24-bit Audio For People That Aren't Old
« on: March 06, 2013, 02:49:32 am »

I have compiled a list of my 24-bit music, along with details about it, for anyone interested.

All my albums are from 24 bit sources.
Rips are done with DVD Audio Extractor (DVDAE)

Sources include:
Digital downloads from band websites.
Digital downloads from HDtracks.
MLP ripped DVD-Audio
TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, and PCM ripped from BD
PCM and DTS ripped from DVD

All of the above are lossless except for DTS from DVD rips.

Anyways...here is the music

All my 2 Channel 24 bit audio

All my 6 Channel 24 bit audio

Details:

MLP is ripped from the disc by DVDAE with anydvd disabled.

The sole purpose of this post is to help people find 24 bit music.
This is not the place to debate the benefits of 24 bit audio.
I have not included HDCD's or SACD's in my list but I'm not apposed to them.

Please share other HD albums you know of that could be considered part of the “not old” genre.

I don't get it ... subject seems to suggest young people, but the message speaks of 'genre', but you list beatles and Yes, which I would consider 'old' ... but what does it matter?

I'm not criticizing or anything, just wondering what you mean with that exactly.

I'm finding some nice suggestions in your list whch I will consider so, thanks for posting even if you consider me or my choice of music 'old'  :P.

Maybe I should have said "not too old" because I'm not really all that young.

The Yes album is included because Fragile was ahead of their time.
The Beatles Love album is included because its a modern remix of their music.
The Beatles USB apple is included because the Beatles are for all ages.

The "not old" thing is mostly a joke.
Maybe "24 bit Audio From Grunge/Alternative/Heavy Metal/90's Genres Generally Speaking" would have been more appropriate.

I own 53 hi res albums and they are all i can find in my taste of music. They were very difficult to find.
But there are thousands of hi res albums available.
Why don't i have interest in:
Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio, Cyndi Lauper, Rod Stewart, Chicago, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Barbra Streisand.
Because I don't listen to classical music and I wasn't alive when most this music was popular.
ie. I'm not old.

The music that was around when you were not alive, is the music that your favorite artists listened to, which inspired them to make their music.

Often they can't quite match the music that inspired them.

By limiting yourself to the above styles, you are limiting your own opportunity for enjoyment, and making your music taste into a sports team that you support ("Go Team!").

Some suggestions off the top of my head from dead guys:

The Doors
Miles Davis
John Coltrane
Mahavishnu Orchestra
King Crimson

PS  I also like NiN and I don't like any of the artists in your "don't have interest in" list...

My list may be limited but my collection is not. I have the entire Doors collection as well as King Crimson.
I have one Miles Davis CD. I don't have any John Coltrane or Mahavishnu Orchestra but will look into them.

I have some 24 bit Tom Petty, Pink Floyd, and Rolling Stones but didn't include them in my list because they conflicted with the theme.
I don't listen to the Doors enough to justify upgrading to 24 bit. I would consider getting Strange Days.
Same goes for King Crimson. They a few DVD-Audio in case you are interested.

Maybe I should have said "not too old" because I'm not really all that young.

I represent that "too old" remark!

Regardless, I think it's cool that you are sharing your collection, even if little of it is of interest to this old f**t.

Cheers,
Rod

Nice collection.

So what are peeps views on this HD audio?

I thought that half of these albums are from masters that already had their dynamic range shrunk and the other half are from sources that where not 192k/24bit throughout their processing (or some classical pieces that have a high noise floor).

I also thought that in DBX tests that the final post-processed audio was hit and miss whether the HD audio wins over the 44.1/48k 16bit of old and that in many cases the hardest part of the test was ensuring the loundness of the test tracks was identical.

[multi-channel audio is a different matter of course, and that is a welcome addition to the listening experience]

So are you guys resampling your own music or playing DJ? Otherwise I would have thought that spending on speakers, power amps and room acoustics is the safer route to better music.

That and trying to lobby the industry stop compressing the dynamic range recent releases...

The new Nine Inch Nails album called Hesitation Marks is available for pre-order from NIN.com
Website states its available in:
MP3
FLAC lossless
Apple lossless
High Resolution 24 bit 48k wav

Upon pre-ordering you get the first single: Came Back Haunted.
I downloaded the FLAC and wav and both are 24bit.

As always you get to download the album/tracks in multiple formats.
ie. you can download the music 4 times in 4 different formats for no extra cost.

Trent Reznor IS old (now), as are the Peppers and every other artist listed in this thread.  David Bowie is very old.  :)

Music for "people that aren't old" is called "Dubstep".

Ouch, well I'm 8 years older than Trent Reznor, so I guess I'm ancient  :'(  At least they don't give me a wheelchair at the Pichfork festival every year ... euh yet. How old is Dave Grohl, btw?

I have every artist you've posted in my collection (oops no Snow Patrol) -- even though I consider Steven Wilson/Porcupine neo-prog which to me is old (-hat)  :P

The "not old" thing is mostly a joke.
Maybe "24 bit Audio From Grunge/Alternative/Heavy Metal/90's Genres Generally Speaking" would have been more appropriate.
Yeah I took it that way :) .... Imagine having to listen to Barbra Streisand or Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass all day long when you turn 50!

Universal has released two waves of “High Fidelity Pure Audio” Bluray-Audio albums.
The majority of the albums predate the 90s. Three that pertain to this thread are the following:

Nirvana – In Utero
DTS-HD MA (96kHz 24bit 2ch) and PCM (96kHz 24bit 2ch) and TrueHD (96kHz 24bit 2ch)

Nirvana – Nevermind
DTS-HD MA (96kHz 24bit 2ch) and PCM (96kHz 24bit 2ch) and TrueHD (96kHz 24bit 2ch)

Beck – Sea Change
DTS-HD MA (192kHz 24bit 2ch) and PCM (192kHz 24bit 2ch) and TrueHD (192kHz 24bit 2ch) and
DTS-HD MA (192kHz 24bit 6ch) and PCM (192kHz 24bit 6ch) and TrueHD (192kHz 24bit 6ch)

I can confirm the audio specs are correct for In Utero but will have to wait to confirm
the other two until they arrive in the mail.

I noted Beck’s Sea Change in my first post as a “Difficult to find” DVD-Audio, so
it’s great that it’s readily available again, and it’s even at a higher sample rate
than previously. Not so great for the people trying to sell used copies for between 75 and 200 dollars.

The Nirvana albums aren’t all that exiting. Firstly because there isn’t a 5.1 mix.
Secondly because Kurt’s voice so raspy/crackly that I laugh continually while listening to Nirvana.
Thirdly because the albums are available at HD Tracks at the same quality, but in “Deluxe”, and
“Super Deluxe” editions. I’m not sure how the price compares because HD Tracks won’t tell me the prices anymore.
I’m in Canada and we typically aren’t allowed to buy digital downloads. I bought the blurays all for less than 20 dollars each so they’re likely similarly priced.

Hopefully this format does a little better than SACD and DVD-Audio.
New music would be nice though, instead of just putting existing Hi-Res albums on a different type of disc.

I have a stack of DVD-A and BD discs that I'm sorting through at the moment so I'll post more titles soon.

This is an awesome topic! I've actually got a good deal of the releases you've shown, in addition to others including 24/96 vinyl needledrops. :D That new Sea Change release, does it include Ship In A Bottle?

No. Just the original 12 North American tracks.

Just yesterday I received a new cartridge for my turntable so I can start listening to, and recording, my vinyl.
My interest is in mostly in vinyl exclusives so it's a rare occasion when I buy one.

Hello syndromeofadown,
Your topic caught me.
It sounds really interesting to catch on such good "selective" knowledge, makes e want to try on my Hi-Fi (2 channels).
Anyway is it possible to get a formated list  (.xls, etc.) and why not including  labels ? (no, no need for barcodes    ;D)
Thks
TC

p.s Scrap my request but do keep the compliments;  I found a Thomas Dolby in my Cd collection. Back in action then.

For DVD-V (DVD Video) or DVD-A (DVD-Audio) you can use DVD Audio Extractor or Foobar2000 to rip the audio content to high res.  DVD-V can handle 24/96 2-channel LPCM.  There are a few DVD-V discs out that have 24/96 2-channel uncompressed audio tracks.  I've used both DVD Audio Extractor and Foobar to rip a couple DVD-V discs that have 24/96 audio.

I don't have any DVD-A discs.  No experience ripping those.  But both DVD Audio Extractor and Foobar can.  Some DVD-A discs can have watermarking in the audio to thwart playback after ripping.  If a DVD-A has watermarking you'll need to deal with that issue.

I don't know how to get the high res audio tracks off a DVD-V or DVD-A using just MC.  It may be possible using MC, I just don't know.

Most of my 24-bit music would be classified as "music for people that are old".  However, I do have some that younger listeners might consider current.

24/96 ripped from DVD-V
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused To Sing

digital download
My Bloody Valentine - mbv [download is 24/96 WAV, had to tag and convert to FLAC]
Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks [24/48 in both the "audiophile" and standard masterings]

Qobuz download
Moby - Innocents [24/96]

HDtracks download
Green Day - American Idiot [24/96]

And that's about it for my youthful audiophile high res.  The rest of my high res pegs me as an old dude.

The Green Day from HDtracks is nice because it is much less compressed than the CD.  Finally get to hear it the way it should have been released on CD.

I also have the deluxe CD version of Moby - Innocents.  The high res version on Qobuz sounds better than the CD even though some of the DR numbers for the high res are actually lower.  I'm pretty sure the high res version is a different mastering.  Has noticeably more reverb and the sound has more space and depth.  The CD sounds flat in comparison.  If you like the music the high res version is well worth it if you listen as an audiophile.  Even though it's a bit difficult to buy from Qobuz if you're in the US.

Also great range of content from BD, both traditional Music BD, and "Pure Audio" BD (audio only).  You can then rip them in MC and tag them up + convert your preferred tracks to Audio only files, more here

New Blu-ray Audio

Soundgarden - Superunknown (20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition)
PCM (96kHz 24bit 2ch)
DTS-HD MA (96kHz 24bit 6ch)
TrueHD (96kHz 24bit 6ch)

I'm very impressed by this release. It sounds amazing and has great visuals. Not so great price though.

Not so new Blu-Ray video

Kasabian - Live At The 02
PCM (48kHz 24bit 2ch)
DTS-HD MA (48kHz 24bit 6ch)

Thanks Frobozz for adding to the list.

A couple not so recent releases:

La Roux - Trouble In Paradise
(96kHz 24bit 2ch) from HDtracks

Trent Reznor And Atticus Ross - Gone Girl OST
(48kHz 24bit 2ch) from NIN website

2014 was probably the worst year of my life for new music because there wasn't any.
I bought more re-releases then new material. It's similar to movies these days.
I suspect both movies and music will hit rock bottom this year before picking up again in 2016.

Since I wasn't busy listening to new music I had time to rip some HDCD's.
Here are some I found in my collection:

Filter - The Best Things/Take A Picture Single
Nine Inch Nails - The Day the World Went Away
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (Disc 2)
Nine Inch Nails - We're In This Together Part 2
Nine Inch Nails - We're In This Together Part 3
Pearl Jam - Live On Two Legs
Serj Tankian - Elect The Dead Symphony
Serj Tankian - Imperfect Harmonies (Disc 2)
Tool - Lateralus

The sites I looked at (Pono Music, Qobuz) only have it for purchase in 16-bit 44.1 kHz.

Steven Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase
(96kHz 24bit 2ch)
HDTracks
also available on blu-ray with (96/24 5.1 LPCM & DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1)

One of the best albums of the year, hands down.

I haven't heard it yet. I pre-ordered the cd/dvd from amazon in February but they never got any in stock to ship.
I recently cancelled it and ordered the Blu-ray. It arrived yesterday and should be in my library this evening.

I don't think it's available for purchase digitally at 24bit and I don't think it has been released on dvd-audio.
You can order the SACD from amazon (US, Canada, and Japan), or discogs.com for around 50 dollars.
It was recently re-released in Japan, hence the kinda low price.
I have no idea what you are supposed to do with the SACD when you get it though.
It seams to get re-released quite often so you will probably find a 24 bit version sometime soon.

New Blu-ray

Steven Wilson - 4.5
DTS-HD MA (96kHz 24bit 6ch)
PCM (96kHz 24bit 6ch)
PCM (96kHz 24bit 2ch)

New from HD Tracks

Filter - Crazy Eyes
(96kHz 24bit 2ch)

Deftones - Gore
(96kHz 24bit 2ch)

The new Filter album is alright. The best since Amalgamut.

Most, if not all, the back catalogs for Deftones and Red Hot Chilli Peppers are now available from HD Tracks.
I don't care enough about re-releases to list them here but thought it was worth noting.
(I also need a VPN to look at the album info because I'm not in the US and it is forbidden for me to buy music)

The real Deftones treat (AFAIK, the 24/96 Gore is a padded rip off that peaks at 22kHz that's identical to the CD - glad I didn't waste money buying it myself!) is the remastered albums collection with slightly different versions of songs, especially White Pony.

Thanks for the heads up. There are weird/annoying thing going on with a lot of "Hi-Res" music.
I also noticed that Deftones Koi No Yokan which I bought at 24-96 is only 24-44.1 in the The Studio Album Collection (That has no bonus tracks).
Nothing like jumping through hoops to buy music I already own at premium price just to get a not so premium product.

I thought I noticed that too. I believe "passenger" has Chino singing at the end where he wasn't previously.

Muse also has their back catalog at HD Tracks now. They have some pretty bad sounding albums so I hope they have been improved.

Yeah, I don't buy Hi-Res anymore unless it's confirmed by others that the release isn't a blatant rip off as sadly a lot of Hi-Res releases these days are rip offs. Pretty sure I heard the Steven Wilson Hi-Res releases were same as the CDs too, not sure, I'll have to look at the spectrals here in a bit.

There's a different 24/96 master of Koi No Yokan which is less compressed than the master used for the CD, which sounds great. :D

Pink Maggit also has an additional part added near the end, and there's other changes in songs on Adrenaline and Around The Fur too.

The new radiohead is great musically, but pretty squashed DR
I went with the 24 for the extra £0.5 but there is no evidence out that the 16/24 are any different, just bounced down

The new Metallica remasters (KeA and RtL) are available in HD, the mixes are actually really good especially KeA which may be the best sounding version yet IMO.  Again there is no evidence that the 16/24 are any different (other than USD$8).

Sadly, this. The 24/48 WAV is better than the 16-bit though.

I'm waiting for a proper vinyl rip of the album.

I scanned this whole thread but didn't see any of my hi rez tracks listed.

I have all 9 of the studio Led Zep albums in 24/96

And I have Several Pink Floyd and related in 24/96 inc DSoTM, WYWH, The Division Bell, The Endless River, Rattle That Lock, and Amused to Death.

but then... I guess I'm old... I don't feel real old but I guess it happens to us all if we are lucky.

Before the Flood - Music from the Motion Picture
(48kHz 24bit 2ch)

Featuring:
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
Gustavo Santaolalla
Mogwai

Available in wav from nin website with purchase of vinyl.
As far I can tell there is no option to just buy the digital version without the vinyl.

A bunch of NIN stuff released/re-released at NIN website.
The following downloads are available with purchase of Vinyl.
As for as I can tell there isn't a digital only option.

New EP
Nine Inch Nails - Not The Actual Events
(48kHz 24bit 2ch)

New Remix Album
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile Deviations 1
(96kHz 24bit 2ch)

Re-releases
Nine Inch Nails - Broken (Definitive Edition)
(96kHz 24bit 2ch)

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (Definitive Edition)
(96kHz 24bit 2ch)

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (Definitive Edition)
(96kHz 24bit 2ch)

As noted in an earlier post The Downward Spiral was previously re-issued on DVDAudio and SACD that included 6 channel mixes.

The Fragile Deviations 1 is limited and definitely worth picking up if you are a fan of the original album. The original is, considered by me, the best album ever released.

There's more vinyl/HD downloads on the site I won't get too into.
Ghosts I-IV - Previously available on Blu-ray.
Hesitation Marks - Previously available to download without vinyl.
Natural Born Killers OST.
Lost Highway OST - Lots of Bowie on it.
The Social Network OST - Previously available on Blu-Ray with 6ch mix.
Gone Girl OST - Previously available to download without vinyl.

I have mixed feeling about it. I couldn't care less about vinyl, especially when i have hi res digital of the same album.
But when the vinyl with HD download is comparatively priced to digital only from somewhere like HD Tracks it's not so bad. The local vinyl store sells albums for 50 - 80 dollars, so again it's not that bad. It's like getting a poster in the mail. My main issue with forcing vinyl is the shipping. I had to pay 83USD, which is like a million Canadian dollars, and it had to go to a town 2 hours from my house. Why not ship USPS for like 10 dollars, to my actual address, and let it take an extra couple days? Instead if forcing vinyl I would prefer a fuzzy little box with a nice artwork book inside, with CD, DVD, and BD discs that possibly include a 6 channel mix. Make the vinyl an optional extra.
