Even if you uninstall JRiver, it seems that all the files are not deleted and a re-installation preserve the settings...

Add me to the list of those having trouble with MC not launching and needing to be uninstalled and reinstalled.

Hello all,
First post here for me! I have been watching quietly from the wings, soaking up the knowledge of the forum members. I recently bought a QNAP HS251+ and have loaded it with two WD red 6TB drives in raid1 configuration. The drive is loaded with around 1.5 TB of high res music files in various formats. I have the NAS on my hi-fi rack connected to my Devialet 400 by USB and connected to my TV via HDMI. I use an iPad to control the NAS thus: to bring the NAS out of sleep mode I use the WOL feature of Qmanager. When I get the beep to say it's ready I then switch to Qremote and clicking on the four squares top left brings up the app menu from which I select Media Center 21. I then open the JRemote app and I'm good to go, well, 90% of the time, that is!  Sometimes the app will refuse to load which means that I have to turn the TV on and start the app using Qremote to navigate. If this fails I have to uninstall JRiver using HD Station on my Mac, then reinstall, which is only a two minute job, but a royal pain in the ar*e.

Am I doing everything right? Is there anything I can do to connect the app to the NAS successfully every time or do I have to wait for the next JRiver fix?
TIA to you all!

Testing an update for this right now. If it's good will get it off to QNAP right away.

Thanks Bob! Please let me know how you get on. Also, I have found that if I put the NAS into sleep mode rather than turn it off, I don't have any problems.

I run the HDMI output of the Qnap (451+, 8 gig RAM) into an Emotiva UMC-200.  I am getting frequent dropouts for buffering when playing multichannel music files.  It happens most severely with multichannel SACD ISO's where MC extracts a 1 bit, 352.8 kHz stream from the ISO but then has to convert it to 1 bit 192 kHz for use in my Pre Pro.  Performance is similar if I convert to DSF as well. The dropouts happen less with 24/96 5.1 flacs, although a couple of dropouts per track is still unacceptable.  It happens very rarely, if at all with stereo playback of any bitrate.  When these dropouts happen the server display flashes to say its buffering. I increased pre buffering to the max, enabled read from memory,  maxed out live playback latency and limited output to 192kHz.  Some or all of these changes helped some, but the dropouts are still fairly significant.  Any suggestions on how can I eliminate this problem completely?

I'm becoming more and more convinced that these single box server/NAS QNAP units do not have the processor horsepower to process High Resolution multichannel audio files.  If you are thinking of using this for anything more demanding than 24/48 multichannel flac,  I think you're going to be disappointed.

Upon further review: I have found that the real problem may be this particular implementation of MC. Kodi, which is also bundled with the QNAP servers, does not exhibit these problems. No buffering problems with 24/96 multichannel flac.  No problems with multichannel DSF playback (Kodi does not support SACD ISO).  While doing some resource monitoring while MC is playing, I get huge 90%+ usages on all four processor cores while playing back multichannel SACD ISO.

All sounds rather odd. Thanks for passing on what you know. It's a bit of drag when the communication that you're getting is a cone of silence.

Standing by for the next instalment..

Really annoying for all of those who paid for the license and are expriencing these major problems now. But I understand that this is due to the slow response of QNAP which hopefully finally approve the fix so that I can continue using JRiver the way it's intended to be  :-\

Worthless!
If this reaction is typical for QNAP, this has been my last QNAP-NAS!

Dear Oerlemans,

Thank you for your email.

JRiver Mediacenter is a paid app after a 30 day trial you have to purchase it.
Did you purchase a license?

Unfortunately we can not deliver support on this Issue if it doesn't work any more.

Ok - keeping fingers crossed. This is really a show-stopper for me on my QNAP. Especially since I changed my setup to rely on this (qnap/jriver -> amplifier etc.) I am depending on it.
So glad QNAP finally provided some helpfull feedback and you guys are able to fix it. Please just keep us updated when you provide the fix to QNAP so we can follow how long they take for getting in approved / available in the QNAP Appstore.

I've pretty much given up on MC for use with my QNAP 451+.  Beyond the re-install issue,  it couldn't stream 24/96 Flac and much less process SACD ISO without unacceptable dropouts, not to mention the lack of a controllable 10 foot interface.

The drive is loaded with around 1.5 TB of high res music files in various formats. I have the NAS on my hi-fi rack connected to my Devialet 400 by USB

Hello to all of you!
I'm new on this forum, i own a Synology and i use-it to play music through USB interface to an Accuphase DAC 40, exactly like Alex F
Now, i would like to upgrade to an QNAP HS 251+ because it is much quiet and because i understood that JRiver is bit perfect.
I will not use HDMI in any way, the only purpose of the NAS will be (beside the storage) to play music via USB.
I want to ask you few questions:

a) how do i know if my DAC will be recognized by QNAP ?
b) it's there a chance that JRiver could be supported by synology in the future?
c) can i use a USB/SPDIF convertor with JRiver/QNAP (like the one here: http://audiophilleo.com/Audiophilleo2 )
d) how easy will be to install JRiver on HS 251+ ?

Thank you in advance for the answers !!!

Welcome to the fun.

Quickly and to the best of my knowledge ...

a) what's your DAC? Hard to guess on compatibility without detail.
b) one for the devs but anything is possible. Just a question of value and time.
c) I wouldn't know. The Qnap forum might offer answers if you draw a blank here.
d) I didn't find out too hard for a TS653. The key aspect is to remember to do the install with a monitor and keyboard connected. The guide on the qnap website does a pretty good job.

Yeah, sure but I think the smart move is install MC with keyboard and monitor. Check the QNAP website and app store for more details.

Is there any way to control MC21 through a web interface?
The HD Station interface is useless unless you sit in front of a TV with a wireless mouse and keyboard.
There must be a way to access MC21 through <NAS_IP>:port#      ?

Anyone?

Welcome to the forum.

Please take a look at the Remotes page on our wiki.

Remote Desktop would work if the QNAP supports it.

Try http://[IPaddress]:52199

Sensible suggestion.

I had to upgrade QNAP firmware, so I'm wondering whether there was some issue on the NAS side of things?

The biggest changes are to being the release up to the current linux release and to fix the glitch that removed MC's library files on reboot of the QNAP.

I wouldn't expect that last bit is standard JRiver coding. No matter. MC is back.

Is there any chance this new update may have fixed the other issues I was having? Specifically being unable to play multichannel flac or multichannel SACD ISO/DFS files without bringing the QNAP processor to its knees and causing unacceptable dropouts due to buffering?

I don't know, but it is probably the processor itself that is the weak link.

Could someone run a benchmark and paste the result here?  It's under MC's Help menu.

It will depend on the unit each person has but for what it's worth, here's a run for a TS-653 Pro:

Maths Benchmark: 798
Image Benchmark: 1434
Database Benchmark: 1043

JRMark (21.0.54): 1092

The new version of MC (21.0.54) has ironed out a couple of problems that I was having.
1. MC works properly after a NAS shutdown and restart (after quite a long wait for the OS to stabilise)
2. Gapless playback works properly. :D

Happy happy joy joy!

Thanks to all concerned!

Alex.

It will depend on the unit each person has but for what it's worth, here's a run for a TS-653 Pro:

Maths Benchmark: 798
Image Benchmark: 1434
Database Benchmark: 1043

JRMark (21.0.54): 1092

Not being familiar with this kind of thing, can someone explain to me what it means?  Also, now that my 30 day trial has expired waiting for these issues to be ironed out, is there any way to get another trial period to evaluate if MC is usable on my TS-451+now?

Could someone please help:

I used JRiver on a QNAP within the test period, then I upgraded to a master license on my PC. I have the code and the key file, but I don't know how to license the QNAP JRiver Version, as I can't use "Recover" and there's no other way to key in the license key.

Any clue?

Can you get to the Help menu?

I believe there is a way to use the command line to do it.

If you see the restore option, you should be able to enter your Registration Code there.

To use a license from the command line, open a Terminal and put in the following;

Code: [Select]
mediacenter21 /RestoreFromFile <path to .mjr file>
For the path part, just drag and drop the .mjr license file into the Terminal... assuming the QNAP OS has a file explorer-type of feature. If it doesn't you'll have to type the path in.

I don't know, but it is probably the processor itself that is the weak link.

Could someone run a benchmark and paste the result here?  It's under MC's Help menu.

Benchmark for TVS-871T is
Math 2256

I am considering moving from my QNAP HS 210 to the HS 251+ because the HS 210 does not support HD Station and thus I cannot install JRiver on the QNAP. A question is whether the QNAP HS 251+ together with JRiver support USB DAC's directly from the QNAP. Does one need drivers for a USB DAC when using JRiver with the QNAP. Are there fundamental differences between the QNAP HS 251 + JRiver on the QNAP and a QNAP plus a dedicated NUC running JRiver

Take a look at the recommended compatible hardware list:
https://www.qnap.com/i/useng/product_x_grade/product_intro.php?g_cat=15&II=197&hf=0
Brand       Model       Remark
Sony              PHA-2      USB DAC
M2TECH      hiFace Two           USB DAC
Fostex      HP-A4      USB DAC
Logitech           A-5572A      USB Sound Card

Looks like a limited range.

I can't provide better advice than that. I'd expect anything other than the OEM recommendation will be a matter for trial and error.
