separate users
« on: May 17, 2016, 03:52:24 pm »

First off - thanks for such great SQ, I'm really enjoying it.
I have MC21 running on a Win7 PC in the basement.  I also watch in bed (upstairs laptop) via MC21 Library Server to the basement PC
My wife has seen my setup and wants the same on her laptop.
My Q is - can I set up a separate user view - so that she will only see certain shows that I label that she's interested and not all of my scifi, sports, etc.?
thx

if you don't care that your wife could access your stuff (not like hiding stuff from kids or whatever) the easiest route is to use a field (like keywords, or a custom field) and enter your name, or your wifes name, then create a view that only sees those files

it's a few minutes to set up, and then if you/her ever did want to see the other stuff it's a matter of clicking on the other view

Explore the View > User menu.

thanks that works.
Though the user has the ability to change what user thye are - is there a way to lock the user so they can't change - e.g. for kids, and only see what I select for them?

the users can be password protected
However user management is not. Anyone can create a new user or edit the file types that they have access to without needing the admin password.

what is your end goal?  do you want a password protected "hidden" section for the kids?

is it just your wife?

the user system isn't like windows UAC, but there may be workarounds depending on what you want to have at the end...

A password protected  section for the kids, so they'll only have access to the videos that I allow.

ya that one isn't immediately possible.  the user system is complex enough that it's some sort of barrier but it's not currently designed to do that.  any workarounds are hardware based (separate libraries) although one could run another copy of MC concurrently and one version would use a different library

There's a very nice Wiki article about the Users feature. I wrote it myself:
