You could uninstall it if you haven't.

Nothing under HID in Device Manager?

Thanks for helping, Chriz.

Just the normal stuff but no eHome.

I also tried removing MCE which also removed the C:\Windows\eHome folder.

Rebooted.

Reloaded MCE which brought back the C:\Windows\eHome folder but still no eHome under Device Manager. I than ran the C:\Windows\eHome\mcupdate.exe file which is suppose to also fix the problem but again it did not in this case.

A couple of suggestions on a few other web sites said that these sometimes cured the problem but not this time.

This seems to be a pretty major problem as I am reading about it all over the place.  Seems like MS really messed up this time around.

Most strange.

Hi, i would like to get one remote but it will probably get stopped from the custom services and i will have to travel quite a distance and pay extra cash to pick it up. Would it be possible to send it as a gift/sample so as to avoid this?
Thanks and best regards,

Using a disc image, I restored my computer to a time just after a clean first install of Win 7 Pro and looked for eHome... non to be found in Device Manager.  This was one month before I got my remote from JRiver.

This also leads me to some questions about eHome...
1: When I removed MCE from my Win 7 Pro install, the c:\Windows\eHome folder disappears and it reappears when re-installing MCE.
2: If MCE is controlling eHome how would the remote work without MCE on XP Pro?
3: Is eHome supposed to be in Device Manager on lets says a Win XP Pro with no MCE?
4: Is eHome already present in Device Manager on a system without the JRiver remote or is eHome installed only when the remote is first plugged in?

Can someone add a screen shot of their Device Manager showing eHome so I know exactly what I am looking for?

I have been working on this problem for three whole days and have scoured the web for answers.  It appears there are many others in the same boat with me but to date no one has come up with real answers to why many remotes simply do not work on some computers but work just fine on others.

Thanks again;

Windows MC and JRiver MC can coexist.  MC14 has a setting that allows you to disable WMC if it interferes.  It's in Theater View settings.

When MC disables MCE what happens to eHome?

What actually determines if eHome will be in Device Manager or not? MCE? The remote?

Reason I ask is eHome seems to be the one common dominator in my remote not working as eHome is no where to be seen and it seems that everyone that has a working remote also has eHome in Device Manager.

Ah, THANK you Sooooo much, ChriZ.

That was what I was hoping to see and is exactly what I have been looking for.

Now, do you happen to know how to manually add it to Device Manager??  THAT would be absolutely wonderful.

Thanks again;

I found an Unknown device under USB Controllers; it has a Code 43 error and Windows has stopped it.

Anyone know what Code 43 is?

I am thinking this may be our eHome that I have been looking for.

I un-installed the device, un-installed MCE, pulled the remotes USB plug and re-booted the computer, the device was gone.

I than re-installed MCE and plugged the remote back in... same Unknown device error code 43.

Can this mean a defective IR receiver?

Any ideas?

Anything is possible, but you shouldn't be uninstalling and reinstalling WMC.  Just leave it alone.

Unplug the receiver.  Remove the suspect device again.  Then watch carefully when you plug the receiver back in.  You should see it being installed or if not, you'll see an error message.

Does WMC see it?

Turns out the Unknown Device is another problem and not related to eHome or the remote.

Upon unplugging and re-plugging in the remote USB connector what shows up under Device Manager is..
USB Serial Converter.
Windows reports that it is the latest driver and is working correctly.

So, why no eHome?

No, MC14 does not see the remote either; that was what originally prompted me to look here for answers.

MC + WMC definitley won't be able to use it until it's showing up correctly in device manager.

Dumb question, have you tried different USB ports?

Question;

As USB Serial Converter is showing up when I plug in the IR Receiver, could that mean the IR Receiver is being incorrectly detected as something else?  If so, could that also mean a bad receiver?

Just a thought.

Is it a release version of the OS?

Try this
If you are dead certain that the USB Serial adapter is the receiver,
x. Right click on it in Device Manager
x. Select update driver software.
x. Browse my computer for driver software
x. Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
x. Untick show compatible hardware
x. Move to Manufacturer Microsoft
x. Select Model eHome Infrared receiver.

We occasionally need to do this with work machines and mice... no idea why.

Mr ChriZ; Your are a GOD... Sort of.

That worked in finding eHome and putting it in Device Manager.

However (yes; there is always one, isn't there?) it still does not work even after showing up in Device Manager.

When I selected Model eHome Infrared receiver, Windows balked and said there was a compatibility issue and it was not recommended to install it.  I did so anyway. It now shows up in Device Manager.

I updated the driver through the Internet which took OK, but when I look at eHome it says there is a Code 10 error.

I looked up Code 10 on the MS site and it is basically either a software or hardware compatibility issue.  One of the suggestions was to run the MS Win 7 Compatibility Advisor which I did; it showed all software and hardware to be totally compatibly.  However it does not test too many programs as the list was rather short.

This is getting very old very fast and I my be loosing my patience with this issue.

Why can't things just work?

I would hate to be in a hospital and have my life depend on this kind of hardware.

But, I still want to resolve it.

Sooooo... where to go from here?

One other thing, two days ago I did a complete clean install of Win 7.  I checked that MCE was working and went into Device Manager; yep, you guessed it, NO eHome.

I had no other programs installed, just the clean Win 7 install.

I've found someone with a similar issue in an old forum post
http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/p/12236/69152.aspx#69152

They also see the receiver as "usb serial converter"

I'm out of ideas.

I am going to try to use it on another computer when I can get to it. It is exactly like mine; same motherboard, video, processor, memory, HDTV Tuner (ATI 650) and operating system.

It is across town at a friends house.  I built both computers about two weeks apart.

So give me a few days and I will let you know.

Is this no longer for sale? On the link to purchase the remote, it says it Temporarily Unavailable.

Our supplier is out of stock.  We're trying to find an alternate.  Sorry for the delay.

We've found another source.  All pending orders were shipped yesterday.  We're accepting orders again.   I apologize for any inconvenience.

I have a question, will any Windows Media Center remote with a IR receiver work with Media Center 14? I have my eye on this one, I wanna know if it will work basically the same way.

I am considering to buy this remote, as I may need to replace my current computer cabinet (with buildin IR), with a new and smaller one. But I have a couple of questions before :-)

1) How does the blasters work? Can the IR Transmitter and the blaster be used to relay signals from other remotes? Reason is that I want to hide my reciever and Cable box, but don't expect to be able to configure the control (while making usage intuitive to my wife) for both of them.

2) I have a reciver with a IR Link input/output. Would it be possible to serial connect the reciever and use the blaster for another unit?

3) Earlier it was mentioned that the remote cannot wake from off state. But isn't there a wake from usb feature that has started to be implemented on motherboards? Would the transmitter be able to support that?

4) I have a programable remote for my receiver, but currently I cannot program it to do the same thing as my IMON remote. Will this remote have the same problem?

All input would be highly appreatiated! :-)

Here's a setup page:
http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/Media_Center_Remote_Instructions

If MC is running, the relay could be made to work, but you'll need to view the instructions above for details.

The receiver's input/output link may be useful, but I don't know any details.  I would assume it just sends what it receives.

I can't answer your questions on waking from an off state.  I would recommend using "sleep" instead of off.

I don't understand the iMon question.

Please use a new thread on any questions that aren't directly related to the MC Remote.

Thanks for your input JimH.

I'll try to read up more, but could not find concrete answer to what I want to use it for.

About question 4): I currently have a remote that can "Learn" other remotes by directing them towards each other, and pressing button to program. But for some reason, this does not work on mye computer remote, which is of brand IMON. I have no idea about what kind of IR implementations there are, but since this seems like a regular IR (Not RF), I was a bit supprised that it did not work.

So to ask a more generic question, has anyone tried to "copy" button from Media Center Remote on other learning IR remotes? And did it work, of course... :)

I purchased a remote on 25/3/2010 - international order - but so far it hasn't arrived. Are there delays at the moment as this is more than the 2-3 weeks estimated delivery time.

Thanks

We're unable to track it.  It's probably stuck in customs.  The volcano probably didn't help.  It's not quite 4 weeks.  We'd like to wait a week or two to see if it shows up.  If it doesn't, we'll ship another one.

Good news: The remote has (finally) arrived

Bad news: I was charged £12.10 ($18.58) in customs charges. I enquired why and was told that the sender had not paid the proper customs levy and therefore I had to pay this sum to retrieve my goods. I was also told by customs that the sender is liable for this fee.

If you tell me how to do it I can attach a pdf scan or Jpeg of the customs charge as proof.

I would be most grateful if you would reimburse the customs fee to my account.

Regards

The import taxes are normally the recipient's responsibility.  I'm not sure where customs got that information.

i think that this is what your government says?

Customs Duty

If you're ordering goods from outside the EU, any Customs Duty must be paid by the recipient once the goods have arrived in the UK but before the goods are delivered.

When i ordered my goods you did not advertise the fact that the price was $48 plus and additional $18 for import duty!!

Yes I understand that the recipient is liable for the duty once it lands on these shores... but only when the correct duty has not been paid by the sender.

I have been a customer of J River for several versions of media centre and I sincerely hope that you are not trying to wriggle out of your responsibilities to your loyal paying customers

I'm sorry, but the taxes are from your country.  They are not our responsibility.  I have never heard of the seller pre-paying the taxes that are charged by the destination country, and we have shipped internationally frequently and for many years.

Here, for example, is what ebay says:

Quote
Generally, buyers pay additional costs such as duties, taxes, and customs clearance fees. For example, international rates may or may not include pickup and door-to-door delivery with customs clearance.

Perhaps you could do a little more homework before you accuse us of "wriggling" out of anything.

And perhaps you could alter your advert and wikki to say that the final cost to a customer in the UK will be $35 for the product + $13 shipping + $18 customs

Umm...how do I go about exchanging my remote.  The up arrow button seems to be amiss.  It does not "click" like the other buttons and is hypersensitive to the slightest touch.
Thanks.

That's a little unreasonable dildaly.  If you order anything in the UK from outside the UK there's a high chance you'll pay import tax if it's over £15 in value.
Something similar happens in many other countries, but the taxes vary across the world for what you'll pay.  Do you expect JRiver to keep an upto date list of every countries import taxes?  Other non UK Resellers certainly do not.
To make it even more complicated the way import duty works over here depends on the type of product that's being imported
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htm#1

There's no way JRiver could know all of this.

The best they could do is put a general warning that additional incurred import duties will be paid by the buyer... but would you really have picked up on this?

For reference I got lucky on my remote and didn't get charged anything with regards to import tax, maybe because the pound was doing better against the dollar and so the product value was lower back then.
