NEW: Movie Info
« on: September 06, 2011, 10:31:08 am »

You can use MC to lookup information for any full length movie.  Open Video/Movies*, then right click on a movie, and choose "Look up movie info".  You will have a choice of three sources:

TMDb

Wikipedia

Rotten Tomatoes

If you find these services useful, please consider a donation.

* If you don't find a movie where it belongs, open Video/Unassigned.  If you can find the movie there, edit the tag and change the tag called "Media subtype" to Movie.

I used it the other day when I ripped my first BluRay. For our particular movie Wikipedia had the most information. I previously used MyMovies but have found it a bit of a hassle to deal with. I also had to change the Sub Type to 'Movie' at the suggestion of another forum member.

Thanks very much for this useful feature!

Hey Rod,

I find that Wikipedia may have more info, but the quality of the info is not really what I'm looking for. e.g. I don't want to know that "xzy is an American horror movie directed by ZYX with a budget of $###. It was released to wide acclaim and took $@@@ in its first week at the box office."

At least not in the description field. I much prefer the movie synopsis that TMDB offers. I'll check the Rotten Tomatoes feature tonight.
Thanks very much to the crew for adding this.

Ah, sorry about that (I was one of the IMDb founders...); stepped down in 2001 so have no control any more.  Have queried the team on the current API and will feed back if I find anything helpful.

are there certain search rules we must use?
i tried updating tag for tv series Entourage

The filename is Entourage - Season 8 - EP 7, the media subtype is tv show, I chose tvdb but nothing pops up.

When i use autometa plugin (which uses tvdb) it fills in the info for me... Ideas please?
also when i goto TVDB website via browser the info is there (see link) http://thetvdb.com/?tab=episode&seriesid=74543&seasonid=465439&id=4105001&lid=7

Thanks

Thanks fitbrit. I'll take another look at the other two sources. I wouldn't mind that extra information if it also included the most pertinent. Also wonder if this may change quite a bit from movie to movie.

Don't think there is an option for TV Show lookup (would be nice though) - only movies.

I'm try to word this response without sounding like a total @$$, but didn't I buy this program already? Even if I wanted to donate, I looked around and didn't see a donation button/link anywhere.

Yeah, about that... Jim was talking about donating to the free meta-data lookup services such as Wikipedia, TMDB etc.

xtacbyme - just curious if you have access to a newer build, because the only options I have are the 3 mentioned by Jim in the opening post?

Clarification from IMDb: They still allow full access to datasets for non-commercial use, which isn't much use here and there's no public API anyway, just full datasets.

There are third-party sites that munge data:

http://deanclatworthy.com/imdb/

But I guess that's not a path to go down... as those sites might not be stable/around long.

I just did a bunch of testing on this feature. It's a very good first step towards metadata management.

Rick.ca has done an excellent job of covering the sophisticated features we need in the future. Let me suggest a few small improvements to the current Get Movie Info.

1) MC uses [Name] for it's search. If it does not find what you want, you can edit the search and try again. This all makes sense and works great. However MC then changes [Name] to the edited search value. This does not make sense. For example, I have [Name] set to "Aliens 2 (Aliens)" because I want to force the sort order for my Alien movies. I know Aliens is the correct name but I don't want to change it. I do understand this means I have to manually enter Aliens for the search.

2) I find some data from the various sources is useful and other data is just clutter. In the search result box there should be a tick box beside each piece of found data. We could clear the box for the data we do not want added to our library. MC would remember the choices and display them each time in case we wanted to change them for a specific movie. This would also provide a crude method for merging data from multiple sources. I could, for example, take the description from TMDb and the critic rating from Rotten Tomatoes.

3) We need a batch mode. For version 0.1 I envision selecting a block of movies, right clicking to Get Movie Info, being asked which data source I want to use, MC then goes and gets the data and displays an abbreviated summary table with small thumbnail, name, year, and director. I then untick any that are wrong in the table, and press go.

Found a small problem. It can be a challenge to get the correct artwork for 2 different movies with the same name if the preferred data source is TMDb. I think this is caused by the default thumbnail filename being [Name] and because TMDb does not append the year to the title.

Would be nice to fix this since TMDb seems to have the best artwork.

Examples include:

Casino Royale (1967 & 2006)
True Grit (1969 & 2010)
Italian Job (1969 & 2003)

Another small problem.

Budget and Gross Revenue (data pulled from TMDb) do not sort correctly. For example, $150,000,000 sorts smaller than $160,000.

17.0.25

Has something changed?

I was consistently getting nice large artwork from TMDb.

Now I consistently get small artwork from TMDb.

It's more than doubling my time to get info because I have to manually find artwork from a different source.

I just noticed this last night too.  I imported a couple new movies and it was pulling down 5kb or so thumbnails which really don't look all that good on a 50" plasma.  A couple of the movies I already had a folder.jpg for in the parent directory, so I copied that to the directory the file resided in, so that fixed that problem.  I was too lazy to hit up themovedb.org to download decent sized artwork though.  Glad to hear that it wasn't only me that experienced this.

I think TMDb changed their server a little.

In 17.0.28 and later:
Fixed: TMDb movie lookup was not always getting the highest quality image available.

Will there be a fix for MC 16 as well? I ran into the same thing this weekend.
