UPnP Server 1.0.9 for Media Receivers
« on: January 29, 2005, 11:30:44 am »

MC's UPnP Server is available here:
http://www.jriver.com/~gateley/server_upnp_1.0.9.mjp
This is for Media Center 11 only.

Changes and fixes
1. Roku Soundbridge now works. (others may too)
2. Renamed Options (temporary, will change more in future).
3. Fixed file extension/mime types for files when converting to MP3.

--------------------------------------------------------

Instructions for using the UPnP Server
Click on Plug-ins in MC's tree, then on UPnP Server.  On the right side of the UPnP Server page, set "Options" and then click on "Start" to start the server.

If a media receiver is already on the network, and the server is started, the receiver should pick up the server right away. When a media receiver is first turned on, if the server is already started, the receiver should pick up the server. Some receivers may not do both correctly, so try both.

If you cannot see your view scheme, make sure that:
1) The View Scheme is selected to Show in Theater View (under Edit View Scheme).
2) The View Scheme is a child of "Audio", "Images" or "Video".

Options
You can convert files to MP3 as they are streamed.  See Options on the UPnP page.

If you have multiple network interfaces on your computer, such as an ethernet and a bluetooth interface, you may need to specify the IP address the UPnP server uses (it will only listen on a single interface, and may choose the one the device is not on).

Unless you are reporting log information here, you can turn off many warings by unchecking "Warn on unrecognized NOTIFY".

Checkboxes are available for three special cases:

1.  "Replace Empty Genre" is required for the NETGEAR MP101, and possibly others. It replaces blank genres with "Unknown". The MP101 will otherwise refuse to play tracks with blank genres.

2.  "Use Flat URLs" is required for the SMC EZ Stream and the Terratec Noxon. These receivers cannot handle complex URLs (internal to the protocol) and this hack changes the URLs to simpler ones.

3. "Include SessionID" must be turned off for Roku. It may be required for others. If you know of a device that requires it, please let me know.

A log is generated on the UPnP Server page in MC.  If you have a UPnP device that doesn't work, you can copy the log from MC's UPnP Server (under the tree/plug-ins) and paste it into a thread here. Make sure the "Warn on unrecognized NOTIFY" option is selected before creating the log.

I wrote to Motorola to find out if the SimpleFi and its support for UPnP and if it were possible for a product that does as well to support it. Unfortunately, I didn't get the response I was hoping for:

Thank you for your interest in the SimpleFi product. The UPnP was going to be enabled in version 2.0 of the software. Unfortunately this software has never been released and the product line has been discontinued. Therefore you will not be able to use the SimpleFi product with other UPnP network devices.

So it looks like I'll have to make due with the software they shipped with. :(

Does that apply to the Simple Ware Media Center, the Drivers, or the firmware in the box itself.

Don't you just love it when the likes of Motorola brings out a product like the SimpleFI and refers to Future enhancements, and then drops the ball cold.

It sure would be nice to be able to set up playlist in something other than the software that came with the box.

As it seems the new version fixes the "timing" problems with the Terratec Noxon. I can now browse all smartlists and playlists without problems.

BTW, is it possible to detect the capabilities of a device via UPnP? Then it would be nice if MC could remove the unnecessary menu options "Images" and "Video" for audio-only devices like the Noxon automatically.

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but got a quick Q -  can I now connect two MCs together using UPnP?

I already use Media Server in MC 10.0.173, but that doesn't support on-the-fly conversion to MP3.  I would love to be able to  us MC as a client to connect  to a UPnP MC Server, such that I can stream my APE files as MP3 (e.g. for listening over the internet)

Is that possible in 11?

Thanks

I'm new to this media server thing; just got my Roku M500.  Does this MediaCenter UPnP feature only work in version 11?  I am using 10.0.155 and I'm having various problems.

The root of all my problems is probably the fact that I get an error (Windows XP, "We're sorry...", "Send", or "Don't Send") when trying to install the UPnP plug-in from the link in the initial message of this thread.

Hoping that it might have installed OK anyway, I look in MediaCenter's "tree" (I assume this is the left pane of the screen, where you find "Playing Now" and "Media Library" folders with plus signs for expansion, etc.), per the instructions in the message, but I don't even see a "Plug-Ins" entry there, never mind a UPnP entry.

What am I doing wrong?  Thanks for your help.

Use Library Server, not UPnP Server.

Thanks, John.  I upgraded to v11.0.183, and UPnP server 1.0.9.

I'm still having problems with the Roku M500, however.  Do you have any further insight?

It continues to say that there are no music libraries to be found.  Here is the log from the UPnP server pane:

(I am able to play internet radio stations on the Roku, so that tells me that my internet connection is good, etc.)

Thanks again.

Hi yowzah,

Did you get the latest version of the plugin (the URL is in the first post of this thread)? If not, it won't work. The software is changing really quickly on our end.

Hi yowzah,

You can choose the option "don't show NOTIFY warnings", they don't help in this case.

You may have to play with startup order.

I'm pretty sure the order I used is:

1) pull the plug on the Roku
2) start the server (restart if needed)
3) Put the plug in on the Roku
4) It should then find the server

You must pull the plug, just hitting the power off button doesn't help.

Try other orders - starting the Roku first, etc.

UPnP is supposed to work so that devices discover control points as they are added, and control points discover devices as they are added, so any time you add something, it should just work. However, very few devices or pieces of software live up to this standard as of yet...

A new build is here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=25823.msg179134#msg179134

It adds support for the D-Link DSM320.
