Stability Issues on windows 10
« on: May 25, 2016, 03:01:23 pm »

Recently my JRiver has been getting closed by windows and i have a few questions.  It is a recent development and worked OK up until recently

I have a somewhat "lower end" computer running it  1.5 G Celeron processor and 4 gig of ram

I think the ram might be a little low for Windows 10, would increasing it be of value?

Will version 21 play better with Windows 10?

The computer is a dedicated media server so it has no other "load" on it other than JRiver.

I also just noticed that the Network was set to "public" and i just changed to "private" which may have something to do with it.

What are you using MC for (audio only, audio & video)? I think 4GB mem on Win10 x32 is fine.

what are you using now? MC19"? MC20? I would say Yes, upgrade. You can get the MC21 and MC22 license now at a discount. The newer versions usually have "bug fixes" and improvements, so installing the newest version is always a good idea.

I don't see how having your network open to public would cause stability problems. Are you running multiple computers with MC on them (i.e. Server - Client config)?
When you have a problem with MC you can try to get a Log for JRiver to look at. It's at Help>Logging. You need to be sure to turn On logging.
Also run the JRiver benchmark (also at Help>Benchmark). If you have a score under 1500, it's somewhat weak. My old Dell Laptop has a score of 1828.  Report back your score.

Yeah, that machine's kinda weak, IMO. I don't think just upgrading the RAM would be enough either.

RAM also wouldn't account for the problem.

Are you running antivirus software on the machine?  That can cause this kind of problem.

Video drivers are also a common source.

When it closes, what is the message?  What happens if you just wait?

I think Windows Defender might be running.

I am also using a multi channel audio interface (Behringer FCA610) and using WASAPI settings.  I think drivers are all current and latest versions.  This had been working OK and recently started having "hiccups".  Other symptom i have heard is kind of a "scupping" kind of sound in the background. JRiver will play for an hour or two and windows shuts it down (that is what the dialog box says).
Whatever I can do to reduce CPU load in the way of disabling services not required for JRiver might help.  I think it is "close enough" that a few "tweaks" might make it behave.

You might try this:
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Taming_Windows_Defender

CPU should normally be less than 10% unless you're playing something like DSD.

You might also try powering your whole network and all the machines on it down and back up.

OK, I uninstalled and reinstalled MC21 and it seems to be better now.  I have had 5 music streams playing overnight with no hang-up. Not sure if I need to consider a faster processor (unfortunately that would mean a new computer).  I guess I will see how it goes.
